The switch definitely has the possibility for many accessories. I'll link all the stuff I've bought at the end because I would recommend all of them

There is built in storage but not enough. I will recommend any micro SD card that's either 64 or 128 gb depending on how many games you plan on downloading. If you're going mostly mobile eshop games would definitely be more convenient.

As for other items, I love my pro controller but its not a necessity. I also only use it at home so it might not be for you.

You need a case for it, no two ways about it. The good news is that they are pretty cheap. There's cases that just carry the console, that carry the console and some extras, and that carry pretty much everything you could want to carry. Unless you're taking the dock often, I would just suggest a case with some extra storage.

I'd suggest a battery bank. There are a million options out there, and most of it has to do with cost. Just buy a size you like from a trusted brand like anker, ravpower, or aukey.

You also need a screen protector, because the plastic screen is not exactly durable. Anything works, but I would recommend tempered glass.

I think most of your questions depend on how you plan to use your Switch. For me, 99.9% of the time I use it in handheld mode, so accessories important for my usage are different than someone who primarily uses it in docked mode.

u/mundozeo · 12 pointsr/Switch

Be mindful of what accessories you personally need. People needs are different. The only global accessories that seem to be useful to everyone:

  1. A screen protector. This applies to pretty much any tablet accessory where the screen is not covered by design (like the 3DS clam shell). This is the one I got and it works well ($9.00):

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N3ASPNV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  2. A carrying case. Being portable, odds are you will want to take it out at some point. Seeing it's an expensive piece of hardware, it makes sense to have a case to put everything in it for protection. You can buy the neat ones with colors and crazy designs and space, but for me, this basic one works perfectly fine ($13.00):

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X97FLWF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  3. An extra charger. Unless you already have a Type C charger, you will likely want to get one. Usually goes for $15.00.

    https://www.amazon.com/Charger-CHOETECH-Included-Nintendo-Supported/dp/B017I7EX46/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1506098286&sr=1-8&keywords=switch+charger

  4. If, and ONLY if you plan to get your games digitally, you WILL want an additional memory card. The one I paste below has enough space for at least 20 games given the average game space that we've seen so far (BoTW takes 14 GB, but Mario Odyssey takes 5.5 Gb, so in average, it evens out.). Note this is only the games you can have installed at a time, you can always remove one or more if you want to download another one, and games you purchase digitally will always be available for re download as long as the eshop exists.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V62XBQQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any other accessory should REALLY be considered on a need-to basis. Not everyone needs a pro controller (depending on the games you play, I've been fine without it with only BoTW, Mario Kart, Fate/Extella and Mario+Rabbids.), and not everyone needs an extra, improved stand/dock.

Finally, do some research on what games you will actually want to play. What I've seen is that games on the switch are NOT cheap, and unless you have extra disposable income, buying a game you don't really play can lower your overall appreciation of the system. Not only that, but because releases are sparse at the moment, it's easier to jump into the hype in order to keep using your shiny new hardware. Though that really applies to any console.

Not if you do it right.

Not sure if this is allowed but here is an Amazon link to the glass protector that I have. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_Z1EhAbRY2ZRJ5

It was easy to install. It came with all the necessary materials to ensure the screen is clean prior to installation. It also has two protectors in the pack so is a very nice deal.

Just take your time doing the installation. Make sure you follow the instructions. Like doing it in a bathroom after running the hot shower for a few minutes. The high humidity prevents dust from floating in the air as well.

Yes

This is what I got: homase Nintendo Switch Hard Back Case Cover Anti-Scratch Transparent Crystal Protector Shock https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VHQ9KW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RvEszbVT1GN2T

No issues, easy to remove for docking. Got this too: amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Nintendo Switch 2017 (2-Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3wEszbDD7RE2K

PowerA Switch Everywhere Messenger Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N22YAIP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CxEszbS7T1JSP

First screen protector that installed with ease, better than icarez. Do it in a humid bathroom. And messenger bag I didn't want but knew I'd be frequently taking my system solo and sometimes the dock to relatives so it was a good price, $30 like new. It was sealed!

Anyway if you frequently go from docked to not, it all depends on your controller arrangement. If you can leave the stock joycons on its not time consuming to take off the tablet clear protector. But daily removal and installation of controllers for a grip would get annoying?

