A few films I would check out:

• Terror of MechaGodzilla is one of the best Showa films. It has an amazing soundtrack, and has an interesting story and a cool 1v2 battle with Godzilla, MechaGodzilla, and the newcomer, Titanosaurus, who has an amazing roar.
  
  
• Godzilla vs Biollante is one of my favorite as well. Biollante may look like an abomination, but they make the creature seem "beautiful" in a sense, maybe precious is the better word. The story is very good, and the Biollante "suit" is really convincing even to this day. The human characters are interesting as well.
  
  
• Godzilla vs Destoroyah is...really, really good. I wouldn't watch this one first, leave this one as one of the last ones you want to see. Very emotional story, very dark, and not really uplifting in the slightest.
  
  
• GMK All Monsters All-Out Attack: Fantastic film. Godzilla is the villian this time around, while King Ghidorah, typically a villian, is considered a good kaiju. Good effects, a scary Godzilla, and a well paced story.
  
  
• Godzilla 2014: A good film to start off with. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but it's a good start regardless.

• Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla: This film has horrible pacing issues and a story that isn't interesting. While I found SpaceGodzilla interesting in the games, he isn't interesting at all in the film.
  
  
• Godzilla vs the Sea Monster: This movie is just...meh. I sometimes forget it exists.
  
  
• Godzilla vs Megaguirus: Another meh film. Megaguirus is a cool kaiju, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
  
  Films that you should watch with friends for some laughs:
  
  
• Godzilla All Monsters Attack: This film is all over the place. It really feels like a film that had a production team with a motto of "Hey, why not? It's not like we're trying"! It's hilarious on how weird it is.
  
  
• Godzilla 1998: Yeah, this film is basically nothing but the usual 90s cliches we've seen before, now with more Godzilla, sorry, Zilla. Most of the Simpsons cast is in it though, so that's a plus...right?
  
  
• Godzilla Final Wars: I don't think I should say much for this one. The craziest Godzilla film you will ever watch.
  
  
• King Kong vs Godzilla is great for the sole fact it's King Kong vs Godzilla, East vs West. It's not the best in terms of story, but it's cool to see both of them on screen together for the first...and not last...time.

  EDIT 2: Heck, watch all the Godzilla films with your friends, each one has something special to enjoy.

First: your best starting bet would be to pick up this Showa Series Godzilla Collection as it is the best in terms of actual movies you can't get anywhere else.

Second: I'd move on to get THIS 'G' SET (used if possible to cut down the price). The reason behind getting this particular set is that it includes both "Son of Godzilla" and "G VS. MechaGodzilla" these 2 movies are extremely rare and expensive by themselves and will end up costing you more in the long run.

Third: The Heisei Series is out there and available as dual sided discs. However, "G'85" and "G vs. Biollante" have never been released in the US (assuming you are from here?). I just ordered the entire Heisei Series from Japan and converted the DVDs to Region 1. They all play great just so long as you don't mind subtitles.

Forth: All of Millennium Series is extremely easy to find and they're all pretty cheap. What you'll have the hardest time finishing is all the Showa stuff... "VS. Hedorah", "VS. Sea Monster", "VS. Gigan" are very rare and expensive... I'd hold off as long as you can with these and just check Amazon or Ebay frequently to find a good deal (which you probably won't). Personally I got down to these last few and just bit the bullet. I think I probably paid close to or around $30 for each just to complete my collection. Also, "VS. Megalon" is being released for the 1st time on DVD/BD in a couple of weeks! don't forget to pick that baby up! it's the last one I need to finish out my entire collection!

That said... with the hype surrounding Legendary's new 2014 60th anniversary remake, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you saw a sudden resurgence in Godzilla rereleases. I'm willing to bet that if you're patient enough you MIGHT be able to get some of these harder to find titles that way.

As for your your original question about there being one big boxset? yes, it's a Japan exclusive and is about $1000 US dollars. HOPE THAT HELPS!

