I was struggling with mats in my shih for a while and then settled on a decent routine that has kept him mat-free for the last few months. I keep his hair grown out to some degree, but not to the floor (yet).

I brush every other day for around 30 min with this comb:
www.target.com/p/comb-pet-grooming-tool---up-up--153-/-/A-52305812

It isn't the greatest quality, but I like the design and it gets daily maintenance done. If you want a higher quality comb, maybe consider the style and order a better one?

When he gets mats (it's really wet and snowy where I live and he usually gets one or two a week from running in the snow), I like this brush:
Safari De-matting Comb
www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ARR2W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It is basically a curvy one sided blade, so read the directions if you end up trying! It is kind of sharp. My dog doesn't care for this one, but it is so efficient at removing mats I have been convincing him with treats when using it haha.

I have found the best technique is to brush daily to every other day at the latest. I was shocked by how few mats he gets now with the every other day routine. It takes a long time the first few brushes, but once in the habit and mostly mat free, it goes pretty quickly.

Hope this helps!

Hi there! My shih tzu Moose is about 16lbs. Pretty large for a pure bred! He is really comfy in this one right here. He really has a lot of room, and he doesn't over heat since it allows a lot of air. We travel in-cabin about 3 times a year. I also like the simple side pocket for all his paperwork and some treats. I don't know if potato has been on a plane before but you might want to check with the vet on some sedatives or anti-anxiety meds. Moose gets really upset during take off and landing and I give him some doggie relaxers (not tranquilizers just a form of doggy xanex) and he does so much better. I hope that helps and happy travels!

As a basic guideline, the primary goal is to keep them out of the sun and try to cool their paws and tongue when you can.

My buddy goes nuts for YoPup Frozen Yogurt for dogs, which is a great way to cool him down on a hot day!

Proof! :D

He also has an elevated cot that I keep under a table outside. Nice way for him to sit in the shade and cool off a bit. At my parent's house, he found his own spot under a shady tree in the grass and can sit there for hours. But he usually comes inside once it's too warm for him.

From the pics, it looks like it has a snap on the top, so I'd assume its pretty easy. Just lay it flat on the floor, have your dog put his paws in holes, pull it up and snap :)

If it's dried on and crusty it's definitely harder to get out. My go-to tool is a flea comb. I use it while she's in the bath and all soaped up (the soap makes the gunk slide off her hair easier). The teeth are small enough that it gets all the gunk out and that specific model that I linked to is the perfect size for combing with one hand while holding the pup's face still with the other. If your dog won't let you do it, try feeding them treats while you play with the hair around their face and work your way up to using the comb.

American Kennel Club Pet Booster... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JKF7PRC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Best $15 I’ve spent. It has a leash for his harness and works amazing. He was going from person to person to look out of windows or over the side with the top down and I felt scared for his safety, now I don’t have fear. I love it! I’m sure there are more secure ones for collisions and such but we drive down small beach streets going 15 mph so for our need this is a great fit.

Thank you Dylan! By the way, it’s not a pillow it’s actually a toy. My shih tzu loves it! Maybe yours will too :)

Yes, we stamped it! I purchased an ink pad used to take baby foot and hand prints. I did some research and found out that it's also non-toxic and safe to use on your pets!
This is the one I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YRDQBK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NEsOBbRMB3K0N

I like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FQCWTVY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5CTDCbJ7QVAHW for my shih tzu. I spray on and work in https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0081XZWT2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0ETDCb9M8DPAQ or Tropiclean Tangle Remover, 16oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000634IUO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_NFTDCb0CWPPGB first. And if puppy is getting too fussy... Bzzzzzzzz go the tiny clippers. Cause it's better than a matt from a snowball.. snowballing.

We used to use diamond eye on our little gu.! Just put some on a cotton ball, and rub it on the fur under his eyes. We don't use it anymore because the eye booger problem went away thankfully!

I highly recommend this play pen: Parkland Pet Portable Foldable... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E7PHYTI?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Is huge for him and thus provides space so he doesn’t feel confined. I got it for my little guy and he has his bed, a stuff toy bigger than him (recommended to reduce separation anxiety) and his bowls of water and food, along with one of these: Four Paws Wee-Wee Dog Grass Patch... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005BV12XC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

For when I have to go to the office and can’t come home to take him to do his business outside. Potty training him and crate training him has been tough because previous owners did a very bad job, but he is starting to get the hang of it.

Angel Eyes, worked wonders for my tzu when she was younger. Just add it to their food, they don't notice the taste. No more tear stains! And then as she got older, she grew out of it and we didn't have to buy it anymore.

I just saw this thread, but have you tried sulfodene? One of our shih tzus used to get bad hot spots, and it really helped him out. It soothed his itching so he didn't worry at them anymore, and it helped to heal the spots (which were absolutely terrible;, they were these awful angry, crusty, red, oozing sores).

This is the brand I used, and you can apply it directly with a cotton ball or something, but I put it in a little spray bottle.
