1) Fight sticks. you do not need a fight stick to play street fighter nor do you need one to be good players like SonicFox and Luffy play on playstation controllers, theres no inherent advantage besides a few input techniques and in some cases a stick can give the game a rewarding feel or the game to "click in your head"
Maxalillion goes into this quite in depth i recommend you watch his video on the mater to further your opinion on the matter.
I've been recomending Fightsticks for alot for people on reddit when these threads come up and with friends in person and i have to say due to feed back though you may not want to spend upwards $200-$300 on a stick but sticks in this range particularly the Hori mini4 and Mad catz alpha though built well for beginners will be uncomfortabel to use or leave you longing for more. i would only recommend those sticks if you want you kids to play with you and not on your big daddy stick or you are deathly on the edge or very skeptikal on buying a stick. if you are trying to be a little serious and maybe want to attend arcades it is better to get a higher end stick as they last longer, preform a little better and will be a bit comfortable to use. i personally recommend the Hori Rap4 Kai as it is very high quality and the cheapest one the mad catz TES+( is just as good but more expensive (its the same price right now thats a steal!) And the best of both worlds is the sony venom around 86 us with the conversion and bought on the amazon.uk site very good stick and is easy to mod when you are ready. these sticks are worth the cash if you are serious. Think this through as geting an arcade stick will slightly complicate the learning process of learning a new fighting game especially coming from a game quite different like smash brothers. i personally recommend going to your locals area and see if they have a SFV scene and ask some of the guys there to let you try out their stick or teach you some stuff heres a video on what you will actually be probably using a stick
2)Since you tell me you have come from smash you know fighting games. and you know they are hard to learn and hard to "git gud" so dont be afraid to lose, the best winners are the ones who learn from their loses. the first hurdle is understanding the game you are playing then the technical parts should slowly be introduced.
This is a good start
Vesper arcade (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql2OZoRrfos&list=PLIhWuF_5aE1_xHpDsJD1U2OgU4ZuAZrxp)
Gootecks has a very good series aswell i recomend you watch this second (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AomsfS_8cT8&list=PL13KoUNKKsK2HQ_nWMR9wUqtwrA8k317I)
As for picking your main for a character you want to play. find someone who is fun and who you like regardless of strength. The Capcom character guides are a good place to see what a characters capable of and a little bit about their strengths and weaknesses for a better under standing (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs4LjNCY15zMKfPmf5M5_Ow9en17ur3BR) a youtuber under the name TrueUnderDogGaming has a similar line of videos (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHXrezoc98F7jiQIPgeA9655yxUhRPI4x)
you said you like rashid SF has some insightful videos though they are for the micro complexities for the game they are short and helpful to understanding the game, did i mention he loves rashid hes also not a super duper good player so you will have an easy time relating and understanding him (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3f9nd40434_EJ-CkvC9pmzD6s0exYuaD)
on the sub reddit we also have pages dedicated to characters i recommend you check them out (https://www.reddit.com/r/StreetFighter/wiki/index)
like i said play who you want, but at the early stages there are soe chaaracters that are difficult to use, will impeed progress with complicated mechanics and play styles and worst case senario bad habits. if i were you i would consider giving THIS a glance before you make any final decisions
Another good resource to learn the game and im surprised it isnt praised and recommended to beginners is the street fighter V Collectors edition Guide book. it explains street fighter on a very basic level of understanding, explains some very general and important fighting game topics and lingo such as footsies and meaties. it also provides you with Frame data something very important later on in learning street fighter. i 10/10 recommend wish i had something like this when i started 2 years ago you can buy it at amazon.com
And the last place for help is our own sub reddit! you have any questions please come here everyone will help you out!
All the lingo, terminology and explanations so you can talk the talk on the reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/stReetfighter/wiki/iv/glossary

