> You say the cast of FF15 is white and eurasian, but I see a LOT of Asian (and specifically, Japanese) beauty standards and aesthetics represented in them. The main character especially looks very Japanese to me.
They're still white. It's not new for Japanese culture to celebrate white beauty under their own aesthetic. Japanese fashion magazines do it all the time. I'd still call it extremely problematic.
> I don't think Cloud was meant to be Japanese either -- but he is very clearly modeled off of a Japanese person.
I disagree and I think the people who designed Cloud would disagree as well. I think they were just going for an ethereal, idealistic sense of Japanese beauty which tends to sway Eurasian.
> It's why there are arguments about Aladdin being more American than Arabian -- he might have a vaguely "arabian" design, but culturally he exhibits mostly American attitudes. (And in doing a bit of cursory googling, apparently Aladdin was originally Chinese in the 1001 nights! TIL.)
The Aladdin controversy is not so much about Aladdin as it is about Jafar. His features are deeply caricatured whereas Aladdin is "normal".
As an aside, this is an issue that constantly vexes Fiona Staples, the artist behind Saga. The protagonists on the series, Alana and Marko, are supposed to be South Asian and East Asian, respectively. Marko was inspired from a mixture of Japanese models and actors while the model for Alana's mother was Indian and her father "remains a mystery", but he is still a dark-skinned man.
Besides which, what exactly are "American" attitudes and mannerisms? Compassion and a rebellious streak are not exclusive to one culture.
And Aladdin in the original story is Chinese in the sense of the Middle East and North Africa's understanding of "China", which was derived only from rumors and vague reports. Super cool of the BBC to make a series and recognize that by casting Jason Scott Lee, though. I devoured any media I could find of Asian men when I was a kid because I rarely saw myself represented on screen.
> For a more "extreme" example: the manga "Fake" by Sanami Matoh is set in NYC, with a mostly "American" cast. I put American in quotes there, because as much as I love(d) the manga, the character interactions are pretty Japanese. Things like, "are you half japanese? Your eyes are so dark!" and the big emphasis on the sempai/kohai relationship of two of the characters.
That's actually very interesting! I'll have to check that series out. I've also been interested in Eagle, which is a Japanese manga about an Asian American candidate aiming for the presidency, but it's been really hard to track down.
> Anyway. I think it's an interesting question, because even when an author is trying to write foreign characters well, it's very hard to completely remove all traces of your own home culture. Obviously western writers aren't any better at it than anybody else.
I agree. My goal was to point out how pervasive and omnipresent white representation and white beauty standards are. Even Final Fantasy derives the naming and cultural inspiration behind its characters from western fantasy, rarely Asian.
I don't know - I feel like I'm expressing myself badly here.
None of what you are suggesting are bad things. They're all sort of... no-brainers, but I just keep watching these scandals pop up and then fade out, over and over again... it breeds cynicism, I suppose, but I can't help but feel that we must be missing something, or that there's some other way of working at this.
I think part of it is this:
> And improving that relationship by fixing the content coming from the content creator is something I feel is extremely important.
because I just have no faith left in the games industry, much like I have little faith in the movie industry to improve itself, much like I have little faith in the music industry to improve itself. When you strap creativity onto a structure revolving around profit, I honestly don't think that is an avenue we want to be shoring up. The relationship of power between a consumer and a producer in our capitalist system is not equal. I would love to say that things like Bioware finally writing in a gay male NPC is progress, but the very fact that this bafflingly lukewarm tokenism is held up as an example of progressive games-writing is problematic in and of itself.
As to your points about the unique nature of the videogaming community, I believe that it's not specific to the medium, or at least not caused by the medium. It's very, very easy to trace the isolated, gender-segregated history of the tech and games industry, and how that reflects on a) what kinds of games are made and b) who those games are sold to, which leads to c) who gets inspired to make what kinds of games.
Have you read Anna Anthropy's Rise of the Videogame Zinesters? She calls for creation outside of capitalist systems of games-making. It reads more like a manifesto, which I think is a good thing, and ends in with a Twine tutorial. I think you would enjoy it.
eta: In hindsight I think this is a better way of articulating my point.
> we all contribute to the gaming industry by purchasing certain games we choose/enjoy
implies that all games arrive through the capitalist system, and I think that that's not true and also not the best way of doing things. And I would encourage alternatives as a way of trying to encourage or create less toxic communities revolving around games.
