In addition to checking out here, I would poke around the local gaming shops. Rolling Gnome is probably a good spot to try.
Also, think about what type of game you're looking to play.
Are you wanting high fantasy, high magic, sort of like a mix of harry potter and Lord of the Rings?
Or maybe something more intrigue focused, like Game of Thrones?
Are you wanting to keep sci-fi and fantasy separate, or are you ok with a blend?
Are you wanting to solve puzzles, get into fights, or...?
What degree of complexity/customization do you want from your characters? (The simpler the system, the more same-y the characters are; as a converse, the more customization you can bring for characters, the more fiddly little rules come into play.)
All of these are significant considerations.
Now, I might be a bit biased in suggesting The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, but it offers absurd customization, has an excellent beginner package, and all of the rules are 100% free (and available online.)
D&D 5e, on the other hand, has a significantly simplified system. This isn't a bad thing; it vastly reduces the amount of math needed while leveling up or changing what items your character uses regularly. This can make things easier for newer players, and reduce the overhead mid-fight if you have one or two people who have built batman-like. Additionally, 5e has a much...flatter power curve, and is better for a fantasy setting with less magic.
Count yourself lucky bro, we've killed like 25 Brown Recluses this summer in our house and garage.
We caught a bunch of crickets in our garage as well using the spider traps. They're cheap and super effective.

I have two window-mounted AC units. Each are capable of cooling a 10x10 room without a problem. I'm hoping for $40 obo.
I'll see if I can get some pictures up soon. Here's a picture of the older one. Here's the newer one and [the amazon link] (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003F4TH6G/) that I got it from a year ago. I hadn't cleaned them up when I took the photos, but I will do so before you buy them. The newer one has been sold. Thank you /u/chz_plz.
I'll second pretty much everyone that has mentioned using one of the flat antennas. I have the amplified Mohu Leaf. I'm able to attach it to a window that is essentially on the second floor of the house facing KC. I get pretty much everything without issues, unless the weather is somewhat severe. If that is the case, a couple of the stations come and go a bit, but generally speaking i have no problems.
For the price, I'd be very tempted to try the Monoprice antenna that was mentioned. I'm a huge fan of their cables, so if their other products are of similar quality, it is likely money well spent.
Here's a link to the Mohu that I have:

This is possible, but there are a lot of variables that will control how difficult it will be. I've done this twice before, once at Rockland West, which uses Pavlov, and once at a place outside of Lawrence using babtel.
Whatever the set up is, a modem is not going to help you unless you plan on going through a different internet service provider.
Look for a router that has a RJ-45 port (AKA Ethernet port) for your WAN (uplink) connection. A cheap example is this guy.
Can you provide more info, like:
Who the internet service provider is
If you're sure the Ethernet port works. Have you plugged in a laptop/desktop computer and confirmed it has connection to the internet?
[edit] This is all assuming you're talking about an apartment complex where you don't have the landlords modem in the apartment with you. Is that right?
just saying
If you've never read Emergency, I highly recommend it. The author tries all forms of catastrophe prepping and in the end learns that community CERT programs are the most valuable way to get disaster training and, more importantly, get plugged in with your community. If something bad ever does happen, this is how you'll want to be prepared.
