It doesn't make you sound dumb, I'd rather see something unique and cool instead of the same mods that are done over and over again.

If you're looking into RallyX have you thought about swapping over to Forester suspension to raise it up a bit?

I'd go the Cobb AccessPort route instead of tactrix because of the simplicity and now that the V3 has come out, the V2 is around $100 cheaper I think. But if you're comfortable doing it that way do it.

I'm not sure if it's just the picture but the headlights look a bit foggy. I used this on my first car a few years ago and it worked great. Most of the other headlight restoration kits are bullshit. You could also bake them open and paint the plastic pieces black to spice things up.

If yellow foglights are your thing I used this on my Subaru and I love it. Just takes around 5 light coats on the outside of the fog lights and you're good to go. Much better than any of the tint overlays or light bulbs.

Here's some information on it. Daniel Stern is pretty well known as the lighting expert.

Another thing you could consider if you want to mix things up is plastidipping your car. DipYourCar has some wild colors, Sunset Orange and Tiffany Blue are my personal favorites. I'd stay away from the normal black though, it normally makes cars look pretty trashy.

Hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm telling you what to do with the car, just giving suggestions. Good luck!

Get NGK spark plugs. They are what the engine is designed for, and they're pre-gapped.

The pros use a tool like this to reach into the wells without worrying about a chain of extensions coming apart. Whether its worth the cost is up to you.

I always use anti-seize. I don't think its as important as it used to be, but its cheap and it gives me peace of mind. Also be sure to put dielectric great on the wires.

If you do it, be prepared to take a lot of stuff out, especially the battery and air intake. Its not an easy job, but it can save you a good amount of money.

Inno Wind Fairing - Amazon

Same one I run on my 2010 WRX. Medium size worked well for me and should for you also but I recommend double checking measurements. Comes a little cheaper in price compared to the Thule or Yakima units, but its still pretty good quality and actually looks pretty good also. Includes 4 clear vinyls to put under the feet on the fairing itself

Don't see many metal ones, so ABS plastic is usually the way to go

I use the Meguiar's Complete Car care kit which comes with a "quick detailer" similar to the above. I can't attest for the lucas slick mist stuff, but the quick detailer does look good.

For a full detail, I'll wash the car, then use the quick detailer and clay bar to get rid of any excess dirt, etc. Then use the actual wax from the kit and finish up with the headlight restoration stuff if needed. Makes the WRX look great. :) Hope that helps!

u/chriskmee · 2 pointsr/subaru

The first thing I would try is this:

Meguiar's Ultimate Compound

Meguiar's X3070 Soft Foam 4" Applicator Pads

Meguiar's X2020 Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels

All 3 of those together is under $20 (need to spend $25 since one is an add on item). This stuff is amazing for scratches and paint in general. While it won't make your car showroom ready, it will make it look much better and is totally worth the $20.

Essentially what you do is first make sure the area is clean, then apply the compound to the pad and rub the compound on your car using circular motions. After you do that for a minute or two, use the towel to remove the compound form the car.

u/ThaGerm1158 · 2 pointsr/subaru

You're getting ripped off at $2000, so $3,000 is astronomical.

My local subaru shop "not a dealer" does HG replacements starting at $900. There are often a few extra parts needed, so it can go up to $1,300, but that isn't often. They do great work and specialize in Subaru... I'm sure there is a similar shop in your area

With a new HG and some Subaru Coolant System Conditioner it should run 200,000 MORE miles.

Honestly, if you picked up a Subie with 78K for less than $3k, boy did you score... It's totally worth the REASONABLE HG replacement.

