Glen Canyon was almost lost during severe flooding in 1983. That would have caused a failure downstream at Hoover so you can imagine how catastrophic it would have been. Also, The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon is an awesome book that goes into a lot of details about the dam's history and the events surround the 1983 flood.
I mean, there are entire books written about the unique Brazilian relationship with communication and transportation infrastructure, but okay.