Amazon all the way. With the exception of 2014. I got that on Black Friday at Best Buy for $4. Godzilla 1998 and 2014 are always cheap. Even without the Black Friday deal, it's still cheap on Amazon.

Then there's Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. These two are extremely hard to come by, but the way I see it, here are your options:

1. Pay for the official Japanes blu-rays (expensive)
   
2. Pay for the official American distributed DVD's (expensive)
   
3. Bootlegs, which is what I went with. Either get it from sumogorilla.com or showavideo.com. I went with sumogorilla, but what you should know is that only DVD's are sold here and they are all in Japanese dub with English subtitles. But from what I hear, showavideo has blu-rays with better quality, however, they cost a little bit more and in order to even view the website, you need to be a member. Sign-up is free, but you can only do so on the last day of a month and the first day of a month. Both websites are reliable.
   
   Last but not least is King Kong vs. Godzilla. Now you can get the official blu-ray on Amazon for a cheap price, but mind you, this doesn't have the Japanese dub, only the English dub. It is for this reason that I purchased it from sumogorilla, seeing as I only intend to watch them in Japanese.
   
   Well, there you have it. Hopefully this will help you on your journey in collecting every Godzilla movie out there. But I'm sure there are other methods of doing so as well, so keep an eye out for any tips and information! As time passes, the prices and sources will as well. But this is how I collected the films.

Do you have a price range? Figures are nice because they are cool to place in your room and it is more fun to receive than a movie, poster, shirt, etc. The NECA brand figure for the new movie is pretty sweet. If you search NECA Pacific Rim, they have some awesome figures from that movie, too. Most Godzilla fans like Pacific Rim. The chibi sets are awesome as well. I have them in front of my computer. This graphic novel is really amazing, and I would even recommend it to non-Godzilla fans.

I think this and this are a great way to get your collection started. If you are looking to do Blu-Ray these double feature bundles are good too. Then just hunt down the rest. This one has a lot of the earlier ones. I've purchased individually because the sets weren't always around, I'm thinking of upgrading to blu-ray but i still love running across the ones I'm missing in places like thrift shops. Anyways. It may look common but hear me out. This model is of a suit that was only ever on screen in a film for about 5 seconds. This is from the 1995 film wherein the old Godzilla dies and his son becomes the new King of the Monsters. The film fades out as it zooms through a fog looking at the suit. The suit itself was never utilized in any following Godzilla film and marked the final shot of the Heisei era of films. This is the first time the suit itself has been presented to the public completely. In my mind, it's a great collector's item for a big fan, especially if the fan in question loves the 84-95 films the most.

I honestly don't know why that movie is so pricey. I found it here for $115 new and 72.61 used (O_O)

Best bet is to try stores like FYE that have hard to find DVDs. Best of luck to ya.

If you want the best picture quality, absolutely go for Blu-ray. If DVD is good enough for you, then by all means go for it -- it's generally cheaper anyway. Some films are available in multi-format combo packs; if you're fine with DVD for now but might switch to Blu later, then it might make sense to grab those.

The rights are definitely all over the place. Here's a handy breakdown of who owns what. Those Blu-ray double features (plus Godzilla 2000) cover the Toho-produced films from the '90s and '00s.

Criterion has released an excellent DVD and Blu-ray of the original Godzilla from 1954, which is an absolute must. Other than that, as far as we know, they currently own and are apparently working on discs of the rest of the Showa Godzilla series except for King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan. (They also own Rodan and War of the Gargantuas; no word on whether those specifically will be released on disc.) We don't yet have release dates or official announcements for any of these films, and I personally wouldn't expect to hear anything before February, which is when their May 2019 releases will be announced.

If you just want to see as many of the films as possible and worry about the best available release of a given film later, here's a shopping list:

• Classic Media's Godzilla Collection box set. A good chunk of the Showa series in Japanese with subs and dubbed. OOP, but can probably be found cheaper than all the individual releases.
  
• Both volumes of Sony's Toho Godzilla Collection. Covers the '90s-'00s Japanese films, plus Rebirth of Mothra I and II. Note that these are reissues of older discs, so some are dub-only and/or pan and scan.
  
