I've worn lip-fur for a while, both waxed and unwaxed... I'll give you two suggestions on how to handle the issue.

  • (A) Trim out the center. I know you said you don't want to trim the whole thing, but you might consider trimming out the center. I do this as a matter of course with my stache. I normally wear a handlebar, or an unwaxed handlebar, and this keeps it really looking smooth and intentional. I think there is a trend (as is the whole love for moustaches) these days that tends towards the idiotic impulse that 'bigger is always better'. not the case. An unkempt, wild, untrimmed moustache is really just a blank canvas, and your razor and scissors the brush.

I don't trim out the outside too much, just the occasional stray hair. but the center definitely gets pulled back shorter as I get more towards the center. In your case, this would limit the amount of hair that is bugging the tar out of you, but still give you length for it to blend into the beard.

  • (B) a low-hold moustache wax. I am one of those assholes who believes that not all moustaches should be waxed, and that full beards and waxed moustaches are rarely a good combo. So I'm not going to suggest you go with a big curl on top of your bushy beard. However, a low hold wax (like [Colon Conk's Wax] (www.amazon.com/Colonel-Conk-Moustache-Wax-made-USA/dp/B000RGYUVM) will keep it out of the way for a couple hours at a time, but not give it a thin, compacted look. You'll need to re-apply periodically, and it doesn't hold up to heat very well.

I've been working through a couple of variations of my own moustache waxes, but haven't actually been able to get a good recipe for this yet (and I have actually been trying recently for this exact thing), so I can't really give you good suggestions for a DIY Solution.

That's what I've got man... Good Luck!

I'm going on 4 years now and here is my daily routine:

  1. shower/brush teeth/wet stuff/etc
  2. using a comb and a blow dryer on high heat/low fan, heat my stache and gently pull the comb through it to remove debris
  3. using a moustache/beard brush and the blow dryer on high heat/low fan, I brush each side out vigourously
  4. I use a mini flat iron http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001T0HHAG before it gets completely hot to iron the kinked hairs into a nice orderly curl
  5. I heat a bit of handlebars or wild oregon hair moustache wax with the blow dryer and apply it to my moustache
  6. enjoy compliments

Deathgrip - this stuff is awesome, uses pine tar and is a rubbery solid even in summer heat (unlike all those oily ones that just melt). Takes some determination to soften to apply in winter, but is well worth it and you feel like you're in the woods all day.

I bought a couple Kent moustache combs on Amazon. I lost the first one, so bought two the second time. If you buy clubman wax (also found on amazon), it comes with a little cheap comb.

On a side note, if you do buy the kent combs on amazon, I'd consider also buying a hair comb or two, as you may be able to get free shipping and the combs are great. I don't work for kent, by the way. ha

If you go this route, I'll give you a little advice on applying the wax. It is a very firm/stiff wax, which can be somewhat problematic in getting some out of the tin and spread over the whiskers. I find warming it a bit with a hair dryer before scraping my thumbnail across it really helps. Then I work it between my fingers and apply it by pinching/pulling it from the top of the stache down to the tips. I also highly recommend a good moustache comb, like a Kent 81T.

I like my handlebar to have a very strong hold, so I use Got2b Ultra Glued Invincible Styling Gel after an application of clubman's wax. Sometimes I use a hairdryer to dry the gel.

I've been using this stuff for a while, and I like it, but I wish they made it in brown. It's got a good hold, but if I'm not really careful about working it all in I end up with little yellow flecks throughout my mustache. It's also gone from $10 to $15 since I started buying it, but a tin lasts a long time so that's not a big deal.

Thanks, that's what I ended up doing basically.

I've got a few combs/brushes:
Moustache: https://www.amazon.com/Kent-Handmade-Beard-Moustache-X-Small/dp/B00354XMH6/ref=sr_1_12_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1479324660&sr=1-12&keywords=kent+comb
Beard:

Are there other's you'd suggest I go for?

