Most of his life, yea. I adopted him from a shelter in El Paso in graduate school. He had a crooked leg - the vet tried to fix it but it just kept going right back, so we left it. Around 5 years old (ish) he quit using it so we just took it off.

We've always been pretty active - lots and lots of hiking, especially in the mountains, and I'd taking him running with me (he'd set the pace, usually off leash, average run was probably about 3-ish miles). We also did some 'core strength' work using stability pads ( like this and this ). We've had to use shoes (ruffwear is awesome because they'll sell you one size shoe for the paw that is by itself (usually bigger than the other two) and then the small size for the other two, about $15/shoe) to go hiking because he was having a hard time with his pads (he cut himself twice on completely different hikes on rocks). We've also had to use a harness with a handle on the top more lately just to help him over obstacles. As time goes on, we take more breaks and use a combination of CBD/anti-inflammatory foods/holistic pain management stuff to deal with joint/pain issues (I try to use prescribed pain-management pills only when needed - I get worried about liver function). Lots of good joint supplements ,more as time goes on (fish oil, glucosamine/chondroitin/msm, etc).

Overall, I don't know exactly what helps, any of that could, but it could just be good genetics too.

Either way, I owe that dog my life, so he gets whatever he wants.

That's great. When our dog got older, we found that they sell large dog stroller on Amazon (like this one). Worked wonderfully - we'd walk over an hour every night and he'd sit in there barking at everyone. It was such a boost to his mood to be able to go on long walks again. One of the stroller we had for another dog was such a perfect size - we could just take the handle bar off and put in the back of our CR-V and take her to her vet appointments without having to move her into/out of the stroller for the trip. Made life so much easier. Great job!

Thank you! It’s a car seat hammock and it’s definitely a must have! I absolutely love it, and have had mine for years. I bought one for my boyfriend’s truck and my SUV. This is the one I have, but there are lots of different brands. And congratulations on your new addition!

Do it, you won't regret it. She'd do it for you. There are cheaper ones but I got this one so we can still go on trails and places more interesting than just sidewalks. Getting the ski attachments for the snow shortly.

I have a 14yo little dog, started her on Cholodin supplement, you can buy them on Amazon or at Walmart. It's made a big difference in her attitude and happiness. She seems less confused and hasn't had anymore pee accidents. You could give it a try, hope this helps!

She's on

  • two Precious Paws a day,
  • a Cosequin a day,
  • half a Rimadyl twice a day
  • two Tramadol twice, sometimes three times a day

Up until the last week or so she's been fine going up stairs, but now she's hesitating and even trying to jump a few stairs? Not sure if it's mental or what.

Going down the stairs though, I tried using a harness to take some of the weight off but she wouldn't move at all. I've been just walking beside her and holding onto her collar in case she slipped I could grab her and just help her right back up, but now she's having trouble even taking a step at all without her front ankle joint going out when going down the stairs