The Division. I like this game. It's best with friends and doing the main missions in hard.
You can totally do a holy trinity if you want, but the nice thing is you can chose your points and perks at any time. I don't usually care for pvp stuff, I only went in the dark zone once, and never really met any people so I dunno. I'm lvl 15 and play a tanky smart cover/shield build guy with LMG/shotgun/sawn-off.
The shooting feels good and the mods that give you better accuracy and stability actually are noticeable. The cover system is great and I love that moving between cover is just "look at where you want to go and hold A" and you will go there. And that "moving between cover" is a thing the game knows you can do, and thus has perks based upon it (like reduced damage during the move, or increasing damage based on the distance moved)
The side missions are copy paste but that's fine for me. Walking around the city by yourself and exploring to get lootboxes and collectables is fun since the environmental design is amazing
Also iwant to shout out to the book "The Division: New York Collapse" which isn't your typical tie-in novel. It presented as an actual survival guide that the protagonist finds and uses as a diary by writing in the margins. Then she realizes that the fictional author must have known about the virus that hit NY cause of all these clues she finds in the book. So it's an actual urban survival guide on top of reading about this woman's life post-collapse, on top of doing puzzles and figuring out the conspiracy how the author new about the virus. It even has feelies! Remember those! I was able to grab a copy at a local Barnes and Noble since it seems to be sold out online but you can also buy directly from the publishers website

Urban Chaos. This is an older game from '99 featuring a black lady cop. It plays a bit like GTA3 with some Tomb Raider-esque platforming. The story seems bizarre as it opens with a
NosferatuNostradamus quote about the end of the world. And then in a cutscene some religious zealot assassins try to murder the cop and her partner. Right now I'm just beating up and arresting gangmenbers waiting for the story to take the turn it hinted at in the opening, but it's fun to walk around and talk to people, and explore to find hidden triggerable cutscenes and stat-increasing powerups.-----
I'm one of those weird people who doesnt "get" streamers. I don't have time to watch someone play a game unscripted. I'd rather play games myself. And if I want to watch a game played I'll watch the preplanned/edited/produced videos like giant bomb or YouTubers like mathas, markiplier, or patrick klepeck where I can set it to 1.5x or skip forward when i get bored. I follow one person on twitch and its my personal friend so I can directly chat to him on steam and comment what he's doing in game. And even then I don't watch with rapt attention since its just not entertaining or enthralling to me. The most I got into his game was watching him play system shock 1 and helping him out with stuff since he was being a baby and complaing about not having waypoints or objective list after completely ignoring the 20 audio logs that told him exactly what to do and where.
I picked up:
They are all working great so far. The headphones are a lot louder than I expected, but are also open air so I can hear other stuff going on in my house. This makes my wife a lot happier than my old pair of closed cups :)
The only drawback to the dynamic mic I've seen so far is that I have to be VERY close to it or my voice volume drops considerably. I guess that is just a "feature" of that type of mic to prevent picking up noises it isn't supposed to be. I set up my boom arm to shove it literally into my face, an inch from my mouth while I am sitting back in my chair to play the games.
I have good news. They aren't. Well, that implies there are worse people which isn't awesome but that's not the real point, wait here...let me try again:
I've been reading Thinking Fast and Slow which talks about a theory of how our brains are structured in terms of their thinking processes.
In particular, it focuses on how that affects the way we decided how probably things are.
The good news is that while it works pretty darn well, this is probably partly a spot where (among other stuff) it's more a question of what's easy to recall or What You See Is All There Is and other ideas it presents.
Basically, because it's EASY to remember gamers being assholes we sort of automatically default to thinking it's also really common. This works pretty well, except when you get things like global news and unpleasant things being more memorable.
So it's probably SOMEWHAT that we just more easily remember all the jerks than the no-impact-non-jerks and then we default to seeing them everywhere. (Like when you get a new car and then see that model EVERYWHERE a bit.)
C. G. P. Gray has a nice bit on how pissy things spread faster, as well, which makes it worse.
TL;DR: I don't understand rhetorical or purely emotive questions which weren't expecting an actual response.
Also, I don't know but they really are and I'm sick of all the assholes, too. It wears me out. :/
The creator of Dys4ia (and Mighty Jill Off, and other games, Anna Anthropy) actually wrote a book related to this subject, called Rise of the Videogame Zinesters: How Freaks, Normals, Amateurs, Artists, Dreamers, Drop-outs, Queers, Housewives, and People Like You Are Taking Back an Art Form. Which I haven't read, but I'm sure will interest you.
