I like that they encouraged gender switching and then stated that it must be kid-friendly. The fangirl conundrum!

I am curious about what will get published. As an aside, the Sherlock Holmes western has already been written. Holmes on the Range, more of a homage, but still pretty awesome.

That's true. And I do have a nice collection of the stories from another publisher.

But I've seen these versions dominating the shelves and it really just strikes me as very classless - using the stories as merchandising for the show and plastering Cumberbatch and Freeman on the cover, even though the images do not really fit the content or the settings of the books they're on.

On the opposite end of this, Disney republished the original John Cater of Mars stories in 3 big volumes. These books are also mostly in the public domain (besides 1 or 2). The editions they put out weren't plastered with the movie poster or Taylor Kitsch - just a few small drawings that actually reflected what was in the books.

I think that's the right way to go about it. And over here, those books were very hard to find in bookshops so it was really welcome.

Here's an Amazon link.

At first I thought OP wrote the book, now I see OP owns the book. Thanks for sharing.

Now that I've had a chance to look at it on my computer I looked at the books.

  1. Sees a book by a Lavinía Smith.
  2. Google can't find them or the book but Lavinia Smith top results lead to a virologist on Doctor Who.
  3. Confirmed! Mary is actually River Song and her baby is a Time Lord. Well played Moffit.
  4. (That was me joking.)
  5. Next to it is: Systema Naturae 250 - The Linnaean Ark
  6. I'm bored. Someone else do the rest.

As referred to, there's an excellent BBC radio dramatization of a lot of the original stories...nicely done. Right now BBC seems to re-arrange all the rights for their audio books once again, so it might take some digging to be able to buy them, but your library might have them all...mine sure does. Here's a link to one of them, but it's one in about 8 different 6 CD collections...

There's always the limited edition gift set for the new series if she doesn't have it already.

One book I like in particular is The Illustrated Sherlock Holmes, which has the stories that were published in The Strand (including Hound of the Baskervilles) and the Paget illustrations that accompanied those stories.

>every episode has its own.

It is supposed to be just two discs (you can see a track listing in Amazon UK), the third one there being the Abominable Bride Special.

Read the book Mastermind by Maria Konnikova. That's a good place to start. It won't turn you into Sherlock Holmes but it'll get the wheels turning.

This [original illustrated Sherlock Holmes complete collection] (https://smile.amazon.com/Original-Illustrated-Sherlock-Holmes/dp/0890090572/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468812990&sr=8-2-fkmr3&keywords=entire+sherlock+holmes+collection) is a must have for Sherlock fans. It has the original illustrations from The Strand Magazine, which are sometimes hard to access.

Sherlock: Chronicles, the official companion/guide to Sherlock :) It has a bunch of background information on the creation of the show, interviews, artwork etc. And among other things, there are several scenes that were written for the episodes but never filmed, like this one.

Luckily Nixxie has all the deleted scenes on her tumblr (there are links for the other bits in her post).

u/feather_moon · 4 pointsr/Sherlock

It's much more than that--lots of new behind-the-scenes content! Here's a link to it on Amazon.

Here is the .com link for US fans.

> so there isn't any Sherlock playing on BBCA (which is the only BBC channel I have since I live in the U.S.)

Just so you know, in the US Sherlock is shown on PBS as a part of Masterpiece Mystery, not on BBCA (though unfortunately for you I don't think they're showing reruns at the moment)

If you're really uncomfortable with the legality of trying to get the show for free and are willing to pay instead, you can get them on Amazon Instant Video for $5/episode, and the two seasons are also out on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Not only are there allusions to the books, but the books themselves are full of allusions too...

When the Robert Downey Jr. movie was about to come out I sat down with the three volume annotated Sherlock Holmes and learned more about Victorian/Edwardian culture than I could possibly have wanted to know.

Protip though - The annotations are written from the perspective of Sherlock and Watson being real, so there is a fair amount of tortured logic that can be made sensible by slapping the writer in the head and going "It's only a story!"

Honestly I am not in the position to inform, but this book is the best I've seen, it covers from the Magna Carta to Suffrage, and is basically a history of the rebels and radicals or Britain. It says that the suffragists came first, and were strictly non-violent, whereas the Suffragettes, which was first a splinter group angry at the lack of progress, resorted to the types of violence used in Ulster at the time. Unlike the Irish terrorists, they never killed anyone, but they specifically wished to use terror (in the form of arson, window breaking etc.) to get their way. Personally I would much rather we commemorated Millicent Fawcett than the Pankhurst's anyway, as she seemed to be much more involved in the actual governmental side of suffrage.
