  Also there's the book "Ardientes Fulgores de Gloria" (Shining Beacons of Glory) that narrates the separation of Panama from Colombia. The intrigue involved is worthy of a Tom Clancy novel.
  
  Finally, in 1989, USA invaded Panama. There are several documentaries about it, I believe Netflix had a few. Abner Benahim has one called "Invasion" that I haven't watched yet. Another one, "Panama Deception" even won an Oscar for best documentary in 1989!

I’m not certain Panamá City meets that description, particularly around beach access and safety. Never learned it in school here, but the whole story of the Scottish settlement in Darién is featured prominently in The Path Between The Seas by David McCullough. I read it shortly after high school. “Thrilling” isn’t an adjective I would normally use to describe a non-fiction book, but the way McCullough pieces the history of the canal with the history of Panama and the various countries and personalities invested in the project(s) at one point or another is superb.