we also have a beginners guide here too https://www.reddit.com/r/stReetfighter/wiki/v/new_player_guide
just like smash (i did try learning smash) one of the first few things to do is get used to your stick and movement so just play the story and all the single player content we have "so far" and have fun! and welcome to the community. Fight well,Fight hard, Never give up and remember to... #RISE UP
Alright based on your answers and the stuff available on amazon.co.uk my suggestions would be:
It is cheap (65£, free delivery), but unlike the HORI Fightstick Mini, or the MadCatz Fightstick Alpha it has the size of a proper fightstick (though it is on the smaller side of things when compared to behemoths like the Razer Panthera, or the QanBa Dragon), actually it being a bit smaller makes it a good travel stick to take to offline events with you. It also is build like a tank. It weights at least 2kg, and is made out of thick plastic and metal, so you don't have to worry if you drop it once or twice by accident, or vent your anger over that stupid DP-mashing Ken in Ranked. Also because it is so sturdy it sits very well on your lap or the table (it practically doesn't move no matter how much you are churning the butter as Zangief). It is also lends itself very well to customization. All you have to do is unscrew the bottom plate and you have access to all the parts inside of it and you also can take off the plexi on top of it really easily as it is only held in place by six magnets (imo, changing the artwork on a Venom is as easy as it can get, unlike some other pricier fightsticks, I'm looking at you Razer Panthera).
The only negative aspect of this stick are the actual parts used in it. The stick-unit itself is actually halfway decent, a little bit more stiff than a Sanwa JLF unit (the most commonly used for playing FGs), but it is still good, especially for beginners. The buttons on the other hand are quite bad, they are ok for your first couple of weeks or months learning to play on a stick, but afterwards you probably want to replace them with genuine Sanwa, Seimitsu, or HORI parts (which, as explained above, is pretty easy and doesn't take any soldering whatsoever). So in the end you get a brilliant beginner stick, that will last you for ages, is really good for traveling with and customizing. The only downside is, that you will probably have to spend another ~16-40£ on genuine Sanwa parts down the line (making the whole stick cost somewhere between 82£ and 105£ after modding it).
Now this is where we get into the realm of sticks aimed at enthusiasts and serious players. At 91.71£ the RAP 4 Kai is probably your cheapest option to get a really good, brand new stick where you will have to do little to nothing to get the best experience out of it. It is build very sturdily, except for the cable-compartment cover, which a lot of people claim to be very flimsy on all HORI sticks. Though, I think most of these people are just morons who don't know how to handle their belongings with proper care, as I haven't managed to break the cover on my HORI RAP 5 that I used while staying in Japan, despite using it pretty much every day and taking it to several offline events with me. It has HORI's own Hayabusa Stick and depending on the model, KURO or Hayabusa buttons. They are very good hardware, though some people still prefer to to mod their stick with Sanwa parts, but I honestly think that is just down to preference as both HORI and Sanwa parts preform exceptionally well (FYI most of the arcade cabinets in Japan's Taito-station chain of arcades use Hayabusa Sticks and Kuro buttons right now, instead of Sanwa JLF sticks and OBSF buttons). If you do want to change the parts of the stick the procedure to do so is pretty much the same as with the Venom, though, you won't be able to customize the artwork on the RAP 4 Kai as easily because it actually does not have a plexi-cover on its top side at all, instead the artwork is a sticker glued onto the actual case. Overall this is you safest bet at getting a complete, top-level fightstick in the UK. The models I mention next are pretty much overpriced versions of the Kai with some quality of life improvements aimed at people who are really into fighting games and are ok with spending a lot of money on their stick.
Both of these sticks are great. Both of them have genuine arcade parts in them (Panthera has Sanwa parts, VLX has HORI Hayabusa/Kuro parts). Both of them are really great when it comes to customizing/maintenance. Just flip open the top-part of the stick and you get to the insides without even unscrewing things. Both of them are also build like absolute tanks. Sturdy plastic, really heavy. But, both of them are terrible when it comes to customizing your stick with custom artwork and both are insanely overpriced (199.99£ for the Panthera and 259.99£ for the VLX), so if you do not think that you are in for the long haul with fighting games, don't waste your money on things that are just marginally better than the two recommendations mentioned before but cost twice or even four times as much.
With that being said I do want to warn you. Getting a fight-stick after playing for some time with a pad is a commitment to relearning a lot of the things you have learned thus far with little to no benefit when it comes to comfort, in some cases even a decrease in comfort (dashing on a stick is mostly considered to be more strenuous and doing advanced movements like Korean backdashing in 3D fighting games is a nightmare on stick compared to pad). At this point in time fighting games are usually created with pad players in mind so the controls on a pad are usually laid out in a very ergonomic way (and if they still don't fit you, you can remap buttons easily to fit your preference). These days using a stick does not really have any tangible benefits to using a pad, other than it looks cooler and is considered by some to be the "true way of playing fighting games". This can be proven easily by looking at the top SFV players right now, out of the current Top 32 players in CPT eight use a pad to play and two of them are currently ranked 1st and 3rd respectively on the global leader-board (though, Punk does use stick from time to time).
There are really only three reasons to build a stick, and short-term cost isn't one of them:
Because of the first two reasons, a custom stick can be a great long-term investment, since a new PCB is much, much cheaper than a new high-quality stick.
In the short-term though, it costs as much as a high end stick, especially if your case is all-metal or other high cost solutions.
In your case I would recommend the new Mayflash sticks, like this one or something like the Qanba Drone.
Both sticks you could upgrade with a little work, but are in any case good starter sticks. You might find them a little small or too light, and the parts aren't the highest quality, but it's probably best to start with one of these sub $100 options, then if you are enjoying stick a lot, move to a high end sanwa stick for ~$250.
Ok first off hi! I'm beatlemnkyhuman a.k.a Jesus nice to meet you.
You don't need a stick
It's a luxury. Sticks are pricey and custom sticks can get really pricey. I've heard of players buying sticks and never using them so some buy them just for the swag but it is no longer needed.
Luffy won evo and went pro with a ps1 pad and he still uses a ps1 pad.
Punk went pro on pad, nuckledu is pro on pad coolkid plays pad.
you no longer need a stick
A stick will not make you better.
Contrary to popular belief a stick is not magic.
You will still have to work. In my personal experience, it took me 3 months or so to get over pad and get used to stick. If you did not grow up with a stick then there's no reason.
Next thing, if you did grow up with a stick then your memory maybe rose tinted in that your remembering being better then you ever were. Sticks take work just like pad.
If after all this you still want a stick:
I recommend focus attack for custom art work and big e customs for custom designs as that's what I use
[the te2 is the pro standard. Amazing stick, easy to mod. Sanwa buttons and sanwa stick.] (https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018AW405K/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543512575&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=madcatz+te2%2B&dpPl=1&dpID=41vrhKHqO9L&ref=plSrch)
some players prefer the hori rap4 with hori parts. It's cheaper so the stick is a little more loose. Hori parts fully and difficult to mod
the qanba drone is seen as a cheap alternative. Sanwa buttons i think and if not it can be modded easily. Known to not last
The qanba dragon is a monster of a stick that goes for 300 and the obsidian goes for 200.
EDIT: The razr panthera is a pro favorite as well, impossible to mod the artwork but an amazing stick for 200
If you want to go custom from the ground up then you can do allfightsticks. Com which will give you a sleek heavy steel frame or marvelous customs.
Each of those custom sticks will run you 300 plus.
You can even go wood frame which may be even more expensive.
Good luck.
I think everyone's pretty united on this: you don't need a stick to be good at fighting games or to get the whole experience. I'm a kb/m guy who's been playing PC for over 20 years so controllers feel weird to me. I got a stick the day after I picked up SFV and decided to get serious about it. No handheld controller was going to work for me. I also remember having issues with blisters on my thumb and the like that I didn't want to get into again (this was back in Alpha 3). Hence the choice for a stick.
The first stick I got was this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NOAWLBE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't know where you're from but either this brand (Mayflash) or an equivalent will be available. It's moddable, easily, and the construction is very good. Quality stuff. Art is replaceable as the plexiglass top is only held in by some magnets. This thing was built as an awesome first stick with great customization options. The alternative one is this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-PlayStation-Licensed-8-Button-Arcade/dp/B00NHDSINS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468837173&sr=8-1&keywords=licensed+stick
They're the same thing but I don't know if the bottom one works on PC. The Mayflash one definitely does. Same chassis, much the same internals but compatibility might be slightly different.
I have since moved on to a Hori RAP4 Kai:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RZ7T8N6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Again, using that on PC with no issues. Just need to drop x360ce into the SFV folder and run it once to detect the stick. Works like a dream from that point forward. If I ever buy a PS4 I know it'll work fine as well.
Hope this was helpful :)
The Mayflash V2 is literally the exact same stick, but half the price (or $25 less if you get it from the Amazon UK site through BaconGlock's method) and minus the PS4 compatibility. Feels great as is, and is super easy to mod. Shipping is cheap, too, cause Amazon is awesome.
Although, it is 360/PS3 compatible, so if all you need it for is Street Fighter, it should work just as fine on SFV on PC (because it has X-Input support) or PS4 (because I'm sure PS3 sticks are backwards compatible with SFV, right?).
EDIT: Also heads up, /r/Fighters or the FAQ/General Hardware Topic on this sub are probably better places to ask stick questions, since mods tend to delete general hardware question topics.
ok so first of all, please don't complain about Laura when you just admitted you are still learning the basics of the genre. I know losing in SF can be frustrating as hell but saying stuff like that in a post asking for basic gameplay strategies is likely to piss off many FGC vets and stop them from replying with advice.
Having said that I suggest Gootecks' book, Simplifying Street Fighter. He focuses on Ryu but explains many important basic mechanics, strategies and other concepts of the SF series.
I would also recommend adjusting your approach a little bit... Another reason the guides you commonly see are written the way they are is because in a real world match there are a million factors that can and should influence the decisions you make. People don't want to fall into a strict mindset of "if this happens, mix them up like this" because it is predictable. You should be reacting to your opponent and deciding what to do based on what you've learned about your opponent's play style, as well as the current situation, not following a strict plan (The popular ken flow chart makes fun of this concept).
I know it isn't easy but really the best way is to just practice, and watch pro matches. There's no magic trick to just easily explain what to do in every situation. So when guides say "this is a good poke" or "this is a good mixup" and they leave it to you to decide when and how exactly to use that tech, it is not because they don't want to be helpful to newbies, but rather because they recognize it would be impossible/impractical to give those details for every situation (or even a majority of them). Note that I am not great at this game by any means this is just my take on it. Hope this made sense and good luck.
Fighting games have very high learning curves, but they are extremely rewarding.
I suggest PC if you can run it.
I recommend you take a look @ some of these:

Fightsticks are not neccesary and will not make you good. BUT they are very fun to use and some aspects are easier IMO.

