The original Card-Toon trick is cheaply available online and very well known. It works no matter what card your audience chooses, but the deck cannot be examined afterwards or the trick will be revealed. You can search YouTube for it if you're curious how it's done, there are several videos revealing the secret.

Dan's variation on the original trick that he performed tonight allowed the deck to be examined by Penn afterwards, which is why he was surprised. It wasn't done the way they expected. Not sure how he performed it tonight, but my guess is it involved a deck switch (that P&T weren't looking for because they thought they knew it).
