Well you have inspired me to add some further reading to the side bar I will first type out here:
The Sandman Papers
The Sandman Companion
Hanging out with The Dream King
The Lucifer Spin off Series
There was also a spin off series called The Dreaming...the only really good thing about that was the Dave McKean covers...the last arc was alright as well where Daniel actually shows up. The series is mainly about the inhabitants of The Dreaming...it was nowhere near the same caliber of story; Lucifer was.

Super official, it’s a book length interview with Neil Gaiman about every story. A great way to cap the series. And cheap!
I'm envious! There is a Dream/Death bookend at my local comic shop that I wish I could have. I think it's this [one](http://www.amazon.com/DC-Collectibles-Vertigo-Sandman-Bookends/dp/B00BWY1GHO "Sandman Bookend"). I can't complain too much, I mean I do have the complete collection as well as the complete collection of The Dreaming. In any event, great collection!
I know it’s a different Sandman but, I highly recommend Sandman Mystery Theatre. Wesley Dodds was worthy of the mantle.
The Sandman: Book of Dreams is a collection of prose short stories, edited by Neil Gaiman, and is pretty fun.
Destiny: A Chronicle of Deaths Foretold is a three issue mini series.
Sandman Midnight Theatre is a must.
And that might get you into Sandman Mystery Theatre, which ran for 70 issues.
Similarly, The Dreaming series, Lucifer, and The Dead Boy Detectives are all spin-offs.
And then there is The Books of Magic, also written by Gaiman if you want to stay in the same realm of DC/Vertigo magic.
The cheapest intro would probably be buying the first few issues on Comixology and see if you like them. Other than that, pick up the first collection - Preludes and Nocturnes - and see how it goes.
The Dream Hunters actually has two different versions.
It was originally a prose story with full-page illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano: https://www.amazon.com/Sandman-Dream-Hunters-Neil-Gaiman/dp/1840232048
Later, P. Craig Russell adapted it into comic book form, which is the one you linked to.
I've read the first but not the second, so I can't say how important reading both is.
The Amazon.co.uk listing lists July 3rd as the release date. I'll have to preorder!

I was going off this review by Jason on Amazon
Dude. I fucking own all five volumes of this. Don't fucking lecture me.
I'm guessing from this.
I think the one you're looking for is Endless Nights. It's been a while since I read it, though so I don't remember for sure about the Despair story.
Very Late Edit: Delirium, not Despair
I don’t have the Omnibuses, I have the Absolute editions, so I can only speak to them. I can say that they are absolutely worth the money. The pages are bigger, so you get to see more details, the covers are hardy, and I’ve had 0 problems with the bindings almost a decade later. You can’t read them in bed due to the size, but that’s literally the only negative thing I can say about it.
