Oh, that is much better. I'll see if I can find a seller somewhere.

>Yes you can copy from one USB to another. There are a few ways to do it, with different pros and cons.. I'd use dd, but there's probably a friendlier tool if that doesn't fit your tastes. :)

Good to know, I'll try that as well.

Thanks for your help!

I don't know if it counts as king, but the Acer aspire laptop they're selling on Amazon right now is a full fledged Windows laptop, could easily dual boot Ubuntu 19.10, and firmly sits in the Chromebook price range at $260. It also has a ryzen 3 3200u that benches out better than a Celeron 4100 (about the %30 faster on userbenchmark as long as you're ok with going with ryzen. BTW AMD apparently is know for running Linux better than a lot of Intel machines.

Edit: I also found this chromebook by Acer that has 8gb of ram, but a tiny 64gb internal memory and an M3-8100y processor that I can't find a benchmark for, but if you're looking for a Chromebook it looks promising.

Don't use USB2.0. It will work, but it will be very slow. USB3.0 or USB3.1 are good.

It completely froze and would not work after that. I tried a re-installation but the usb was toast.
I have had very good luck with the Sandisk Switch:
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-SecureAceess-Software-SDCZ52-064G-B35/dp/B00BX5B9YM/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&qid=1501463215&sr=8-30&keywords=usb+sandisk
It is not as small as a Fit but is fairly small form factor.

it works out of the box if you buy one with drivers in the mainline kernel. Just go on Amazon and search for 'USB ethernet linux'

edit: I'll make my post more useful and add that I've used the Amazon Basics USB 3.0/Ethernet adapter and works perfectly across all OSes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M77HMU0

thanks for the reply, but that seems to be a bit out of my price range. i can't see anything under 400

I've found this one which seems to be pretty close

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0172GUW4I/ref=psdc_565108_t2_B016J9LHSO

but I'm concerned that it won't be able to handle decoding 1080p video. (i understand it'll be downscaling to a lower resolution. I'm fine with that. Everything on my nas is 1080p where possible)

When is the next generation models coming out? Will they be supported by galliumos out of the gate or will it take a few months even once they have come out?

I very much second the USB drive, I use this one (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-Flash-MUF-128BB-AM/dp/B017DH3O5A) and is possibly the best thing for this computer.

The 32 gigs the 14 has is more forgiving than other chromebooks' 16 so you dont need to worry as much about slimming the install. Programs and such wont take up a whole lot of space so you shouldnt need to try to put them on the USB.

I don't know that you're going to have luck with changing the SSD.

I bought a Samsung 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive for $41 that's the size of my thumbnail to permanently leave in my Samsung Chromebook 3.

That's where I installed GalliumOS. I definitely notice the occasional hangs because of it, but I wanted to leave my ChromeOS disk alone.

For $197, I fucking love this machine.

I am using an AX88179-based 1Gbps ethernet-to-USB3 adapter. It is this one. Might not be the latest and greatest, but it "just works" wonderfully with no messing around. I haven't tried with the ChromeOS, but it works with vanialla Linux.

Sometimes I need it for my Raspberry Pi Zero and it works too.

Thanks for the link, I think this one suits my needs although a little big in size/form factor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X5X2Z66

Also found this m2 ssd that should work for my needs 128gb if plenty for me as I don't store much data. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KLTPUU0

Thanks for posting the buyers guide again!

Acer Chromebook 15 (Yuna) 4gb RAM, Upgradable m.2 SSD, Core i5-5200U CPU, 1080p full HD display. It's really great.

u/DopePedaller · 3 pointsr/GalliumOS

I've used these on several machines too. Fairly compact and great sound for the price.

I boot off of a usb 3.0 SSD and it runs good. I use a Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA. I run Ubuntu. If you have usb C though then I would get a USB C SSD, they are even faster.

u/rukialover · 1 pointr/GalliumOS

That looks about right. I know for sure it was Bay Trail and that's the same kind of model.

Reference this just in case: https://www.amazon.com/HP-Chromebook-11-2210nr-11-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B00ZTRWX7C

Yep, its an SD card, this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Memory-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B014IX0234

SanDisk Ultra 64 GB SDXC Class 10, advertised as up to 80 MB/S which I though would be more than enough, but as you said it looks more like a limitation of the slot

u/9646gt · 1 pointr/GalliumOS

I am using the ADATA 128GB ssd in mine without issues. Seems to be the more reliable brand.

Hey, I know the answer to this! An A2 SD card is your best option at the moment until someone makes a low profile USB 3.1 stick that doesn't overheat and throttle.

I tested about half a dozen low profile USB 3.1 sticks while trying to answer this question for myself. Every stick I tested overheats and throttles under load, most throttle so badly that you might as well be using USB 2.0, most hit something ridiculous like 5MB/s when overheated. The only super low profile USB 3.1 drive in the batch that didn't throttle down to ridiculously low speed was the Samsung Fit Plus, and while it didn't throttle to unusable speeds it did still throttle significantly.

The fastest overall performance for interactive use (I run a couple of crouton chroots from and store a steam library on mine) during my testing came from a SanDisk A2 Extreme micro SD card. The USB 3.1 sticks are faster for burst transfers before they overheat, but once they overheat performance drops so low that they're almost unusable.

A couple of notes: I ran that suite of storage tests around a year ago, at the time SanDisk was the only mfgr with an A2 rated uSD card available.

I also have an Acer, I picked up a half-sized SD to uSD adapter and use that so the whole assembly is recessed into the SD slot, it could be a little tricky to get out at some point if it ever comes out at an angle and gets stuck. So far I haven't had this problem but be aware of it if you decide to do the same thing.

You'll need to remount the SD storage from the chromeOS shell so that it's persistent and doesn't disconnect every time the Chromebook sleeps. I have a couple of bookmarks detailing that somewhere, I'll look for them.

I did know that the only options were the Transcend and MyDigitalSSD. I bought the MyDigitalSSD from Amazon a few days ago but I didn't realize that it was apparently bad.

I did some googling and found that MyDigitalSSD has put out a firmware update for the SSDs--at least for the ones that I bought. At least on Amazon, most of the reviews complaining that the SSD broke were in 2014, and I didn't find any after that year so hopefully the firmware update worked. I also saw a review from 2015 which said that the firmware update was included in the SSD that reviewer bought so hopefully I will not have to do the firmware update myself.

I'm hopefully going to have time this weekend to switch SSD's and install galliumOS. If you're interesting in how switching out a MyDigitalSSD goes, I'll try to document it somehow.