I'm hunting for either a pro controller from colorware or a rubber cover not black for neon joycons on stock comfort grip. Good luck!

i haven't personally got a sd card for mine but my advice go for as big as you can afford, i would recommend the orzly screen protectors really good quality https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N9RG3XS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

personally i dont really take my switch outside so never bothered with any cases but I would recommend picking up a LAN adapter if you plan on playing any online games like splatoon, not sure about everyone else's but the signal strength on my switch, unless I'm in the room with the router, its pants. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MYTSN18/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Galen640 · 10 pointsr/Switch

First of all: Screen Protector. Once it's on you never notice it, doesn't hurt to get that extra safety!

I've bought 10 games so far, and I'd say get all of these because I have enjoyed them. BOTW, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, Rayman Legends, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (assuming you like DBZ,) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokken Tournament DX, Street Fighter 2 Ultra, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Yooka Laylee.

If I had to pick 3 for you to get to start out then I would pick Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I think that's enough variety to keep you busy for awhile.

A carrying is always a good thing, I'd recommend This case because it's the one I use and does its job.

Accessory wise I have joycon grips which are AMAZING when playing with one joycon.

Also, the grip it comes with is trash. Get the Power A Grip it feels A LOT better in your hands.

As for SD Cards, it depends. I have a 32GB SD card. I mainly buy physical games, The extra space is for screenshots and videos, and download only games, like Sonic Mania, Yooka Laylee, etc. If you're going for digital only then get a 256GB. Sure you won't use a ton of space now, but you might a few years down the line. Also, do NOT get the official Nintendo ones. They are a RIP-OFF! Here are some nice alternatives that will get the job done for A LOT cheaper: 32 GB 64 GB 128 GB and finally 256 GB

If you have any other questions feel free to ask OP, and other (potential) switch owners!

Quick edit: sorry that some links won't be put with the text, no idea what the issue is

u/brisnipe · 5 pointsr/Switch

This is the screen protector that I got. Looks great, feels great, works great. And it’s a super cheap investment to keep that screen looking amazing. I had the plastic film one on my switch ( it came with my hybrid cover ) it was ok for a little while but definitely got scuffed up quick and didn’t feel nearly as good as the glass ones.

u/TheBeast1981 · 1 pointr/Switch

If you plan to play all together (4 players) and the budget is limited you can get just 1 more set of joycons since every joycon can be used as a controller so with 4 joycon (2 pair) you can play all together.

If you want to use a full joycon set as a single controller you may need a joycon controller grip or you can use them without it using the wriststraps included.

You can buy cheap but good wired horipad so you don't have to worry about charging batteries or kids throwing them since they are pretty cheap.

As other said you'll need a bigger MicroSD and I would recommend too to setup your switch the night before so it will be updated and ready when the kids open it christmas morning.

u/Irrelevant231 · 10 pointsr/Switch

I personally have an Orzly tempered glass screen protector, but these are mostly useful against scratches; Nintendo opted for a plastic screen which can scratch very easily, whereas glass is more prone to cracking (I have heard that plastic won't do this as easily). Tempered glass, as the wikipedia article states that when broken, because of the way it is manufactured it will 'crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass (a.k.a. annealed glass) does. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.' This should, therefore, protect the screen, and the worst case scenario isn't dangerous.

For something to protect it when in use, I have no personal experience. However, both my travel case and screen protector are from Orzly, and they appear very high quality, the screen protector had a very helpful tutorial video on youtube regarding application, and a few days after ordering I got a helpful email with tips for application. Because of this, I am inclined to believe they have high standards, so I am not surprised that their grip case is Amazon's choice for "Nintendo Switch grip". The description mentions impact resistance, and it has very positive reviews and several questions answered. Because of this, I highly suggest you have a look at the Amazon page yourself.

I highly recommend the Satisfye grip when used handheld. Fully supports the joy cons to prevent bending/flexing, and makes it so much more comfortable. This plus a glass screen protector is my setup. A silicone case wouldn't fit with it due to fitting very tightly on the bare switch, but the satisfye seems to be a pretty good case as far as protection goes on its own. Most importantly, the rigidity it adds.