> no problem, i also played melee for about a year and then transitioned to this game, this is my first sf game. I love melee but i can honestly say i haven't looked back
buy a fight commander 4, aside the default ps4 controller imo its the best pad to play on, good features , good quality and the 6 button layout is perfect for SF games. also the controller is not TOO expensive
https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468827278&sr=8-2&keywords=hori+fighting+commander
heres a less feature filled on, but equally good
https://www.amazon.com/PS4-PS3-compatible-Fighting-commander-14210671/dp/B017QORK8W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468827278&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+fighting+commander
If you want a quick lowdown on whats not on the cheaper model is, its missing the repositional d-pad as well as the dpad diagonal sensitivity adjuster (this helps for more rigid controls or looser controls for easier circular motions). The shape is also slightly different but thats not a biggy :)
Welcome to the community! A good place to start, although the tutorial takes place on an older version of the game, is the VesperArcade tutorials
This links to Chapter 5, where he'll get into just about where you are knowledge wise. They're pretty long but they cover everything you need to know in terms of what people will be doing in matches.
After that, as mentioned below Gootecks' book is a really great read for learning the basics of Street Fighter gameplay. Link to the book! There's a free trial for Kindle Unlimited so you'd be able to read it for free.
It's not a long book by any means, so you'll be able to finish it and study it thoroughly by the time the trial ends. Have fun!
well then theres the Venom arcade-stick. dunno about availability in US, but hes pretty popular in europe. a friend of mine has one and hes more than happy with it.
i'd probably save 50$ more though and go for a HRAP4 if i were you.
the qanba-sticks are popular, too
Let me preface this with saying I think you should just get a PS4 controller because it's best at that price range. That being said, I can kind of see why maybe you'd want to get a cheap stick. Maybe you aren't sure you really wanna use one, so don't want to commit $200 and you'd like to try it first, which seems relatively reasonable.
You won't find one for less than $50 though, but for $55 there's https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-F300-Arcade-Joystick-Switch/dp/B019MFPLC0?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1 which at least exists. It isn't going to be great, but it's at least an arcade stick and even though it isn't high quality or anything it's going to feel like any other stick from the standpoint of the layout. So if you've never used a stick and just want to try one to see if you like it I think that's probably the best you can do.
Again though, I think just use a pad, there's nothing wrong with it, they work for other games as well, and it's cheaper and wireless.
I've only really had experience with a couple of Hori sticks and the latest Madcatz te, as well as some custom ones I modded. You have a lot more options on PC, but as for quality I'm not really sure. I know there are some Qanba PC sticks for around $80, but I can't vouch for the quality, although the ratings are pretty good on [Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BXPIO1S/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_YWr7wbJ230K0F)
The buttons and stick might not be of the greatest quality, but it's a good start and I assume some of the high ratings come from being [easy to mod] (https://youtu.be/FllbddE4zes) but for that you'd need to buy new buttons and new stick.
If I were in your position, I'd opt for getting something of decent quality now with the intent to mod it later when you really get a feel for using a stick and get your execution down. And if I didn't want to mod, I'd wait a bit longer or mow a couple lawns and opt for a nice [Hori] [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SULMRI4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_y8r7wb9MQ71NQ) or a better quality [Qanba] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007SGGLZW/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_39r7wb7K0TS7Y)
Either way, there's still a learning curve when switching peripherals so keep that in mind
For anyone looking for a ps4 pad to play with or use for dual modding, the Hori FC4 is down to 35 bucks on amazon: Link.

