One to two feet is a HUGE step. Your foot should be just in front of or behind the other.

Don't push/pull. Be clear. On cross body leads, use your body to lead. Don't make huge motions with a new to you follower at first. Do a right turn, a cross body lead, a right side pass/new Yorker. Very basic stuffnn all with basics in-between. If she follows those you can slowly add hammerlocks, 360s, backspot turns, and copas. If she follows that, and breaks in shines at the right time, congrats, you have a good follow, your lead is clear and the book is open. Do what you want. Just remember that even world champions miss connections, and don't be hard on yourself.

If she doesn't step when you step, she dances a different time than you. If you are doing on one, change to on two and repeat the feeling out steps above. Once something doesn't work, you've identified her level and timing. Just lead what she knows with your own turns, both hands, different hand holds etc to have variety.

If you make her look and feel good, you will look and feel good.

If you didn't know how to adjust to the follow, you need more instruction, practice, and social dancing experience (really, everyone does. This is just saying it's a you problem and can be fixed by you.).

Also, if your original school was very technical, or you've only danced with gifted follows, you may not be aware that you are not clear enough for street dancers/true beginners, respectively. Cut your repertoire when dancing with them and be extra clear and small in your turns. Pay attention to getting her on the right foot before any turn. Pay attention to her body.

When you are new to an area, the follows feel you out too. Be social! Have fun! Watch some! You'll be back to using all your moves soon once some of them become regular partners.

Bonus edit - if you are interested in learning by video, Anya Katsevman's videos have been super helpful for me in both lead and follow and basics -

I've danced for a couple of years now. and i hear most of these issues all the time.

  1. So... when it comes to spins... its something you might want to do at a live class, with a partner and someone watching... butt...you will learn to use less and less of them as you get better. a to of girls don't like to be spun or simply cant.... so i avoid it. every once in awhile ill do a whole bunch of turns with an advanced dancer, but its rare.

  2. I used to rock a mohawk which required some strong stuff. Its called "glue" or "styling glue" This is the good shit I can jump in the pool swim for a bit and my hair would still be good to go. with that said taking it out of your hair is a kind of a pain. as it takes some work to get it off. Alternatively, i use THIS for about half the price. it will get the job done, for most normal hair do's. There's other styling glues out there, so feel free to try whatever catches your eye or fits your budget.

3)meh, just feel the music. be musical. hit the 1's and you will be fine.

  3. anything you feel comfortable in. or you feel fashionable in. it really does not matter.

I've found another video that says it's by Raphy Leavitt y la Selecta.

Anyway, great song!

EDIT: Confirmed, it's Raphy Leavitt y La Selecta. Not available on Itunes.

There are some salsa rhythm apps that are helpful. You can turn on and off various instruments. There's a voice that can count all the beats, some, or none. You can start with the voice, and turn it off a you progress. I used these for dance practice, and now use them for percussion practice.

I recommend this. Has every level from mild to hot but may not be as traditional as you're looking for.

Baby powder is the poor man/womans choice. There's actually something out there specifically for this type of situation though...I've seen people bring it do certain dance clubs. Possibly this.

Edit: Oh...and a small tip....a little bit of either stuff is waaay more than enough.