I totally agree, I can recommend the bt adaptor from homespot:

https://www.amazon.com/HomeSpot-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Compatible-Headphones/dp/B07L9SL7ZT/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr0_2?keywords=switch+bt+adapter+genki&qid=1566201031&s=gateway&sprefix=switch+bt+adapter&sr=8-2-fkmr0

While it's definitely something Nintendo should have included, it gets the job done, works flawlessly with my Sony mdr 1000x, as well as my Jabra Elite Active 65t :)

u/UltimaGabe · 2 pointsr/Switch

I personally have this case and I love it. It has plenty of space to hold games and joy-con straps (not quite enough room for extra controllers, unfortunately) and is sturdy enough and looks good too. The extra bits and bobs are kind of useless, though (I have no use for the controller grips or stick covers and the screen protector is pretty garbage) so I don't necessarily recommend someone buying it if there's a cheaper option available. As for a screen protector, I used this one right here and it's absolutely amazing- no loss in picture quality whatsoever (as opposed to what you get with plastic ones) and super resistant to scratches. And since it comes with two (all for a measly $8 right now) you can use one for yourself and sell or gift the other one to a friend.

u/MoldyCat · 1 pointr/Switch

I too just bought a switch the other day (finally found one).

Here is what I have bought (so far):

[A Stand]
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZAYH58/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) needed? Maybe not, but I won't always have my screen with me to tote around.

Charge grip The grip that currently comes with the switch does not charge. I am ok with the switch's controllers, but do not like the idea of sliding it down on the screen every time they needed charged. I can't see me getting a "pro controller" but that is an option.

[This cable] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073JJB3DB/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I played all day Sunday, and noticed the switch was over heating. This cable allows for the switch not need to dock. Needed? No, but teaming this up with the stand and this means I should not have over heating issues.

And then I got these grips because the match my controllers, and I wanted that "back" hump for better grip.

Why grips and charge grip? Well I modded the charge grip already, are removed the plastic built-around.

I also bought a screen protector, the tampered glass one, for the screen, but I got that at a store.

To many case options out there, I got lucky a found a Zelda BotW special edition when they came out, so I have that. As for mobile charging, no help there.

u/timidandshy · 2 pointsr/Switch

I love my amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector - it was super easy to install, and I'm not worried about putting the Switch in the dock and taking it out anymore.

It's quite cheap, and very highly reviewed on Amazon (4.7 stars with almost 14.000 reviews): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV

amFilm Tempered glass https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N3ASPNV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I had a hori screen protector and it was awful. Like all plastic screen protectors it's hard to keep them from getting bubbles and getting them on straight.

This thing comes with stickers so you can line it up and then let it close on the screen like a book cover. Meaning you get it lined up better and it's nice.
It's also less fingerprint prone and easier to clean and far harder to scratch. You also get 2.

u/ngarnham · 1 pointr/Switch

I'm in Canada and I bought the following: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06WGSKRKL/ref=pe_386430_121528420_TE_dp_2
Great case that can hold many games as well as the joycon straps and some ear buds that I keep in the zippered compartment. The charger that came with the console may fit in there as well but seemed to put a lot of pressure on the system. It is not bulky at all.

I also bought a screen protector:https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01N9RG3XS/ref=pe_386430_121528420_TE_dp_1
It went on easily and still looks great!

u/Snapple32 · 2 pointsr/Switch

The Samsung EVO cards at Amazon, as I understand are exclusive to Amazon and are nothing more than GREEN repackaged version of same card you can get at other retailers but many time marked down really good, I got the the 128 gb for 36$ around christmas which was one of the best deal around at the time and rated for faster speeds than the Switch can even handle

39.99 now for 128gb

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWZWYVP/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Of course I felt cofomtable getting 128 gig as I don't want to be digital download unless I have to but every game has patch and patch adn DLC after DLC , but get as big as you can stand to pay for and feel you need.

u/exceptionthrown · 1 pointr/Switch

Yeah, that would be nice. One thing you can do is buy one of the dockless dongles like this so you can "dock" the switch without actually docking it.