I guess that even though the post was getting upvotes, as it is a thing one needs to play Street Fighter games at a price that people would surely like to know about, the mods determined it be relegated to the daily thread where it may fall through the cracks for some readers. Ah well. Hopefully anyone interested in a useful deal will happen to see this in the next eleven hours.
Hope the mods will consider allowing people to post peripheral deals in the future, as I don't think they come by often enough to clog the main feed. Just my opinion, of course.
I can vouch for number 4), as I'm still always mashing my stick to the end of the gate. Definitely practice realizing that you do not have to mash the stick all the way till it stops.
Also I would invest in buying an octa-gate from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sanwa-GT-Y-Octagonal-Restrictor-Joysticks/dp/B004AU0H4U). Its a preference thing, but it helps me when playing with Ryu and needing to get off a dp quickly. The madcatz TE sticks are nice cause you can just push the button to open the top and switch out the gate in all of about 15 secs.
I was also perplexed at first by the convex buttons, but they are second nature now, and I think I prefer them over the bowl shaped ones, but like others have said. These are easy to replace if you want something different.
Good Luck and stick with it!
It sounds like you're uncertain about the fundamentals. The basis you need to understand why you lose, and how to go about improving.
Check out Gootecks' video series, The Fighting Game Primer (free), and/or maybe Gootecks' Fighting Game Fundamentals ($5, but more SFV oriented).
Laura is a tough character, just because your character is a 'rushdown' style character doesn't mean you can just run at your opponent and win. Learning how to do the mix-ups, and other rush-down esque tech will not be enough to win. You need have very good neutral in order to get in and begin your 'rushdown', that means having the a lot of patience, strong defense, and being able to identify and capitalize on holes in your opponent's defense.
Queueing up match after match and not actively reviewing your own matches is an extremely slow way to improve. You have to identify what's wrong with how you're playing, and having the knowledge from the resources above will help you do this.
Those extra 2 buttons are for all punches and all kicks. You don't actually need them, as you can press all three buttons at once instead, but if you find that difficult to do, those buttons are useful for that.
You can also map other things to those buttons, like throws or whatever, if you want.
Honestly, learning to play with just 6 buttons from the get-go is pretty neat.
My only gripe with that stick is the size and weight of it. You'll want it to rest firmly on your lap/desk when you play. It should never ever move when you do sudden inputs.
I have this arcade stick, and the only gripe I had with that was the Kuro buttons on it, which I have switched out with Sanwa buttons. I recommend it, but know that it will take you a while to get used to a stick. You'll suck for days if not weeks.
I don't have that but I just got the version previous to that and one thing to realize is that if you've already been playing with the PS4 controller for a bit you're muscle memory is going to be thrown off a ton. You will be worse before you're better.
I'm starting to get used to it now and starting to realize the pros. It has a better d-pad I can use more accurately, better button layout for fighters with all 6 buttons up front and the right triggers make for easy EX/V-reversals, and overall more comfortable. I prefer using it but I wouldn't say I'm appreciably better at the game having it.
As far as prices on the Amazon US go:
The Hori Fighting Commander 4 has universally positive reviews, is compatible with PS4, and now it's discounted to $30.
The Qanba Q1 is a very good budget choice for sticks, costs $80, proprietary but good quality parts (can be modded later), and is compatible with PS4 SFV in legacy mode.
For higher-end, there is the Hori RAP 4 for $150, PS4 compatibility, quality Hori stick and buttons, pretty much the best you can get ($200 on MadCatz TE2 is not worth)
Or you could try the used route, I bet there are many people selling their old but good sticks on eBay because of PS4.
So, I'm going to be trying to get into the game and having been looking into picking up a Hori Real Arcade Pro (Unless there's a better choice around that price range). I'm going to be playing on PC and was just wondering how setting that up with the drivers and everything will be. I'm really excited to be joining the SF community, I've always watched with interest from the Smash Bros side of venues and figured now would be a good time to bridge the gap and try it out! I'm also lucky to have a few friends who are willing to teach me the game and hopefully be practice partners as I learn the ins-and-outs of true 2D fighters.
I'm looking for a stick to play UMvC3 and SFV on PC. This mayflash stick is pretty cheap and is the amazon recommended one, but my buddies who play the games recommend this hori one. I've used the xbox/pc version of the stick that my buds recommend and I really like it, but I want to know if it's worth it. Any suggestions?
No stick is fine, especially for SFV, since it is very forgiving. I'm a Gief/Guile main that started on SNES/arcades, and use a pad because the 360 motions are easier for me. I've used a Hori Fighting Commander for two years now and it's held up well. It feels a little cheap (especially the shoulder buttons), but the d-pad is smooth and responsive and 360s/720s are a piece of cake. Assuming you are on PC, I think this one should work:
https://www.amazon.com/PS4-PS3-compatible-Fighting-commander-14210711/dp/B017QORK8W/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=hori+fighting+commander&qid=1570026106&sr=8-3
Maybe once every couple years, they go on sale for $19.99 at Amazon, but anything under $40 is a good price. If you've ever used a SNES or Japanese Saturn pad, it's a good choice that will be easy to get used to.
I have about 300 hours in this one:
https://www.amazon.com/PS4-PS3-compatible-Fighting-commander-14210711/dp/B017QORK8W
I've heard about plenty of issues with the Hori FC4, but not so much the Hori FC for PS4. Works great for both PC and PS4 (if you play PC but want to go to tourneys on PS4). I play Zangief and the Dpad has been churned hard but still works fine (it was stiff to start with). I pulled it apart to clean once and no issues since.
9.5/10 would recommend.
I've seen some real lab monsters hitting awesome combos and fail their BnB's online. My brother in law is like that.
In his particular case it's because he tenses up and tries to mash the fireball out if that makes any sense. Like to input it way faster than actually needed (and hitting the button too soon at it) because of how much his mind is in stress mode. Specially against gimmicky characters, even before they actually try their gimmicks.
The good news is: for online matches you can do the input analysis, too! He knew he tensed all up, but it was not until I showed him his replays with input display on that he really understood it.
---------
So my suggestion to you is this: Go to the replay of that last match that made it so obvious to you that you came here asking for help. We need that very match. Enable input display for your character and PAUSE at the moment you dropped that move/combo that was like "the last drop" before you decided to come here. I bet one "simplifying street fighter"-ebook with you that whatever you do wrong, it clearly shows there. And through the entire match it is very likely to repeat in the same pattern (like always the button too soon, always doing hadouken without crouching-forward, etc). That will tell you what to remember and what to train first.
It's not intuitive to stay calm when rushed down, granted. But it is usually what helps get you out. Also I never said it is easy. :P
A great starter stick is the Venom although it probably depends where you live as to whether its cheap or not (i live in the UK so it works out about £70).
Still a big commitment financially but not the £200+ of the Madcatz sticks. Its a good quality stick and very easy to mod. Recebtly changed the buttons with ease and id never modded a stick before. The artwork on top of the stick is just paper that can be replaced so over time you can make changes to it if thats what you want.
In my opinion, the Madcatz TES+ is a great stick to get because it constantly goes on sale, is relatively easy to mod, but most importantly, has Sanwa parts already.
Originally released at $200, I got mine for $80 free shipping many months ago during a Newegg sale, and it has since gone on sale again for $100-$130 on different retailers. You just plug in and play; no need for driver installation. I have had no issues at all after about 200 hours of use.
For a beginner fighstick, and as someone who wanted Sanwa parts without having to mod a flimsy $50 entry level stick, I think this was a solid, solid choice of fightstick, which I can take to a local by just putting it in my backpack.
Fighting games are inherently competitive. I don't understand why someone would buy a fighting game for the single player. There are much more interesting single player games.
The execution in this game is silly easy. You should not be expecting results if you can only play for 30 minutes every few days. If you could play that little and not get destroyed it would denigrate the integrity of the game.
If you could spend 30 minutes playing every few days and add in 30 minutes to an hour each week of watching youtube videos or reading guides I think you would see improvement.
I would suggest reading Simplifying Streetfighter, by gooteks, if you can spare $5: https://www.amazon.com/Simplifying-Street-Fighter-Players-Preparing-ebook/dp/B015KLJCJI
It would give you a very effective crash course on fighting games. I would also take a look at Bafael's BnB guides: https://www.reddit.com/r/StreetFighter/comments/465d20/bafaels_bread_and_butter_combos_for_13_characters/
You can get better at this game by playing 30 minutes every few days, but it will take a long time. If you add in some extra curricular stuff your playtime will be much more productive (and will be more fun). Good luck.
I've got the ps3 Madcatz SFxTekken fight pad which works really well, but it's pretty expensive on Amazon now. Haven't used it before, but this HORI pad is great for the price. I'm looking to get a fightstick eventually, but my pad will have to do for now. I was so excited when I found out SFV lets you use ps3 peripherals, it feels much better than the ps4 controller
Grab a Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai -
https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Real-Arcade-Pro-Kai-PlayStation/dp/B00SULMRI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485751635&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+arcade+stick
Compatible with PS3 / PS4 / PC. Should be around ~$220 delivered. The only difference between this and a (far more expensive) MadCatz stick is it uses Hori's 'Hayabusa' buttons/stick, which feel slightly different to the Sanwa buttons/stick used by MadCatz. Purists will tell you 'Sanwa or nothing', but I can tell you honestly from 7 years of playing SF4 using Sanwa sticks to using this Hori stick for SF5, the difference is negligible. The good thing is you can easily swap the stick and buttons out for Sanwa parts if you really, really must have a Sanwa setup.
Would recommend 100%.
ok this is just if you want to go to offline events and play in tourney:
https://www.amazon.com/Joystick-PlayStation-Fighting-Officially-Licensed-4/dp/B01I0GEDEY hands down best option.
dont get the mayflash its awful. other cheaper options are hori kai, or possibly a good deal on a mad catz TES+ for playing on PS4.
if you want to only ever play on PC, look for an XBOX 360 fightstick. i cant see what is for sale in UK but if you look online you can definitely find one for a good deal and they are much better than any of the new ps4 sticks by a long shot. will last you for life ive had my madcatz and hori for 8 years
I'm looking for a fightpad for the PS4. The Dualshock 4 is great, but I think six face buttons would really improve my game, as I sometimes find using the bumpers and the triggers a bit confusing.
It seems that there are two options:
Hori Fighting Commander
Mad Catz Fightpad Pro
The Hori has gotten great reviews and it looks amazing (my first SF experiences were on the Sega Genesis, so I love the design), but I've heard that the d-pad breaks after a short period of time. I also would have to import it from Japan, which isn't that convenient.
The Mad Catz, on the other hand, has gotten very negative reviews, but the one I'm interested in is the new improved version. The revised fightpad seems to be well received, but there's not much information about it. And many people online seem to say that everything Mad Catz does, besides the sticks, is garbage.
So, any opinions / experiences on either of these?
When my friends come over to play we use my xbox one controllers which you can either buy the charge and play cable for it to work immediately or the wireless PC adapter to go with it so you can have multiple controllers if you wants friends over playing. I've heard the PS4 controller works now but have not tested it myself. There is also a Hori gamepad that some people love and I've seen recommended on here
Link: https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Commander-PlayStation-Officially-Licensed-4/dp/B01GVOFIAA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468939059&sr=8-2&keywords=hori+gamepad
there's no such thing as a "beginner" stick. you just need to get one that uses decent parts like sanwa. unfortunately that means you will have to spend more but I recommend Hori
if you're really strapped for cash try this stick and then mod it later with sanwa parts
also playing on pad is perfectly viable, even more so for SFV. so don't feel like you need to get one unless you have aspirations to go to japan one day and play against the arcade heads
The Venom posted below is alright if you're not sure, but most people will tell you to upgrade to Sanwa parts anyway, which creates a false economy. Unfortunately, in the UK we're actually pretty limited in terms of fight sticks available for purchase (for reasonable amounts of money).
I bought my RAP4 for about £120 and it's got a decent amount of heft, so it won't shift around like a Mayflash. Adjusting from pad to stick took a bit of getting used to (you'll get worse before you get better!) but it does save a lot of strain on your thumbs and IMO certain actions become way easier to pull off.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PS4-Real-Arcade-Pro-Kai-x/dp/B00RZ7T8N6/
As far as the other discussion of Sanwa vs Hori goes, I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I've used both and prefer Hori, but I can't say that my performance would be affected if I had to play on anything else.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/HORI-Arcade-Hayabusa-Fight-Stick/dp/B07895D3XF/
This is pretty much the same thing as the RAP4, but I think the layout is *slightly different. Around about the same on Amazon Prime though.
There's a new version out too, I've had it for like a week and it's pretty good. I'm kinda new to street fighter and played with a xbox360 controller before, this certainly feels better.
http://www.amazon.com/PS4-PS3-compatible-Fighting-commander-14210671/dp/B017QORK8W/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1457922760&sr=1-1&keywords=hori+fighting+commander
I owned that pad, and didn't like it. The completely circle dad made it impossible for me to use (no tactile feedback of thumb location) they since made a new version that has a cross, so if you buy I definitely recommend that one.
However I prefer the Hori FC4 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01GVOFIAA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485298348&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=hori+fighting it just feels better in my hands, the madcaz is too angular for me.
You sacrifice an analog stick (IMO something only giefs really care about) and the top buttons are a bit muddier, but they're more comfortable and I rarely use them. The big bonus is the price difference, it's way cheaper than even a dual shock.
Practice and take breaks often. Your brain needs time to digest what it just learned. With time, it'll come naturally. I like to compare it to MMO's in a way. The same way you would grind for gear or whatever, you grind your combos until your really proficient at it. Eventually you'll get so good that even new characters will be a quick learning experience (execution wise, not footsie wise).
Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it on a controller. I can name like 10 pro's of the top of my head that prove that wrong.
I do however, recommend a controller with all the buttons on the face like this one
But it's not necessary. Use whatever you're comfortable with.
I absolutely adore my Hori Fighting Commander 4. Incredible pad. Lots of nifty features, PS4/PS3 compatible as well as PC, works out of the box, nice dpad, good buttons, all around solid and priced rather fairly.
i've heard nothing but good things about the hori real arcade pro 4 kai (EU139.39) (link below).
i did the same and learned with a hori fight stick mini which was an awesome experience, although awkward to get used to the position at first, still using it to this day but got a pro 4 kai on the way.
the mini fight stick did require some 3rd party software (joy2key) to run, but very easy to set up, and very responsive.
hope this helps!