u/amberrgerr · 1 pointr/subaru

There is a product (I use meguiar's brand) called compound that you can use to minimize the appearance of swirls if applied by hand, and if done with a dual action polisher will remove them completely. It is also great for removing shallow scratches in clear coat and general clear coat issues (aside from flaking and scratches that are deep). Check out /r/AutoDetailing for more info :)

u/sparkie172 · 2 pointsr/subaru

You can go to autozone or wherever they check for you then look up online as code is generic. Each brand has their own specific meaning for the code. Before my cobb I used a Bluetooth obd2 reader 20$ online then used torque app from Android store free version to check and clear codes. It also does some pretty cool stuff for the paid version. The obd2 reader is small which I liked. I had 1 like this. https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-34t5-Bluetooth-Android/dp/B005NLQAHS

u/Rallywhale · 2 pointsr/subaru

Oh man, I know exactly how you feel! My 2.5i OB started misfiring like crazy last spring and it was a pain trying to diagnose it - I used injector cleaner, valve cleaner, cleaned my MAF and intake, swapped my MAF, and a ton of other things...finally decided to go for the plugs and wires, and after taking out the old ones found that my cylinder #4 wire and plug were dead - put in new plugs and wires all around, and it was like having a new car! I never would have suspected it to be the plugs because the car started and idled absolutely fine, but now I know!

Also, this is a lifesaver when swapping out spark plugs:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0014ZVSVK/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?refRID=1406E10SHZEDKB3XHWDP&ref_=pd_sim_auto_3

Love your OB by the way. Cheers!

u/commiecat · 2 pointsr/subaru

Here's what I have:

  • OBDII Bluetooth adapter

  • Torque Pro (Torque Lite is the free version)

  • ActiveOBD TQ plug-in (Standalone free version)

Torque Pro is an Android app that reads the adapter. Pro version has nice features but feel free to test out the free one first.

ActiveOBD gives some extra Subaru information. Use the standalone app first to see what it does. The plugin I bought is to view the information within Torque.

if you have a power drill, get the 3m restoration kit. it looks like this.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-39008-Headlight-Restoration-System/dp/B001AIZ5HY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396424163&sr=8-1&keywords=3m+restoration+headlight+kit

i mean you dont have to have a drill, but it would make it easier.

this is what mine looks like before and after. haha

Not low on coolant So that sounds promising. I already have a new thermostat and will replace tomorrow. I just didnt want to drain the whole system again. Is the Subaru Coolant Conditioner something I should add as well?

Will check on the heater core hoses and update.

Thanks so much for your help!

u/Platypoctopus · 1 pointr/subaru

Awesome, just found them, thanks!

Here they are for anyone else whose interested: https://www.amazon.com/Auto-Ventshade-896004-Ventvisor-Deflector/dp/B0035GQ5S2

u/PotheadCallingUBlack · 3 pointsr/subaru

Timing belt is a must because if it breaks, your engine is fucked. Its also the type of thing that I recommend leaving to a professional, though not necessarily a dealership. My Subaru dealership wanted $850 for a timing belt replacement. I went to a local mechanic who was well-regarded and I got it done for half that. Make sures its a Gates belt.

You could probably do all the other stuff yourself with a little help from forums and YouTube videos. I'd definitely replace the coolant because clean coolant is one of the best ways to avoid head gasket problems. Spark plugs are super easy if you take your time (and this thing makes the job even easier). I'd go ahead and replace plug wires too.

Transmission fluid is pretty easy, but don't forget to get an extra quart for the rear differential.

As far as brakes and rotors, you don't really know until you look at them and see.

u/subiebro · 2 pointsr/subaru

Sweet thanks! Just ordered myself a set. For anyone else interested, they're 15% off on Amazon right now, for the hatch set at least.

I use Meguiar's products on my wrx and it keeps it looking brand new.

Honestly, buy the Meguiars's Complete Car Care kit, its like $40 on amazon and has every cleaning product imaginable, and I've used all the sprays and gels countless times.

I've got this one for my 6 Plus, it works well with the phone in Portrait. I really enjoy it.

http://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Magnetic-Swift-SnapTM-Technology/dp/B00PGJWYJ0/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1453242228&sr=1-4&keywords=Magnetic+phone+mount

I've got a Otterbox Commuter style case on my phone, so I stuck one of the round metal discs on the back of the case. (Also comes with rectangle ones) If I placed it more towards the middle, I'm sure I could easily place my phone in landscape.

u/RichardCabezo · 2 pointsr/subaru

Nice! As preventative maintenance Subaru sells this stuff. It is rebranded Holt's Radweld. Small bottle. I threw some in my daughter's Subie just in case. Can't hurt I guess. If the headgaskets on the replacement motor were original units then it is probably just a matter of time before they go too. But, you never know. This magic Subie juice is supposed to help.

