The Wii U is great. Can you get it cheap anymore though? They've ceased production, so the price is only going to go up, right?

At first I was going to say, yeah, totally, get a Wii U! But then I remembered the console is only part of the investment.

Downloading Games: If you're like me and hate discs, you'll want to get a hard drive like this one. The Wii U only has 32GB of internal storage and some games take a lot of space. For example, Smash Bros is 15.6GB. And yes, you need a weird external USB hard drive with its own wall plug since the console won't provide enough power on its own.

Multi-Player: If you want to play with other people, you'll need some more controllers. Got any WiiMotes laying around? Those work, though many games like Nintendo Land require the Wii Motion Plus ones specifically.

Playing Smash Properly: If you really want the authentic Smash Bros experience, you'll also need a GameCube adaptor or two and a bunch of GameCube controllers. You can use up to 8 controllers in this way.

The costs start to add up a bit. Though, maybe just for me because I like Smash Bros. There's a lot of other good games on there though. Definitely check out Mario 3D World.

>I don't even have the meaty masculine hands of a real man

I laughed out loud at this. It's been a long day at work, and this made my day better.

The switch needs a capacitive stylus. I recommend the amazon basics stylus. It has 3 different sized points.

Some might think $8 is too much for a stylus though, but I can say this one feels great and is high quality.

Otherwise, you can probably find one at the dollar store or wherever for cheap.

This is the best option I can think of. I have it and I must say the d-pad on it is quite nice. It only works in handheld mode though.

Edit: Wanted to add that there is a Mario and Pikachu variant of it alongside the Zelda variant.

Edit 2: What Pro Controller do you have? Do you have Nintendo's official wireless Pro Controller or do you have one of the officially licensed Pro Controllers made by companies like HORI, PowerA and PDP?

Pokken Pro Pad for me, if it's got all the buttons for normal gameplay. https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Tournament-Controller-Officially-Licensed-Pokemon/dp/B01A6LEXFK/

Probably won't work for Make Mode because of the radial menus there, but for platforming it'll probably be great. Dpad on this thing is the stuff dreams are made of.

This is the one i got, best of both world here, even though i do agree with you on the squishy one, moves along the screen much nicer than the plastic disc.

This is what I got:

4-pack for $8.99 and they feel great. Came in less than two days with Prime. Feels/works great.

I really should test this as I have all the components to hand (and will do later if need to, but) this could work?

It would just mean having that dongle attached to the bottom of the switch, but if it was up on a stand and you were using a controller to play and stylus/controller to edit, then that's a possibility.

When a HDMI is plugged into the bottom but not the dock, does it still act like the doc and turn the screen off? If so, you'll be buggered regardless.

This things d-pad is great. It works with any game that doesn't require control sticks.

Edit: This is only useful for playing stages. The editor has functions bound to the control sticks.

Not sure if it's widely recommended, but I got

This one

And it's been great so far.

I've been using this 8bitdo adapter with the SNES classic controller. It says its a wireless adapter but you can also use it wired, which is amazing.

The only drawback is that the SNES classic controller doesn't have joysticks, so you can't really use it in editor. So stupid that you can't move the camera or cursor with the DPAD. But aside from that, it's basically perfect for actual gameplay.

This is what I use and the mesh tips work great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M9JKECQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Gonna put it in stylus mode and try now to see if I notice a difference, but it always worked fine before...

Edit: Didn't really notice any difference, but works fine still so.

Yeah, understandable. There is a Pro Controller that might feel more comfortable:

u/matej86 · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

I bought this one and absolutely love it. It feel very sturdy.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071JY98QL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uv9gDbQP4D51B

Despite it being on the UK site it actually shipped from the US so might be cheper for any transatlantic cousins that want one.

u/RedMamba0023 · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

we have the same problem in the Super Smash Brother Ultimate world. I ended up buying this to connect the switch to the modem, hard wired: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQM8586/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I still play vs. people who lag, but my connection is a lot better.

This is the best (dot matrix!)

Rhodia Wirebound Notepads - Dots 80 sheets - 6 x 8 1/4 in. - Black cover https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B9BWB0G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ld07Cb03YW81Y

u/KeKoSlayer29 · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

I got this one. It works incredibly well for me. Especially the tip with the flat part on it. (I'd get a screen protector as well if you don't have one just because there's probably a large chance of scratching if you use that tip)

u/lcpckpchess · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

Here's the one I got.

I prefer the mesh tip to the plastic tip, or the rubber tips you'll see on most of the capacitive styluses. It's basically a micro-fiber cloth so it slides really well and you clean your screen as you work!

u/jhutchi2 · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

This might work. Amazon Basics stuff is usually solid and it's 8 bucks so if it turns out to not be great then it's a pretty small investment.

u/morrison22e · 3 pointsr/MarioMaker

This is the one I ordered. I received it and checked it out. It’s very nice and pro feeling. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JY98QL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zhc7CbAZYVFB3

u/bharatb17 · 1 pointr/MarioMaker

This 8bitdo Bluetooth adapter supports the nes/snes Classic controllers or game cube controller with the switch:

u/lostpretzels · 15 pointsr/MarioMaker

A capacitive stylus is what you're looking for. This is the one I got, it works amazingly with SMM2. There's probably others worth looking at too though!