One other resource that you might not find mentioned a lot. Gootecks, one of the more well known players and a community leader for street fighter, founder of Cross Counter TV, actually wrote a book about getting into SFV. I was lucky enough to get it when he had it up for free on launch day, but even now it's only $5 or free to borrow with kindle unlimited. It teaches you some important fundamentals, the differences between USF4 and SF5, and even how to read frame data to construct your own blockstrings, frame traps, and combos. If book learning is your thing, check it out.

Good point, It's a Madcatz 6 button stick. Looks exactly like this one but has 6 buttons and 2 black caps over the last two buttons. Almost as if you can actually install buttons there but like the post says, Im not sure and im pretty new to fighter sticks in general.

I've had it for about a year and half and it's working as good as the day I got it. Pretty solid stick if you want a nice one but don't want to regret it later haha

I will say that, minus Falke seeing requires remapping for a pad, nobody really needs a stick.
This Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai keeps dropping in price on Amazon. It did it the other day and made it down to like 113 bucks or something, so keep your eye on it for a bit. I think it is pretty well regarded as a good stick, others may have more input than me.
I'm in the same situation as you, coming from playing smash 4 competitively for almost a year now and wanted to try SF5. I would recommend either getting the Hori Fighting Commander 4, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GVOFIAA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_soNkzbF5WZWMH or the Qanba Drone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I0GEDEY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hpNkzbN42VHVE
I personally recently purchased the Qanba Drone due to a fighstick being much easier and healthier for my hands and wanting a fighstick as I've heard of how helpful they can be for execution. I at first was going to get a fighting commander 4, and would suggest that if you think you'd prefer pad, but my personal recommendation is a Qanba Drone. It's a bit pricier but it's a quite good stick for the price and can be modded in the future if you decide you really like stick.
I've never played with a PS3 or PS4 pad, but I'd recommend looking into the Hori Fighting Commander 4 as a fantastic value for $30 if you're only looking for a fighting game controller and don't need the analog sticks for other games. Setting it up to work on PC is very easy with x360ce.
You can just purchase a cheaper stick and mod it in the future. The Mayflash Stick is $40 and can be modded with Sanwa parts. The Venom Stick can be had for like $70 if you can find it and actually can be modded to be VERY good looking and with all the good parts. As mentioned in the other replies, the Hori sticks are constantly on sale as well both at stores and locally I'm sure. I always see them on Kijiji.
Yet ANOTHER alternative is a converter. The Brooke PS3 to PS4 Converter is restocked very frequently. Focus attack should be getting them soon as their stocks are likely just depleted from their holiday sale. This thing costs you $35 bucks and should have no lag issues from everything written about them on Shoryuken.
You can even buy a new PCB and dual mod your stick to work on whatever you want. Lots of solutions for you. You dont need to spend $200, especially if you already have a stick.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SULMRI4/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1426440508&sr=8-2&keywords=hori+v4&pi=AC_SY200_QL40
Looks like Amazon still has this one in stock. I just picked it up last week and I'm happy with it - it's an improvement over my v3 Kai. I have been experiencing an issue playing on PC where it doesn't work unless I unplug the USB cable and plug it back in again, which is a minor annoyance. I haven't looked into a fix yet.
I got this from a recommendation when I asked reddit, it's a great stick. I haven't had a single issue with it; it's worked perfectly.
The qanba drone is $90 and has been getting pretty solid reviews, seems like a good choice for a starter stick https://www.amazon.com/Drone-PS4-PS3-Arcade-Joystick/dp/B01I0GEDEY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469127058&sr=8-1&keywords=qanba+drone#customerReviews
I use this one : the Hori FC4 Pro
https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8
I've been using it for almost 2 years now, and it is just beginning to show some signs of fatigue. So I bought another one. I just love this pad
I must note that I play Gief, both in SF5 and SF4 and that I am quite a butter churner (I killed a brand new Hori wireless Tekken5 stick in 2 days, a PDP MKX fightpad in a month, a madcatz SfxT in 2 weeks) :p
I never had problems with the rotating d-pad, nor the sensitivity switch (though I locked both as I wanted them day1, and never unlocked them since, so that may be why).
What I really like about this pad is the sensitivity setting and the 6 + 4 buttons. Of course you can only map 8 buttons in game, but then I have my 6 face buttons for LP/MP/HP and LK/MK/HK, on the left triggers I have PPP (lariat) and KKK (V-reversal) and on the right triggers HP and HK that I use only to activate Vtrigger. This makes it much easier to do things like c.LP os V-Trigger
Can't find the hardware thread so
First off lemme say that no one I know is dropping $120+ on something for little ol' me.
But if someone will spend a little less and then I can plunk some better buttons in there, that sounds great to me. I'm looking at these 4 options right now:
https://www.amazon.com/Qanba-Controller-Fight-Stick-Drone-PS4/dp/B01I0GEDEY/
https://www.amazon.com/Carbon-PlayStation-Android-X-Input-D-Input-Joystick/dp/B01HSQE7IY/
https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-Arcade-Fightstick-Joystick-F300/dp/B019MFPLC0/
https://www.amazon.com/Qanba-Q1-PS3-Joystick-Fightstick/dp/B00BXPIO1S/
Doesn anyone have any experience with these out of the box and after modding? Any issues? I will also be using this to play GG and possibly BB if that makes any difference.
I have no idea on that one. But if it doesnt ship there and you're in the UK I heard this stick is good for the price point:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-PlayStation-Licensed-8-Button-Arcade/dp/B00NHDSINS
Its actually got pretty great reviwes, 4.5 stars
(new player)
I play SFV on PC with a dualshock 3. I like the controller but the D-pad hurts my thumb so I use my t-shirt to do my movements more smoothly.
I wanted to know if there's an accessory like this kind of D-pad that I can add above my PS3 or PS4 controller.
Otherwise, do you recommand this model ?
My priority is to get a smooth d-pad, precise of course, but not something that burns my thumb like the dualshock 3.
Thank you.

So I've recently bought SFV. I haven't honestly played a Fighting game such as SFV in a long time, about a decade actually.
I was looking to get a stick for it, but since I'm still a student (College is living money hell), I want to get a budget one.
This one in particular has been interesting me
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Stick-Mini-PlayStation-4/dp/B014KXMEW4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I don't want to go above $50 and this one will serve as practice and a bridge to upgrading to a more quality one in the future. I just want something to practice with.
I hate the feel of my Xbox360 controller with SFV. Dashing and doing just combos in general is really hard for me. My thumb slip off the directional stick many times while I'm playing trying to execute combos on even training dummies.
What would you guys recommend for me? Any other budget friendly sticks?
Cheapest and quickest answer I can think of is to get a Venom stick.
https://www.amazon.com/Venom-Arcade-Stick-Sony-Playstation-4/dp/B00NHDSINS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469130371&sr=8-1&keywords=venom+ps4+stick
The stock stick and buttons are surprisingly good for the price (although I did change them out for Sanwa parts that I already had in another stick for old formats).
This allows you to play on PS4, PC and PS3 out of the box. No messing, and easy to mod.
Officially Licensed Playstation Arcade Stick (PS4/PS3) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NHDSINS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_ORMMwbZB13STN
Granted it's very basic but it's a great stick to start with that will last you a long time till you move onto something else.
To anyone here who knows anything about building PS4 arcade sticks, I'm looking into building one. I hear taking apart a PS4 controller for the parts might be necessary. Is there a wired controller (3rd party or otherwise) that's known to be easy to take apart? So far, this looks like the most appropriate.
Same here. I use this because I heard about the d-pads and FC3 rotating after awhile.
The shoulder buttons can be very very sensitive which can work against you depending on who you are.
The d-pads and the buttons are initially very very stiff. I took to the controller like a duck to water honestly. Combos are a little easier, sometimes I find that I'm getting ahead of the inputs though.
Hey, with you providing great info before I thought to question you on this stick - Any thoughts? I assume with 3rd party software it would work on PC though could be wrong. Thanks :D
HORI RAP4 is going for $150 on Amazon these days, and is compatible with PC and PS4.
Link to the Amazon store.
This is the stick I own. I've got 300 hours into mine and it's still going strong. My only complaint is that it is kind of light-weight so it slides in my lap sometimes, and the door housing the power cord is only held on with two small plastic nubs that seem to break very easily. A rubber band keeps the cord together just fine for me now though.
EDIT : I also suggest trying the program ce360
as that may work to read the input from your already purchased fightstick? I suppose if your PC doesn't recognize the stick at all then it won't help.