I used the 3m kit. Works really well, it's fairly involved but is the correct way to do it. You also will have to put some sealant or cover on it to prevent it happening again. I got the xpel kit. Ammonyc has a good guide.

If you don't have record of the last time the coolant was changed, change it. To play it safe I'd use Subaru Super Coolant (blue) with Subaru Cooling System Conditioner (Holts Radweld).

In the event you need to do the head gasket, Speed Academy has an amazing video I used to do mine.

  • Subarus tend to be easy to fix when they break. I have an '09 2.5i SE 5MT and I didn't even have to remove the hood to remove my engine.
  • Make sure whatever brand you use the new gaskets are MLS (multi-layer steel). As they are regarded in the community I used Six-Star Bernie.
  • If I had to do it again I would have used ARP studs to fasten my heads to the block.
  • Machine shop labor is cheap. Take your heads to one to have them professionally-decked.
  • When torquing the head studs into the block, find the Subaru directions (i.e., Mitchell1) and *follow them to the letter*. You're going to be turning them, backing them off, turning them again and whatnot. Just go with it.
  • "As long as ya got it outta there" you can change these things as well:
    • Timing belt & pulleys, thermostat, water pump (Aisin / "eye-shin" sells a reasonably-priced kit)
    • Coolant hoses
    • Spark plugs
    • Engine oil and filter
    • Oil pump
    • STi engine mounts (left, right)
    • *RECOMMENDED* oil pickup (the OEM one tends to crack, starving your engine of oil)
    • *RECOMMENDED* timing belt guide (as the stamped OEM one failed when my engine blew, I replaced it with a Tomei milled one)

Call me crazy, but when I blew my engine I elected to keep the car. Subaru has engineered a family sedan way better than it has to be for the market and it shows.

I need to do some digging to find the invoices of parts I purchased; I'll update this reply as I find them.
u/deafblindgimp · 3 pointsr/subaru

They're Auto Ventshade 896005. They work well and dont break the bank, also look pretty good imo.

u/FRDV · 2 pointsr/subaru

Thank you! It's a rola basket with the extension to make it a lil bigger and a yitamotor 34 inch curved Led bar. The curve of the bar matches the curve of the basket almost perfectly. I wrapped the basket where it attaches together with FiberFix just for some extra strength and also the back half of the basket is suspended over the roof without support from a cross bar so it needed the reinforcement.

u/unclesam_0001 · 2 pointsr/subaru

Recently installed this in my fiancée's 2014 Forester. Installation and set up are very easy. Subaru's interior... character make hiding the cable into the interior panels pretty easy. It was somewhat more difficult to install in my 2010 Buick Lacrosse (I know, I'm hoping to have a WRX within the next three years) due to how tightly fit the panels and such were. Easy playback, HD, everything. It's mid-range as far as price is concerned, but that money goes toward night-time quality and overall durability of the camera.

u/pheesh · 2 pointsr/subaru

Great looking Impreza.

Dumb question, what are the front license plate mounting holes like?

I have a 2016 Forester and had to get a special mounting bracket because the holes are Japanese style. I have an 2017 Impreza on order was wondering if I needed the same thing.

If I zoom in the front bumper, it looks like there are two little button-ish things?

You can't fix it, but you can possibly make it better by experimenting with different fluids.

Extra S 75w-90 is Subaru's http://www.amazon.com/Subaru-75W90-Performance-Transmission-Fluid-1/dp/B007L6Q1EK?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

There's that one cocktail I'd rather not refer to by name since I wouldn't promote it particularly.

I'd head over to NASIOC and read the 11ty posts made by a combination of smart people and complete idiots and see if you can make sense of it. I just bought ExtraS because I didn't feel like constantly draining and filling it in the name of science.

u/incrediboy729 · 1 pointr/subaru

I got this for our Outback:

https://www.amazon.com/Rola-59504-Vortex-Mounted-Basket/dp/B004R34HDC

Plus this:

It's a HUGE rack and half the price of Thule or Yakima. Highly recommend. I believe you'll need to purchase the crossbars for it though.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/subaru

Sorry, but Extra-S is available in 1 QT containers on Amazon. I've purchased them in the past, it's legit.

u/thehair · 1 pointr/subaru

i just bought this one off amazon but it's for android only. I'm assuming you're using an iphone though? I honestly don't know that much about app radio units, All i know is the dashcommand app is listed on pioneers website for app radio. I believe for dashcommand on iphone you need a wifi obd 2 dongle (same idea as the one i linked to, only wifi).