• Godzilla Stomp Box, containing Godzilla vs. Megalon and Destroy All Monsters.
  
• King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan, The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Biollante (OOP), the 1998 and 2014 American films, and Shin Godzilla are all available in standalone releases.
  
• The anime films are on Netflix. No word on whether these will get physical releases.
  
  Of course, aside from physical media, there are always streaming options of varying legality as well as bootleg discs, but I doubt the mods would take too kindly to my posting specifics about those here.

First of all, due to the limited number of films released in the UK (Godzilla ’54, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla ’98 and Godzilla ’14), if you want to own all the films on physical media you will need a multi-region DVD player in order to watch them. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to buy a new DVD player, as there might be a way to make your current device read and play disc from any region. I recommend having a look at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks to see whether the make/model of your current player has a way to convert it to multi-region playback. Please note that these are based on user reports and have not all been tested or verified by the site, so discretion is advised. From personal experience, I have altered two (maybe three) of my own DVD players for multi-region playback and all are functioning fine.

Awesome! Almost identical to my collection, even with Sumogorillas! I have the American King Kong vs Godzilla, and I wish I had the 2014 version in Blu-Ray. I also haven't seen Gamera.

First of all, don't pirate anything. There are only a couple that you could really justify pirating, but there's no reason to start with those. If you're truly interested and want to support Godzilla, pay for the movies.

A good starting point is the DVD The Godzilla Collection. It contains the following movies:

It went OOP really quick and most of copies had an issue with the left channel audio on one of the surround sound options. So a rerelease this quick is actually pretty nice, even if it's just going to be basically the same release.

Starting with original and (at least attempting to) making your way through the series by release order is probably simplest way to go about it.

There's also a collection set that carries most of the Heisei era and all of the Millennium era films for around $50, which could be a good starting point.

There's also streaming options, though I personally don't know the pricing if you choose that route, I imagine it's cheaper and more convenient than trying to track down physical copies of certain films.

You could get him something like this Toho Godzilla Collection it comes with about 13 movies at a pretty decent price range. Or since he grew up watching them he probably watched some of the Showa movies so you could pre order the Showa Godzilla Criterion set that has every Godzilla film from 1954-1975. Or you could also buy Godzilla: King of the Monsters which comes out on the 27th this month.

They were never released on DVD with subtitles. Dub only. For original audio with subs, you'll have to get the Blu-ray versions.

I don't think Super Mechagodzilla will be super pricey for a while. I know it's not Heisei, but 2004 Gigan is usually 100 and that's amazing for an enemy.

The cheapest used copies on Amazon currently go for about $50.

But Criterion might be releasing it and a lot of other classic Godzilla movies on blu-ray in the next year or two. They have obtained the streaming rights to these movies and had them available to watch on the Filmstruck streaming service. Criterion has expressed interest in obtaining home media rights too but they haven't officially announced anything yet.

This is discussed pretty significantly in David Kalat's book. I was actually surprised to read this symbolism, Godzilla is definitely perceived as a deeper character in Japan that I thought he was. One of the items that really drove this point was Godzilla destroying the Diet building but then returning to the ocean when he looked at the Imperial Palace. Tangentially related: I thought it was an interesting observation that the Japanese critics like to point out how no assistance comes from the American's in any of the Japanese cuts of the movies.

The GvSG / GvD double pack is a unique pairing though. Both movies are available on Bluray but they are paired with other movies. Spacegodzilla is paired with Mechagodzilla II here, and Destroyah is paired with Megaguirus here.

Thank's everyone who responded when I initially asked this question! I was hoping there would be a big giant Blu-ray box set of all the classics, but of course such a thing doesn't exist, not does a Blu-ray set for all three classic eras in their entirety.

But here's what I did find, and it's far more affordable than I initially feared! "Affordable" is a subjective term of course, and I'm excluding the outlier that is Godzilla Vs. Biollante...
