You will also need an extension cable to crack open one end, a capacitor, soldering iron and some electronics knowledge to read the schematic. Also a drill set, including a 30mm holesaw for that arcade button. I didn’t realize that the second button on top was actually a duplicate button, but wired it up all the same.

I second the suggestion that it's probably dirty connectors - I mostly buy loose cartridges for my Master System and they almost never work first time in my console, I need to clean them before they work (ones kept in the original plastic cases might be less prone to this, though).

I take the cartridges apart, spray the edge connectors with contact cleaner, wipe off any excess with a kitchen towel, then reassemble. This normally resolves any issues with the games refusing to start (either taking me to the built in game or "software error" screen).