It would be nice if it fit the normal dock though...

u/ObeyHillReddit · 3 pointsr/Switch

Sure just a warning it may pop up as $50 but just make sure you have a prime Account for Amazon if not you can just make one and use the 1 month free trial.

the 3ds requires you to have the sd card formatted to FAT32, it will not take exFAT. So depending on how the switch formats the card you might not be able to take the switch sd card to the 3ds but likely the other way around should work.

I would recommend just getting a new SD card as they are pretty cheap 64gb for $23 or 128gb for $40 200gb+ will start around $80 and go up from there.

u/jd64097 · 1 pointr/Switch

I am not sure about the speed but i think it can only do about 100/mbs. This is the card i have, and i have had no slowness issues, and the picture looks amazing (on games like skyrim, botw, mario kart, odyssey, etc) wether playing in handheld or on my 50inch plasma tv in 1080p. The 8bitdo controllers are solid, I have been using this for indie games and retro stuff which makes up alot of my Switch Library:

If you need a more modern controller for games just buy a wired Switch Controller. Personally I really like HORI's controllers and this one features a really good D-Pad:

This screen protector is probably the best I've used across any device and definitely the easiest I've ever installed.

If you plan on using it in handheld mode for long periods of time, you're going to want to get these grips + carrying case. Seriously, your hands will thank you. I use my Switch almost exclusively in handheld mode, and have absolutely no hand/finger fatigue during longer gaming sessions.

The best way I found was buying another official switch dock take out the internals and put it into this shell

Generally anything third party that handles charging with the Switch is risky. Safest option is that there are kits to open the official dock and reshell it with a smaller form factor. Like this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_04BcBb3VCFJT7

is what i'm talking about. cause the nintendo one is like $40 from the amazon website cause they only have them available from 3rd parties.

u/Phaedrus0230 · 2 pointsr/Switch

There are definitely adaptors that work, but I was under the impression they needed to be made for the switch... I'm guessing thats "proper"

example

It's worth noting that thing requires external power to work. A normal usb-c to hdmi adaptor for a computer can be powered by the computer.

Best advice I can give a new Switch owner, is don't use that dock. Get a usb-c extension cable, run that from your dock which you can hide somewhere, to the Switch. Keep the Switch on one of these slick stands, and in one of these grip cases. It will not get scratched, will stay cooler, and look nicer. Plus you never need to remove the grip case now.

These are what I got, many type of stands to choose from though.

Case https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Yteam-Protective-Anti-Scratch/dp/B078TC25QY/ref=sr_1_6?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1521465807&sr=1-6&keywords=switch+grip+case

I have the Nyko dock as well and the one time I tried to use it I had no picture. I did some research and found out about the potential damage they can cause and decided to never use it again.

I ended up buying a second official dock and installing it in this shell and it works perfectly. Plus it fits in my travel case so I can play easily in my hotel rooms.

u/compacta_d · 1 pointr/Switch

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Game-Traveler-Deluxe-Travel/dp/B01MY9JB2U

i picked up that one from target. I like it, but it is somewhat minimal. not sure another joycon will fit.

u/jrbless · 3 pointsr/Switch

If vertical clearance is your problem, I have a suggestion. Get a BASSTOP Portable Dock Shell and transplant the "guts" of the normal dock into this shell. Much easier to get the Switch in and out this way when you have space considerations.

Since this approach uses the normal hardware of an official dock, you don't need to worry about it being 3rd party for bricking-type issues.

My recommendations:

Lamicall stand. Extremely sturdy, folds up small, perfect for charging on the go.
I can't reccommend this thing enough. Hooked it onto the back of a seat last week while my flight was landing and had no problems with it shaking or sinking.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071D3V38H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NYgnzbZDKP2FQ

Also would recommend a good battery by anker with powerIQ, along with an anker charging cable.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K6TA748/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_s8gnzbPRKBKJ8

One more thing I'd recommend is the butterfox carrying case. Not the prettiest, but by far the most protective and capacitive. I've been able to keep my anker battery, charging cable, extra joycons and stand in the spare pocket.

Stick with the dock and power cord that came with your switch. If you are at all handy, you can get a replacement shell that you can carefully remove the guts of the original and replace.

Just btw - if you've already got scratches you're not gonna find a screen protector that'll help with that.

I also really like the tomtoc slim case (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0769CK4Z7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_-aPMAbYXYQVV1), but it does have a chemical smell that takes a few days to dissipate.

