>The bible specifically says he did not sleep with her until after Jesus was born. If he never slept with her then it would not have used the word until. It would have simply said and Jospeh knew her not, or said and Jospeh knew her not for her whole life.

Ok. Let's imagine the scenario and work it out. I'm honestly thinking and typing at the same time here..

If the bible said Joseph didn't know Mary ever, then that means it's what? Many things..

For one: what they did was very holy and righteous, therefore is sex in marriage worse than no sex in marriage? Result: fewer Christian babies, fewer souls to glorify God.

With a seed of doubt allowing an alternative explanation to allow an alternative reality to the truth of the matter, we have this tension instead of people thinking married couples shouldn't be having sex.

These were not normal people. That can't be the case. God is way too important to rely on the free-will choices of normal people. These were the holiest couple we have known.

This is a subject I was very interested in about 15 years ago. I believe there was a book that was in progress at that time cataloguing all these changes and how they might affect understanding. I will see if I can dig out my old notes and find what it was. If I remember right, part 1 had been finished and the author promised one or two more parts…

Update: Found it, and if I recall correctly, it didn't turn out to be what I was looking for at the time: White's Dictionary of the King James Language, vol. 1 A-E: Understanding Bible Words as they were used in 1611.
