I'm a gimpcel (Is that even a word? It is now!), and I loved the Greek myths as a child. A shameless plug for the two books on the subject that I read dozens of times as a boy:

  • Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths by Bernard Evslin
  • Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton

When I first learned about Hepheastus, I remember giggling and clapping my hands like I had just won a prize. Here was a character I could totally relate to--and he was a Greek God! Imagine my disappointment when he was presented as a living joke.

Even though I didn't understand the nuances of relationships and sex at the time (I was about 8 and hadn't hit puberty), reading about Aphrodite swooning over Ares and "desiring him" really made me angry. I'm not sure if that was the intent the ancients were going for--what we find offensive, or funny, mostly applies to our era--but it still felt like a tremendous injustice. It might've even been the first time I felt romantic jealousy. Not a pleasant memory, but an important life lesson.

>Your one example of a house husband doesn't outweigh all the guys >that are successfully and happily doing it.

I'm sure all 7 of them are living the dream.

> Now you're saying that women don't like to work?

I'm saying women have options and statistically go for "fun" jobs, whereas men have no options and statistically chase money to provide for their families.

>There are plenty of men who work in corporate America in air >conditioned offices.

Most of which are swamped with HR harpies and #metoo bullshit, men are being driven out of the professional jobs, as well as most of academia and being alienated from wider society.

All of this is backed up by hard data, there are entire books written about this subject, you should go do your research.

>it's possible to teach men to do manual labor too

IIRC men are ~%95 of the construction profession and have been since the dawn of humanity.

>I already have a career in construction.

Yesterday you worked in an office, you should probably get your story straight but at this point I already see that you're an ideologue living in her own private idaho.

> Women have to perform just like men do.

Provably false

> On that topic, what about all the guys who post about being "proud" >of living off their parents and playing video games all day?

>My question was what I would possibly miss if I turned male, and after >several replies, you still have no answer.

You have your answers, you simply lack the ability to think outside of your own vagina.

Very painful. This thing about opening up is a big dilemma. We see it all the time....like who can we trust to tell about a serious problem, or a side of us that many people do not understand. Try to take it easier on yourself when you can, life can be very harsh already without adding self-anger.

Families can be a source of both love and pain, and so it's actually non trivial dealing with family. I was reading in this book about how as adults... sometimes we can kind of choose a new family /support network, something every human needs.

The book is about people who recovered long-term from serious mental illness (like schizophrenia) without medication, with essays from a number of those people.
it's a short book but I often find myself going back to it.

> I'd love the OP to get together with the parents of E. R and some psychiatrists and try to figure out what happened with these young men. Is there some kind of disorder that could be diagnosed and treated.

Truth be told, I'm pretty sure it's just an extreme case of depression. Have you had a chance to read The Pain Behind The Mask: Overcoming Masculine Depression? It's a pretty fascinating book. The authors argue that most depressed men exhibit their depression in a different way, through anger and extremism, as opposed to the banal apathy that is commonly associated with depression. It should be required reading for everyone on this subreddit, imo. It provides a LOT of context into why incels are the way we are.
