Oh and re: "tough on crime" policies are really just code for excusing militiarized police forces going into neighborhoods and communities largely populated with black and brown people and arresting people - often for no reason at all. In fact, a great example of that was how the police operated in Ferguson, MO. Of course, the Michael Brown situation brought attention to it, but they literally used the citizens there as a way to force revenue flow. Arresting them for dumb stuff, like "intention to jaywalk" - things that aren't even crimes. When they couldn't pay the tickets, they'd wind up spending time in jail, losing their jobs, etc. And the cycle continued. They also routinely roughed people up and even killed them for little to nothing. This has been a national strategy among law enforcement for decades. It's the new Jim Crow, which is mass incarceration.