I really need a new mouse, but they are so hard to find a good one. The fricken "gamer aesthetic" is just embarrassing. It's all hard lines, bright lights, and "sick" logos.
This is my current mouse. I've had it for years. It's actually the second one because I replaced it at some point. I love the scroll wheel unlock thing that lets it spin freely, but little fibers (like dog hair) keeps getting stuck inside the cavity where the laser is. That causes the cursor to randomly stop. In my attempts to clean it out, I think I scratched the lens so now moving the mouse at a constant rate causes the cursor to move a little erratically. I'm forced to slow down my mouse movements and be more deliberate, which makes any game with even a little speed+precision to it difficult.
I ended up ordering this one (hasn't arrived yet as of this post). It doesn't have the scroll wheel thing, but I haven't seen any other mouse with that. This one only has a couple tiny points on the front instead of being absolutely covered in sharp angles anywhere, and it has LEDs, which hopefully can be turned off. It also has DPI-switching on the fly, which I will probably never use.
It seems like all mice are either "for business use and web browsing" or "for gamerz mountain dew mlg420weed", with almost no in-between. As if there's no one that both plays games and does web browsing on the same PC.
Mouse test at work PC
new mouse arrived. first thing i did was open paint and damn that is smoooooth. no clumps at all.
It came back to my mind after browsing through 1001 Videogames You Must Play Before You Die, or rather this interactive list. I don't have a warm spot for JRPGs as a genre since they seem so very grindy and prone to excessive length and my standards for video game narratives have only gone up, but probably I have space for one good JPRG still.
slightly derailing, but has anyone ever read Lovecraft: against the world, against life?
Is it worth my time and money? Houellebecq for me has been pretty much hit or miss and the book has been somewhat hard to find in either english or italian (my french is not good enough for a whole book sadly).
For the laptop heat: Yes, blow out all the dust every few months. Also look into a fan, this one looks good.
You might want to consider getting a controller with vents and a fan built in. I don't have a ps3 so I don't know which are good but here's one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005764CWO/
Subscription is $15/mo with the first month free, discounts if you buy 3 or 6 months in advance. You can also get free months if you recruit new players or "resurrect" players who haven't played in a long time, and sometimes you can find 60 day game time cards on sale as they're fairly ubiquitous.
The trial version is nice if you want to play around with the game, but unfortunately you can't join guilds or chat with anyone that doesn't interact with you first. Give it a whirl at least, and try the dungeon finder when you hit level 15. You can either buy digital upgrades or use boxed copy codes to upgrade from a trial account.
There are 4 xpacs, Burning Crusade, WotLK, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. Burning crusade and Wrath of the Lich King come in the $20 battle chest, Cataclysm is $20, and Pandaria is $40. However these are retail prices and there are often sales (one for Pandaria direct from Blizzard just ended, sadly), and you don't really need these xpacs to start out unless you REALLY want your first character to be a panda or a goblin. The base set will keep you busy for a while leveling your first character or two especially if you're new to the game. I may be able to get a limited number of free xpac codes as well if one is having trouble buying all the expansions and has endeared themselves to the guild :3
Edit: Cata is $15 on Amazon, for instance http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Cataclysm-Pc/dp/B002I0HKIU and pandaland $25.50 (but only one copy?) http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Mists-Pandaria-PC-Mac/dp/B0050SZBP6/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370458709&sr=1-1&keywords=mists+of+pandaria
Edit2: oh and the battle chest for $14 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009716ESA
Is "Eat-Man" a real character?
BTW I was incorrect about Chew, it's about a Cibopath ie he can reclaim memories from whatever animal matter he eats. Sort of like Warhammer 40K Space Marines.

The game of telephone that powers gamergate is already spinning up, I see. Watergate Exposed (not Watergate: Exposed) is a book, not a documentary.
A book from 2011 that is not especially important. And if they are deliberately referencing it, it's probably the most obscure reference Nintendo has ever made.
Also, note how the subtitle refers to the "Watergate Seven", but that little tidbit doesn't reinforce your gaslighting, so it goes ignored.
Within five clicks I was on this page.
"This 5 figure set features female personifications either directly based on or infuenced by WWII era war machines."
The cultural moment of anime.
