I wouldn't call it definitive, but I'm pretty sure that in his book Elegant Complexity: A Study of David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest Greg Carlisle posits several thematic-type things that unify the various shorter sections in chapters with circle headings.

I remember feeling like this at the beginning. The Eschaton scene is what finally convinced me that I had to stick with the book because I was in for a ride. Bearing in mind that I'm picking up the book for the 3^rd having failing to stick with the book previously. This time I am *so* glad I decided to complete the read at all costs.

I'm not what copy of IJ you have but if it's the same one as mine^1 you're about ~15/20 pages from the previously mentioned Eschaton section. I was told the same thing I'm telling you which you can read here. u/ETAGrammarian and u/Asshole_Salad were completely and 100% correct on their advice imo. It's still my favourite scene of the book and I still have ~400 pages to finish the book. Been where you are OP but I think you'll really like the story. I say, just keep reading.

I've previously read the thing on Kindle, and it had a lot of your standard Kindle-type typos (like constantly confusing "n"s for "r"s and so forth), but none of this stuff. The overlapping isn't possible, and you have to remember that the Kindle affords readers the chance to highlight and report specific typos, so it's possible to continuously see things corrected.