I've been using this beard oil post-shower, though I've got the oils to make my own just haven't had time: http://www.cvs.com/shop/beauty/hair-care/treatments/nuance-salma-hayek-healthy-shine-nourishing-oil-2-oz-prodid-1013469?skuId=949622

along with tea tree oil before bed.

And per the wiki/searching this subreddit, I've been using this tacky daily to keep the longer moustache hairs out of the way: http://www.firehousemoustachewax.com/Products.html (works so good!!)

Thanks for the review, it's been going well!

I make my own wax but I definitely recommend a Kent's moustache and beard comb. Kent 81T- Men's Handmade Beard/Moustache Comb, X-Small https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00354XMH6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_H2USzbAY79Z88

Oh, boy. It's been a bit of a struggle. My right (your left) mustache has been an issue from day one. It wouldn't grow the same, it wouldn't train, and it wouldn't cooperate.

The general consensus is that you do not trim it and just let it do it's thing while you train it to grow the way you want it to. I've been so fed up with my right stache that I've trimmed them both down to same size 3 times before it finally cooperated. I told myself that after the 3rd trim and it did not cooperate that I would shave it all off and try again another time.

This time, however, I took better care of it. Every morning in the shower, I'd wash my hair and my moustache with the dandruff shampoo I use for my head. When I get out, I put 0.5ml of Minoxidil that I rub in, and 4 drops of beard oil that I brush in. I brush my moustache out, each side, threeish times and call it good. Then while I'm on my way to work, I'll comb through it a couple times and mindlessly curl/ play with it throughout the day.

Is it right? I don't know, but it appears to have worked for me.

  1. Get the stiffest wax you can find. Stiffest I've found is Can You Handlebar Secondary, YMMV.

  2. Heat wax on your fingertips with a blow dryer. Requires you to be a bit of a masochist. I may be developing a hot wax kink.

  3. Spread that shit on, all the way down. Get your whiskers as straight as you can, perhaps with slight upward curl.

  4. Here's where we get a little crazy. Gonna need one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LFA1SY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_mFtJxbC4X2D9K once you got that, plug it in for 10-15 sec max. Warm enough that you can still touch it with your fingers. This is important, otherwise you'll fry your hairs over time (if not immediately) and/or burn your face. I speak to both points from experience, sadly.

  5. Clamp down lightly and roll softly, smoothly melting the wax and giving your whiskers a nice round mold to conform to. Draw outward slowly at the same time if you want more sweeping curls. Takes some practice but it will set your wax and your curls for the entire day, guaranteed. And once you get the hang of it, it's faster than setting it by hand (if that ever worked)

This is obviously the method I use, check my submission history if you want to see the results.

You should try one of these. Great comb specifically for a tache. Kent's moustache and beard comb. Kent 81T- Men's Handmade Beard/Moustache Comb, X-Small Kent mustache and beard comb

I used Bounder Extra Firm Moustache Wax in the early stages of my moustache when it was shorter, but now I use a medium hold wax from Beardbrand; the longer my moustache has gotten the less wax is need to keep it out of my mouth, often I will not use wax at all anymore. If I am going to drink beer or wine, I will definitely put on some wax.

I use a combination of Oregon Wild Hair and Clubmans. During the colder time of year I only use Oregon Wild Hair.

Hair dryer to tame the beast and Hungarian wax (Stern)to bind it (too much LotR lately)

u/hedgehogsinhats · 1 pointr/Moustache

I'm using this guy that I found cheaper on Ebay. Excellent scissor. And as for how I did it, I just combed it downwards and tried to snip things that stood out from the middle and outwards, a little peice at a time careful not to cut too much by accident. The thing is, when I look myself in the mirror I see stray hairs that stick out and to me it looks anything but even, but others that aren't as close up to me as I am have no idea.

You could pick one of several manly choices

  • Fresh crude from a Texas Oil Derrick
  • Coal you mined out yourself
  • Used Pine tar
  • Powdered Boxing gloves
  • Or the actual black pigment, Iron(II) Oxide
