Not sure how helpful I can be, but I'll give you whatever information I can about what works for my red eared slider. He's about ten years old. The tank is maybe about 4'x2', not sure exactly. At some point we'd like to get a larger one for him, but he's pretty content right now. I use a corner filter to conserve space (Something like this, there should be an option at pretty much any pet store). It keeps his environment mostly clean and I do a deeper clean every month or so where I take him out and wash everything in his tank.

I also have a water heater, it's a little tube that sits in the water and turns on in case it gets too cold. This is important in my area because we have cold winters, but it may not be essential for you. (This isn't the model I have, but something like this might do)

I also have a few large rocks in the bottom of his tank that I switch up whenever I clean just to change his environment a little and give him something new to look at.

Something that I found to be important is having a basking light and a UV light for him, because he's indoors and while he's near a window, it's not enough light for him, especially in winter. I have those set up on a timer so I don't have to remember to turn it on and off every day.

Speaking of basking light, he will need a place that is not in water where he can sit under the light. I used to have a floating island wall attachment for this, but he kept knocking it down, so now I just have two of those filters from above, back to back, and he likes sitting on them. You'll find out what your turtle likes and doesn't like as time goes on. It may be a little expensive getting his/her tank together, but it'll be worth it definitely to have the filters to keep it clean and the lights on timers so his daily upkeep is fairly simple. Sorry I don't have pictures of my set up on hand, I hope you can at least use some of this info!

Well it’s really amazing that you want to do a better job. I’m not going to lie there are days I wonder if I should try to rehome mine but like you I’ve seen how difficult it is. Also I love the thing and I think he might love me too so I try really hard to give him a happy life!

Here’s a good resource:

Also you can feed him lettuce and dried shrimp and other treats.

I use this filter and if you clean it at least once a month it works really really well.

A 10 gallon aquarium would work well for probably the first year and they are cheap can probably get one for $20. Eventually you will need a very large tank 75+ gallons.

Below are the things I think are a must

  1. Good quality food (I wouldn't trust the food they gave you) get the tetra reptomin pellets

  2. UVB light bulb I use these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00101JI2Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fYgaBb9FJH9QF you need a new one every year these are important for good bone health.

  3. Basking light I use these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AR3NU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XZgaBb1DA9VW9

  4. So sort of out of the water basking area is a requirement get creative, tons of diy solutions on line.

  5. Water heater size depending on the tank you get probably $15-40 get a cheap sick on water thermometer.

  6. Filter I would get a canister filter I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GIXCI4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_L1gaBb57EQ739 been using it for 6+ years. This thing is too big for a 10 gallon but if you decided to get a 20, 30 it should be okay and I am using mine in a 75 gallon with plans to move to a 125 in a few weeks.

This site http://redearslider.com has tons of good information.

Check the water and basking area temperatures to make sure they aren't too hot or too cold.

If you had a 55 gallon, this would be simple. The best option is a Turtle Topper, which are made to fit 55g tanks.

There are ways of getting it to work for a 40g tank also if you want to go that route.

For UVB I use Reptisun 10.0, manufacturer recommends replace yearly (UVB stops working long before bulb burns out) but I replace every 6 months. For heat lamps you can use any bulb (not LED) from the hardware store, but I like these ReptiTuff Splashproof basking lamps. The glass is super thick to avoid shattering when your aquatic turtles splash it with water.

Its this one right here

Make sure to angle the heat light towards the stairs to encourage him to go up there
And leave some food up there it’ll make him want to go bask

I have this one. It should work for 10 gallon and you wouldnt need to upgrade it if you get a 20 gallon tank. I set it about an inch horizontally under the surface so that he can rest on it. He loves the heater

Unfortunately no one knows the exact model. After some research I think it might be a Laguna Pressure Flo 700

Only because I can’t find a product with a smaller number of gallons.

We do change the filter. We try not change the water and filter media at the same time unless the smell is particularly bad.