I picked up the messenger bag, this way I have my arm sitting over it while walking. I trust no one.

I have one of these. Works well

u/reddit455 · 1 pointr/Switch

well, since the entire system is so compact (you want to carry the dock too?)

you can get a "pick and pull" camera case.. box full of foam, that's precut.. pull the parts where your stuff goes and you don't have to worry about bulkiness of the hard case.

smaller and less expensive than this one.. but you get the idea.

https://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1520-Camera-Case-Orange/dp/B00009XVLJ/

camera/range bags have all kinds of weird size/shaped accessories,

https://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Nova-DSLR-Camera-Shoulder/dp/B0016JA2YS/

as far as the charger, I'd get the nintendo official one. $30

amazon sells 2 under their basics line.

regular one which is only $5 less than nintendo's

and a handheld only (no dock) version for $15 (which, has me somewhat intrigued, tbh)

Does someone have experience with this 8Bitdo dongle, it should allow you to use any remote controller, for example from PS4.

My spouse and I bought this dock shell that is designed for the motherboard from the OG switch dock to fit perfectly inside of it. So it would still use the OG Nintendo dock but is a MUCH more portable, and in our opinion, more convenient docking mechanism. And no risk of bricking. Win-win

It's the basic stock "official" Nintendo switch case and it is very nice.

I ended up preferring the Amazon Basics version as it was slightly smaller and the handle on the official one annoyed me.

This one has a cross head screwdriver, if you don't have one for electronics.

I just bought a joystick replacement on Amazon. I was a little skeptical at first but I said what the hell let’s do it. It costs me around 30$ CAD for two Joysticks and replacing mine took me 15mins tops and went well.

Screen protector. I got https://www.amazon.com/amFilm-Tempered-Screen-Protector-Nintendo/dp/B01N3ASPNV Put it on correctly and you'll hardly notice it's there.

Case for travel/storage.

Because I have more people in my household, more Joy-cons.

Haven't maxed out my in-game storage yet, so memory card eventually.

With the price of cards, go with a 128 Gig Card. They are SO cheap now. 256 Gig cards are still way too expensive. You could buy 2 128s and swap them out cheaper than 1 256.

u/TheCochese · 1 pointr/Switch

The 128gb version of this is basically sold out. Any issues if I go with this one instead?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073JYC4XM/ref=twister_B07B3MFBHY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Or should I go with a UHC-3 card?

u/toastyhoodie · 1 pointr/Switch

Get a larger SD card. Really. You can get 256gb for $40 or 128 for $20 even.

16gb isn’t remotely usable

Dang that sucks man :/ maybe you could get a different type of dock?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ

This thing seems pretty rad, you do have to do a bit of fiddling with the old dock to get it to work.

This video explains it: https://youtu.be/UL7zXpJGl1s

u/TrandaBear · 2 pointsr/Switch

Why not? It's $9 peace of mind and you get two protectors for that price. Link

Bad thing about most cases are they don't work with dock. This would serve the purpose and is adjustable and foldable... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZAYH58/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_l9vPAbVWRTK8J

I don't have a PS4 but it says you can.. I think. Ninja edit after reading. It's not so clear. Not on my PC so I'll get back to you.

Edit: looks like it's literally only for Switch, Windows, Mac and the Pi. I thought it was just another dumb incorrect Amazon title, but it turns out I'm the one who's dumb and incorrect.

Sorry for being rude but... why did you buy a 32GB card, and then a 64gb card?

Why didn't you just go BLAM! and get yourself squared a way till prices drop on other cards?

Here's the one I use. It pairs with my AirPods when flying.

TROND Bluetooth Transmitter/Receiver

I used these to velcro attach it to the Switch. I but a strip in half and place the soft side on the Switch.

Command Black Picture Hanging Strips

And I use a really short 3.5mm cables with right cable connectors on both ends. Forget where I got it, wasn't on Amazon at the time. A local electronics or music store might have something similar. Or use your Google fu.

If I were to get a USB-C connecting model I'd look at the HomeSpot Bluetooth Audio Transmitter Adapter. About the same total cost, and just one the piece with no setup required. But you can't listen and charge at the same time.