Ask your dealer about the grille to be safe, just let them know it was an optional accessory on the car new. Sport grille or something was what they called it. Similar accessory is available on the 2017 off the top of my head if a name check was needed

u/o0xFuzzYx0o · 1 pointr/subaru

Just for the sake of another option, you could try one of these. It just fastens in under one of your front seat mounting bolts. Been using one for awhile myself and it's a pretty sturdy mount.

u/ToNIX_ · 1 pointr/subaru

Check out the Rola basket. Nicest one IMHO, less tall than the Yakima.

u/sgrabarz16 · 6 pointsr/subaru

Hella horns. Really popular among the Subaru community.

u/MrGreg · 1 pointr/subaru

I went to a scrap yard and got some extra connectors of the same type used to plug the mirror into the car behind the head liner and made a short male to female "extension" cable, and wired in a 12V usb charging adapter (this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CPW49US/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item)

So I didn't have to modify the car in any permanent way. I made it for my 2005 WRX, and just moved it over to my new 2017 WRX last week.

edit:

And since you asked someone else, I'm using this camera: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X528FNE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

I really like that it tucks in behind the mirror. I can't see it at all from the driver's seat.

u/Futurskullz · 2 pointsr/subaru

Not sure if it's what you're referring to, BUT lately I've been spotting that lots of subaru's with aftermarket grills reveal these two little circles in front of the radiator.

Finally did a search and found they are the "Hella Supertones" op mentioned in his mod list. They're aftermarket horns that seem to be louder than stock. They look kind of cool. Don't know about $50 cool.

u/Pyro919 · 1 pointr/subaru

I was wondering too and googled a few of the mods he listed below, looks like they're Hella Supertones

I use a magnetic phone mount that sits in a vent. It's quite sturdy. It comes with 3 magnets, 2 with a sticky side and 1 without. Just slip one of the magnets between your phone case and it's ready to go.

Bought on Amazon, link below. The front ones do ok as long as you don't lower the window past them. The rear ones do nothing, but no brand or style would do anything due to the way the rear windows open. They don't just open from the top but the rear edge also opens. So the rear ones are simply for looks no matter the brand you buy.

Keep in mind these will only come on if the cubby light is on (i.e. if the headlights are on). so if you want it to turn on when you open the door, your headlights will have to be on (for me, I have the auto headlights so it will turn on when it is dark enough. I'm not exactly sure if the auto headlights are a limited trim option or standard though)

For the 2016's its a bit harder to get to the plug to plug in the kit. Youll need to take off the driver side knee panel and the glove box entirely. Then there are two bolts that hold the bottom of the front center console (head unit and HVAC controls). There are instructions on some of the forums on how to do this.

Well water got in the screw holes to rust it, but that could happen with any rack really. Make sure you cover up the screw holes with something! Don't do Scotty's Cocktail. I can't believe that thread is still up on the forums. I've worked on a few cars with the cocktail in it before. Each time I drain the fluid it comes out like a smurfberry milkshake of blue-green goop. Owners said it worked for a few hundred miles, then started shifting like crap. Grinding gears and difficult getting it in and out of gear.

I've also had the (mis)pleasure of meeting Uncle Scotty at a meet in Houston. He's one of the worst, arrogant assholes I've met in my life. He's tried to start more than a few fights at our meets over people's cars.

If you live in a warm weather climate I would suggest that you just use Subaru Extra-S. The dealer can order it in a 5 gallon drum for about $150 or you can buy it online in quarts from Fred Beans Subaru for around $15/quart. I say "warm weather climate" because Extra-S will want to be warmed up before it shifts smoothly. If it gets below freezing, you will notice difficulty getting it in and out of gear until the transmission warms up.

If you compete in motorsports or live in cold weather climates Motul 300 has been highly recommended. You can get Motul 300 at TurnInConcepts for about $20/quart:
