Mine has seen pretty rugged use since it released. I've always had cases that protrude outwards a bit and they easily protect the scanner. Highly recommended. This blue one is nice. Which version of the Dex did you buy? There's the round collapsible model or the rectangular one. The rectangular one is a little more flexible but I don't think you're going to be able to get one to easily work with the bulky Otterbox case. I use slim silicon style cases and have to take those off as well. You may be able to find a better USB C extension cable that won't have the same problem. I've also used this HDMI Adapter in place of a DeX and it worked really well (although I didn't use it for extended periods).
I have always been a tempered glass guy... except on the Note9. There is no suitable decent screen protector that doesn't suck. After all of my attempts with protectors, I found this one. It's been great. I could write really well with it and it doesn't wash out the screen like the tempered solutions.

If you purchase, put on the protector just before bed so it can settle all night. Another hint, don't be shiesty when you spray on the liquid before applying. It will make centering much easier.

They've replaced my protector twice, the second time because water got in due to a poor fit.
It's a great company and it works very well.
I've written four four page letters with inkredible pro, the main time i use the stylus. I don't notice any problems caused by the protector.

Just dropped the phone from two to three feet on a tile locker room floor today. No problems, it bounced a bit and is fine.
Definitely recommend the amfilm protector- I've used their iPad mini version too.