I also got this and fitted a full Sanwa mod for an extra £40. There are plenty of guides and YouTube videos etc to help you out.
Works out £80-£100 cheaper than a TE. Personally I'm very happy with it.
IIRC a diamond ibuki player plays on keyboard so its not impossible.
My advice to you is to go into training mode and start practicing the motions. Quarter circle, Half circle, Z motion(Dp), etc etc until you feel comfortable doing them consistently. It will take time but eventually you will get it down.
But if you find it awkward still you can get a Hori pad for about $40 right now OR if stick is more of your thing you can get a Hori mini for about $40.
Remember that these will not make you any better at the game. It will take some time to get execution and timings down all while learning the basics of the game.
Cheers~
I have the HORI RAP4 Kai. It definitely does the job for me and is cheaper than the TE2. I did change out the buttons for Sanwas but I definitely didn't NEED to as the buttons it came with where fine.
Back to the original point....
The stick can be used on PC fine but you will need to use a 3rd party app like X360CE to map the buttons, alternatively if you are going to just use it on PC, you can buy any xbox 360 stick and it will work out the box.
The problem with the small ones is because they are so light they can just move around and dont give an acurate experience of the full size ones.
If you can stretch to it this Razer Atrox is a bargain at $80.00 as it comes with full sanwa parts the same as the TE2 sticks by Madcatz
I just pulled the trigger on the HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3:
http://www.amazon.ca/HORI-Real-Arcade-Pro-PlayStation/dp/B00SULMRI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453223414&sr=8-1&keywords=Hori+Real+Arcade+Pro+4
To top things off, Amazon offered me free trial Prime for 2-day shipping, so I should be getting this within 2 days or so.
Here's my rationale behind getting this stick:
Soon as this thing arrives, I will quickly pre-order SF V on Steam, and hopefully get beta access, and test this sucker.
Then I am assuming the stick is a 1.0 lol. I still have the stick in my closet. 7 years with the SF4 TE stick, and it finally died on me haha.
My current stick is http://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018AW408C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457390836&sr=8-1&keywords=TEs%2B and I am really enjoying it!
I used a MCZ SE for most of SF4 so upgraded to a Hori RAP4 for SFV, I love it, no issues so far, works great on PS4 and PC, parts are good (though I replaced the hayabusa joystick with a sanwa due to preference) and it's a reasonable price compared to the TEs.
Just a warning though, it has less room below the buttons for your hands, I personally like this, but for people who have used TEs it might seem restrictive
you can buy this and use your keyboard https://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-KeyMander-Keyboard-Adapter-GE1337P/dp/B00GBK434M
or buy a mixbox https://www.mixboxarcade.com/
or buy a second hand joystick
the cheapest i would go for a joystick is this https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Real-Arcade-Pro-PlayStation-4/dp/B00SULMRI4/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=rap%2B4%2Bjoystick&qid=1572109846&sr=8-1&th=1
The best and cheapest solution is a Dualshock 4 controller, give it a try i personally went from fightsticks back to controllers. If you really wanna get into fightsticks then choose one of these:
Really if you're looking for something entry level, you can give the Hori Mini a shot. It'll run you about $40 and gives you a cheap taste of whether or not you'll like playing with stick.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014KXMEW4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1463893276&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=hori+mini&dpPl=1&dpID=41f8NpX1B4L&ref=plSrch
I've got a friend who used it and liked it, though he did complain after a little while the joystick started to feel junky, though that could've just been his particular model. Sticks are great, and personally I find them more comfortable, but I figure if you're used to pad you probably won't want to jump right in with a pricey one.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-PlayStation-Licensed-8-Button-Arcade/dp/B00NHDSINS
this is the stick I have. It's just standard and has had no changes and I don't think the parts are sanwa on it so if they are an upgrade I think I may as well do it :)
Thanks
thanks for a quick response on such an old thread, I decided to settle on this As a current gen one, I'm hoping it works with PC/Guilty Gear or I'm going to be pretty sad
You can make a great one under $100. I bought a Qanba one and replaced the stick and buttons with Sanwa parts.
Qanba Drone Joystick for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 and PC (Fighting Stick) Officially Licensed Sony Product https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I0GEDEY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9VqRCbYR24NKK
The HORI RAP 4 is a solid choice.
If you really want to go cheap the HORI Mini works well enough. If you stick with fightticks you will almost certainly replace it, which I did with the RAP 4. That said, the Mini still serves as my spare if anyone is over.
How cheap is "cheap" to you?
This line is one of the best pads out there for SFV, and I don't personally consider it very expensive. You might try and find a used one on ebay or something if you need cheaper. Or one of the older gens. I personally use their older model.
the new MadCatz TES+ is 50 bucks off on amazon right now - https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018AW408C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469131772&sr=8-1&keywords=TES%2B
I bought in on release for 200, and have been very happy with it.
Almost anything is better than mayflash.
My personal favorite is this:

Both of these are generally considered the best new generation fightpads.

No floating dpad, but it's an excellent controller and works on PS4/PS3/PC with a flip of a switch.
This Fighting Commander is great too. It's symmetrical unlike the FC4 and doesn't have the rotating D-pad (which I read people saying it wears out). I've got it and its nice.
Will this controller work well for the PC? Do I need to install special drivers or perform obscure steps to make it work?
Regarding option 3 they are compatible with PS4/PC. I have one and like it a lot. Available on Amazon as well.

I love it
Here's the original from that tweet:https://www.amazon.com/Street-Fighter-V-PlayStation-4-Standard/dp/B00QXJFE08
quick repost it and grab that karma! I'm not going to do it!
(this thread is removed for rule 2 for original sources)
100s of controller that work on pc, don't need a ps4/xbone controller. Search "fightpad pc" (try xbox too) and lots pop up
I have this one for ps4, great pad. Think it should work on PC native too.
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450829211&sr=8-1&keywords=fight+pad
My buddy has this one and won't shut up about how great it is.
They also have one for xbox
I bought a Hori Fighting Commander Pro 4 back when it was on sale for 20$ from my local store and put that pcb into my TE S stick. It works perfect on my pc and on ps4s(no time out).
Switching out the pcb is cheap and easy even for a first timer. There's plenty of instructions out there on how to do it. Just use common sense, ask questions and take your time.
No man, its toooo old. you want to buy a new stick and not waste money on converters that will add input latency to your setup, there are loads of cheap PS4 sticks on amazon that can be upgraded with Sanwa parts or you can just buy a PS4 stick like Hori. All PS4 sticks work on PC
http://stores.horiusa.com/playstation-4/
alot of people get Hori or just buy a Madcatz
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-PlayStation-Licensed-8-Button-Arcade/dp/B00NHDSINS/ref=pd_sbs_63_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=M761SW4ARDBPMGVV3BVS
(this the cheapest one, but needs to be upgraded with Sanwa parts as the stock ones are shite)
You could easily put artwork on this stick and change the buttons and it would look cool...
The german Amazon still has some. Choose the cheaper ones for 37€ under new which are also from Amazon, which I bought. Only disadvantage is that it says it comes earliest at 16. April. Also can't say if it's cheaper than jp amazon with the shipping costs, better check both.
If you buy a stick, especially the hori rap 4, make sure the gate is octagonal or circular. a majorty come with a Japanese square gate with the latter it will feel like the more traditional american arcade sticks.
It's not a RAP V Kai(B0136JP894) XB360/XB1 as you list.
The actual one he uses
The distance between the stick and the buttons is a tad bit shorter, has a different PCB, has a touchpad, and uses the Eagle buttons rather than the older Kuro buttons(the newer RAP4 Kai models for ps3/ps4 use the Eagles as well).
Also, you should note in your OP that you are doing this to push amazon affiliate links. This is a for profit endeavour.
Fantastic starting stick:
https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018HXA6H8
(It's internals are technically a PS4 controller. Works natively on PC and PS4/PS3.
just putting this out there - hori rap 4 kai is normaly 150 and dips as low as $99
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Real-Arcade-Pro-PlayStation-4/dp/B00SULMRI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465016090&sr=8-1&keywords=hori+rap+4
imho a better value if you want a current gen stick for some reason.
otherwise just buy used
One thing about the RAP4 is the stick only sits about an inch above the platform, so there's not a ton of room for your fingers if your hands are really big. I have pretty big hands and its something I had to get used to.
The stick in question.
Damn.. no one is using the TES+?
It's on sale on Amazon for $159 right now.
https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018AW408C
Not that I should base my decision on buying one jus cuz some pro players use them, but looking at this list makes me want to jus go with the Hori RAP4 or spend like $70-$80 more on the TE2+
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-PlayStation-Licensed-8-Button-Arcade/dp/B00NHDSINS This is a good PS4 stick, although the buttons/stick are a little crappy so you may want to swap them out. This is very easy an doesn't cost much though.
Buy this for $150 and save the other $150 for beer and things that matter
Anyone know if this one is any good?
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Arcade-Pro-V-Fighting-Stick-Windows/dp/B0136JP894/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1458139023&sr=8-4&keywords=Madcatz+Fightstick+Pro
before switching to my TES+, i used to have the Hori mini 4.
A good stick for the price imo (its 10 $ cheaper than the madcatz stick).

Second on the Fighting Commander! If you're playing on PC, I recommend the PS4 one over the XBone one. The XBone controller is technically more customizable, but it's also a bigger pain, and the PS4 commander will just do what you need. It's also a great pad for emulators, platformers, and anything else that just needs a d-pad and some face buttons.
Check something like Amazon out, and search for "hori" and see what pops up. I hear the FC4 has a track record, check it out http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1457896848&sr=1-2&keywords=hori

Thank you very much! My friend's going to put in the PCB of this Fighting Commander, would that work?:

Highly recommend either of these sticks, if you're willing to spend the $$ for it. They make swapping parts and customizing very simple. A 5 year old can mod these sticks, if you're into that sort of thing.
Still 25% off. I have this one. I love it.
I have owned 2 other sticks and used various others. This is by far my favorite.
Is this any good as a super budget fightstick?
https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018HXA6H8/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1468879539&sr=1-5&keywords=fightstick
(its the Mad Catz Street Fighter V Arcade FightStick Alpha for ps4/ps3) I want one for pc.
Unfortunately the fighting commander 4 is the older version.
The 4 and 3 toggle on the front lets you switch from PS4 to PS3 modes, but there is no PC mode.
This is the newer one with 4/3/PC switch.
The fighting commander 4 you ordered is still good though, and Capcom has plans to support the game with X-input eventually.
In the meantime, I hear x360ce works really well.
This one is pretty widely recommended.. not sure if it's in your price range.
There is a book called "Simplifying Street Fighter" by /u/gootecks that is made with the express purpose of using USF4 as a tool to gear an inexperienced player up for SFV. I'd highly recommend checking it out.
I agree with /u/ChaosHat as someone who also used an octo gate for a while that life after using one is a bit better, but that's just personal preference.
Amazon actually has them in stock (and prime eligible to boot) but just know that right now if places aren't sold out, then they're selling for higher than usual. Gates are cheap enough though that the "higher than usual" price is still only $10.
This dual-mod tutorial was posted in /r/Kappa a few days ago. It doesn't look terribly hard, but you could mess up somewhere along the way.

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, contact a modder on SRK forums like gummo. You'll have to pay for new PCB and shipping which comes to $140 according to his website. At that price, though, you may be better off getting the new Hori PS4 stick.

https://smile.amazon.com/Qanba-Joystick-PlayStation-Fighting-Officially/dp/B01I0GEDEY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1478477279&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=qanba&psc=1
This is a decent stick for your price range that works with ps3,ps4, pc. You can switch out the buttons and stick, if you want. I normally stick with madcatz, but my friend has a qanba and i had no issues when I tried it out.

Game's been like $20 for ages bro.
I'm on PC and I use the Hori RAP V Hayabusa and it has settings for both PS4 and PC built in. If you plan to go to tournaments I recommend it.
I bought a Hori Fighting Commander 4
is this the same you have or is this an older one? I should get it delivered tomorrow, would be great if it had an X-input switch but I can find nothing about it on the site.
Apparently theyre having a sale as well, here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Fighter-FightStick-PlayStation4-PlayStation3-playstation-4/dp/B018HXA6H8
Thanks for the info! Would https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Atrox-Arcade-Stick-Xbox-360/dp/B00DHF3NS6 be decent? Sadly I live in a pretty small community and I doubt there's much of an FGC presence.
This is the one I just ordered last week, dat Saturn layout, I can hardly wait! Its on Amazon as Fighting Commander
You can get a Sanwa JLF octogate from Amazon:

The Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai was £80 on Amazon recently and is currently £90.
any feedback/reviews on the hori controller pad 4, they actually on sale right now on amazon ($30 instead of 45), i may take one as a spare controller
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8
Amazon has it: Fighting Commander

I just want a stick that works on PC and that i can bring to tournaments. If the Quanba didn't work i was looking at the new HORI one What do you think?
I bought a used Madcatz SFIV stick on eBay. It works OK -- I've since bought a second used one and between the two have one that works.
However, not too long ago, Amazon had the Atrox Razer for Xbox 360/PC for just $89.
I've found that my Atrox arcade stick is leaps and bounds a far better product than the Madcatz ones. The Madcatz one just feels cheap: the buttons, the stick, event the base, it just feels cheap.
Compared to the Madcatz, the Atrox is heavier, on all accounts. It's much bigger, the buttons are heavier, and have more push in their depression (albeit much more sensitive than the Madcatz). Just my experience, but I'm always looking for deals on the Atrox to pick up another one.
As far as thumb blisters:
This is normal for most people, you will develop callouses, then it won't be an issue anymore. Some inputs literally require blistering speed; Walking 720's are notorious for this.
Wrist or thumb joint Pain shouldn't happen. If it is, then you are gripping the controller too tightly (wrist), or pressing down too hard (thumb-joint). If you still have problems, consider picking up the hori FC4 (http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Fighting-Commander-Controller-PlayStation-4/dp/B00TKLFES8) - It lets you unlock the dpad and rotate it in place up to 20 degrees. With around 12 degrees of rotation it brings the vertical axis of the d-pad into perfect alignment with the handle and transforms into the most comfortable gamepad I have ever held. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter how hard you gripped it at that point, you shouldn't get any wrist pain.
Also if you're only playing on PC you probably can't get a better price than this for a premium stick (no, the issues with PS4 prototypes didn't suddenly make this stick bad):
https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Atrox-Arcade-Stick-Xbox-360/dp/B00DHF3NS6
The new one has xinput support. Maybe you can return it for that?
It's just called the Hori Fighting Commander. http://www.amazon.com/PS4-PS3-PC-compatible-Fighting-commander/dp/B017QORK8W/
I'm looking to replace the square gate in my Qanba Q2 pro with this Sanwa GT-Y octagonal gate. Is there any size difference between mountings for gates that I should be looking for or is there a one-size-fits-all mounting?
For PS4 users looking for a higher quality stick but can spend more there is the HORI and for PC and much cheaper is the razer atrox.
PS4: HORI Pro 4 for 239.99
For PC: Razor Atrox Arcade stick for 79.99
