Intel NUCs are great for this: http://smile.amazon.com/Intel-Computing-Gigabit-i3-3217U-DC3217IYE/dp/B0093LINVK?sa-no-redirect=1
There are different models and pricepoints (with i5's and i7's) so look around, great form factor for a dedicated streaming box.
> MS Windows wireless xbox 360 controller on Amazon
Link to a legit MS dongle?
As far as I can tell, MS doesn't sell them anymore, but Amazon sells unbranded and branded Microsoft/Xbox ones that are apparently fakes (and some better than others).
A friend of mine bought one and eventually the fuse burned out. It's $15 for another one, so he's not upset about his purchase even if it's not as high quality as the (unobtainable) original.
She was trying to update to v2.6.
Steam Machine she purchased:

We tried the restore option and it just made the issue worse. System freezes at boot now. I was going to do a factory reset with the System Restore Disk, but the link Steam provides isn't very helpful. The instructions mention a sysrestore.zip file, but the link provided has no such file. Its just a directory of folders and files. The folders cant be downloaded, and the instructions don't say which ones to download. The link takes you to the contents of a folder called steamos, but this isn't the parent directory, so I'm unsure of what exactly I need to download.
Steam has been less than helpful. When she contacted them about the system recovery failing and causing the system to freeze they appologized for not being able to help her further and pretty much said "good luck". Ridiculous, awful support system.

If you want to be safe, here is a list of networking stuff that's compatible with Debian. Though I wouldn't worry too much about compatibility issues with wireless cards in steamos. I got this one and it works great even though I don't think it's on the list.
I could see consoles being affordable with AMD Ryzen 5 2400G or similar
It's Quadcore with Radeon Vega RX 11 graphics at $163 for the CPU / Graphics. With the right part selection like PicoPSU and we might makeout at a sub $500 or sub $400 DIY Steam Machine.
Also interesting is the [Hades Canyon NUC](https://goo.gl/DKAxvq]
It depends on the device really. I have this air mouse + keyboard remove, which works over a small receiver. I believe it is wireless, not IR. Minus Hulu, those sites work in the SteamOS browser. However, if you still want an "app" like experience. You can run "web apps" in Chrome's kiosk mode. I have a section of my SteamOS-Tools project for this, call web apps. For that remote, basic functions work fine. I've been trying to add hardware, and encourage folks to do so, under the Valve github wiki
I know a lot of this isn't "native," but it is what it is for now.
Intel Core i3-4340
MSI H81I Micro ITX Board
Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Case
I had an unused 4GB stick of RAM and a 300W PSU and was able to put this system together for about $230. The advantage to the case I chose, was it can fit a full size two-slot video card in it. That means it can fit pretty much every video card ever made in it. I just intend to stream games from my desktop for now, but I was trying to plan ahead. If SteamOS (and Linux as a gaming platform) really takes off, I'd drop an actual video card in it.
You could maybe use something like that:http://www.amazon.com/CompuLab-fit-Headless-Display-Emulator/dp/B00FLZXGJ6
I can not remember when you only have 1 user, but with multiple users, you will need to login before you can stream

I've used ubuntu just fine for my living room PC with no problem. scaled up the font size a bit, then just had steam boot up with Ubuntu. Get yourself one of these keyboards and you're golden.
browsed the web and watched videos on it, then used in-home streaming from steam to play games off of my main PC.
Intel AC 7260, just got it a few days ago, and it works fantastic. I recently upgraded from an Intel N 5300 which also worked. My RALink didn't work at all, but that's my bad for not having the technical proficiency to install it with a NetWrapper.

I would suggest getting one that works out of the box. It is 11$.
If you are dead set on getting yours to work there are a few ways:
