I think reforestation is an important part of carbon mitigation, but I definitely don't think it should be the only means of tackling climate change.

Regardless, you've made several mistakes. You're off by a factor of ten for carbon capture through photosynthesis by trees, it's about 56 kgC/year per tree (Annual Review of Energy and the Environment).

While deforestation may increase the albedo and consequently also the cooling effect - this is only true north of 45 deg latitude. This cooling effect diminishes the further south you get, and with a net warming effect south of 35 deg latitude. Adding more trees in the equatorial latitudes would be beneficial for the climate and also help increase biodiversity. (Nature)

Not going to bother checking your arithmetic since many of the base assumptions are wrong, but it's still good to think about the math behind what it'd actually take address climate change on a global scale. I recommend you read Consider a Spherical Cow. It's a great book on environmental problem solving. Understandable for interested people who aren't in the STEM field and shows you how to solve for approximate solutions to real world problems. I think it gives really good insight into a variety of environmental issues.

> Swell. Musk's kids love him, but he's also changing the world.

He's not changing the world. He is standing in the way of progress.
Those are very distinct things.

HERE I WILL SHOW YOU.
Look at these solutions to urban travel.
https://images.app.goo.gl/pYQYbv45EbJQQ2se6

Look at which one is best, and then look at which one is worst.
Elon musk is backing the WORST one.

elon musk is holding back progress.

>Norway is environmentally friendly

I guess global warming is solved then.

>He's working on it harded than anyone else.

He's not working on it at all actually. Since elon musk has started his companies there has been no effect on average c02 rise. None at all.

If elon musk is the dude you are waiting on to save humanity, then we are ALREADY DEAD.

>Okay with that statement there you are officially cuckoo.

You don't seem to be informed about future moon plans like I am.
https://www.china-briefing.com/news/china-proposes-establishing-moon-based-special-economic-zone/

That kinds sums up our entire conversation. I am informed on these issues and you WORSHIP ONE MAN.

I understand it though, I know people, very wealthy people down here in florida that WORSHIP tony robbins. Same psychological phenomenon.

>You better email Elon and clue him in then, Mr. Know it All.

Just send him this book. https://www.amazon.com/Mars-Direct-Robert-Zubrin/dp/0974144355/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=mars+direct&qid=1574191973&sr=8-1

If I ever email elon musk it will be to say.... "hey I heard you got kicked out of a swinger party because you were being an annoying aspy. Do you have the address of the next one? ya know ..for science"

>I ain't buying it.

and I am not buying the elon musk is working for humanity line.

doesn't matter, tomorrow I will still be me despite someone online not believing some anonymous comment on reddit.

>Work on cars, but not design or build cars

I worked on a couple small time race teams and did some fabrication. So technically I have built more cars than elon musk has.

>Incorrect. We write about the good shit. We shine a beacon of truth on the world.

bullcrap. journalists are not smart enough to know what is good or bad. You are talking to a grown man. I am old enough to know with first hand knowledge that "journalists" are pretty fucking stupid. And they always have agendas. And they are usually basing decisions on emotions.

you are just fame chasers, you wouldn't even know where to find the nearest hackerspace/makerspace.

You journalists are weirdios that believe some crazy postmodern siht man.

>You first.

I am actually overwhelmed with your brain development that has obviously made you a very mature person.
That was sarcasm.

>Journalists keep the world honest

No christopher hitchens is dead, now it's just an ocean of click bait dyed haired freaks talking about "which race has more privilege in starbucks!". "journalism is dead.

>Because it's evil.

calling science evil. calling the search for cures evil.
I think this conversation has come to it's inevitable conclusion, you are a postmodernist that values nothing. You don't have any core values to base a worldview upon. Just selfishness and greed.
It's why elon musk's brand of CONSUME TO SAVE THE PLANET activism resonates with you so well.

>Tesla is not a get rich quick scheme.

I am pretty sure it is. Example https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-16/musk-stands-by-tesla-appreciation-claim-called-really-dumb

>How many all together, like 80?

all for nothing if it's not sustainable.

>It saves humanity from economic and climate meltdown by reducing dependency on fossil fuels and also reducing the release of C02 into the atmosphere.

ONCE AGAIN, for the slow journalists amongst us....
Since elon musk has started his companies... human oil consumption has INCREASED. C02 in the atmosphere has INCREASED.
He is doing absolutely nothing.

>Or maybe should have just quit after PayPal and sat around in his living room and talked BS on Reddit?

LESS C02 would be in the atmosphere today and thats a fact. Those factories take a lot of energy to build and use.

>He worked for it.

I got a photo of him going to china to beg investors for investment in a factory.
Thats not work. Thats not earning.

>No dear, he is producing 100,000 electric cars a month

Less than 10K actually.

It's a very tiny car maker.
Very small.

Most popular is probably Images of America: Malibu. I get compliments on that all the time. https://www.amazon.com/Malibu-Images-America-Ben-Marcus/dp/073857614X

Most successful is The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little. He sold 10,000 copies of that at $100 to $250, and that's good for a book: https://clarklittlephotography.com/products/shorebreak-art-limited-signed-edition

Skateboard: The Good, the Rad and the Gnarly was translated into French and almost won a 3000 Euro prize for Sports Book of the Year in France. They were going to fly me to Monaco and put me up in the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel, and the thing was, I didn't even know they had translated it into French.

The hardcover versions sells for over $100, which is shocking: https://www.amazon.com/Skateboard-Style-Stoke-Hardback-Common/dp/B00FKYPZJM/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=The+skateboard+marcus&qid=1567218903&s=gateway&sr=8-5

This is the French version. I like the cover better: https://www.amazon.com/Skateboard-rue-rampe-Ben-Marcus/dp/2366025408/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=skateboard+de+la+rue+a+la+rampe&qid=1574212512&s=books&sr=1-1

Those are probably the big three.

Here's all of them: http://www.benmarcusrules.com/books

Engineering Ethics is a field and a specialized one in the sense that it is largely driven by engineering best practices and refined by history. Therefore, unfortunately, this is a topic which cannot be concisely described.

The application of ethical engineering is, at times, subjective - that is, open to interpretation based on the lack of visibility around the safety dimensions on a new technology.

One aspect of Engineering Ethics that is much less open to interpretation is what happens when death occurs as a direct or indirect result of the technology being developed. A death or serious injury should immediately put into motion a series of very transparent and public (if the technology is publicly-available, which Autopilot is) concrete actions to diagnose and modify the program.

From my perspective, this did not happen after the crash in Mountain View. Instead, the consumer was blamed which was not only inappropriate and seemingly cold, but again, raises ethical questions that were not there before.

That is not to suggest that it is acceptable to ship known issues that are safety-related to the public. It is not acceptable.

One of the firm principals of Engineering Ethics is the knowledge that, sometimes, immediate business concerns might conflict with ethical behavior in product development. The proper application of Engineering Ethics always dictates that the protection of the consumer comes first.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and/or check out a few of these resources:

One of my favorite books on Engineering Ethics

The Wikipedia page which actually shows some pretty compelling case studies that are somewhat similar to the Autopilot program (potentially).

Wow thanks for the gold and the sticky, glad to see other people find this interesting too. Not gonna lie I'm also pretty excited about getting tweeted by MachinePlanet.

It's easy to draw parallels between any 2 things, but the volume of similarities here goes beyond that. I reread Bad Blood recently and didn't see nearly this much overlap. The main takeaway is that both Enron and Tesla started out with good intentions but their arrogance wouldn't allow them to admit when things needed to change.

Anyone interested in this type of thing should definitely check out The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron. Here's a few other recommendations that cover business failures. And of course if you haven't read Bad Blood yet do that as soon as possible, can't recommend it highly enough.

Sure it is, if it's the right kind of hat. Why do you think everyone is wearing the same hat? And the same goggles? For safety.

Cheap laser diodes are very hard to stabilize. Might have better results from a HeNe.

I've got a massive granite slab floated on water filled truck suspension bags. A good substitute is a deep box filled with sand and a piece of kitchen thickness granite counter on top. Tack everything down with beeswax for alignment.

If you don't already have it, get this book ==> Scientific American -- Light and Its Uses, a collection of articles form C.L. Strong's The Amateur Scientist.

A great read about what went on in the GM plants in the 70's and 80's.
This kind of stuff goes on everywhere, except for the horse. That seems to be Tesla specific.

u/reboticon · 2 pointsr/RealTesla

I have this one. There are nicer ones, but I wasn't sure how well it would work. It comes with a special piece of film to put on the windshield, but I didn't use it. Because of that, there is a SLIGHT blur in the display, but it isn't something that I personally notice.

If you search for 'Tesla Autopilot' on Amazon these come up as a top result:

In theory, you could carry around jugs of gas for ICE cars.

https://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Can-5600-4PK-Gas-Capacity/dp/B00DW4YLLK

Especially with a large pickup truck, you could carry quite a few of these cans. There is no way to do that with spare batteries at the moment. Plus as you note, the charge time is too long.

This is however a good argument for PHEVs.

If you call Bitcoin a ponzi scheme, you know nothing about Bitcoin, and you know nothing about ponzi schemes. . A Ponzi is something totally different, here's the definition.

BTC has none of the characteristics that define a Ponzi. It's curious how some people use that term, but it quickly shows they are repeating something they've been told by someone else, without doing their own research.

Puzzles me how in 2019 people keep repeating arguments like that instead of learning from any of the many good books out there. Even the Andrea Antonopoulous videos on YouTube have taught a lot of people. He also has books focusing on both the economy and the technology, and they're not only sold on paper (Amazon) but can also be downloaded for free.

In 2011 or 2012 I'd get the "Ponzi and tulips and beanies!" jokes, hell, I fell for them myself and got delayed needlessly. But with the historic data and information available now, man, it's just pure laziness to keep reporting financially and scientifically incorrect arguments. A bit embarrassing.

No I've had multiple cars where the lines are obviously on the inside surface. They sell repair kits for rear window defrosters and obviously none of these kits would make sense if it was inside the glass.

That said, some higher end cars do integrate the lines into the glass these days but it's a mixed bag. You're less likely to have someone damage the lines by accident and thus less likely to need a repair, but if the lines do go bad over time you have to replace the damned rear glass (and they do go bad). Not sure which I'd rather deal with lol
