SX OS, you did it! I'll be testing this out later today, but already this seems to perfect for the community. Already have a USB 3.0 just for this. I also have an external HDD that I might try this with. ;)

EDIT: For those bickering about sd speeds vs usb speeds:

Here's a spec of a decent card.

https://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/microsd-cards/ultra-microsd

Shows only "Read Speed: up to 95MB/s"... so you're giving the micro sd card way too much credit. :)

Here is spec of a decent usb HDD

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-256GB-Type-C-SDDDC2-256G-G46/dp/B06XC1WGQR/

Shows only "Read speeds, up to 150MB/s"... so even though it's not the theoretical speeds. It's clear that usb HDD is much faster than micro sd.

EDIT2: Fixed words
EDIT 3: Great point about USB speed limitations. Since the switch still runs USB 2. Max speed is around 60MB/s.

If you're interested in getting into soldering, get a few cheap kits like battery powered light up gadgets and the like. They're usually around like $10, so it's not that big a deal if you break them while you're learning to solder. Next, a hands free solder station and a proper soldering iron make all the difference. The hands free option is the cheapest of the cheap and the iron is just a personal preference. Being able to control the heat of your iron and keep your board accessible is super useful. I ruined a couple of PS2s being cock-sure with an $8 iron and no practice.

for those interested in a more simple solution if you have just ps4, xbox360, controllers etc.

This product can wirelessly or wired connect just about every single first party (and quite a few third party) controllers I've tried to switch, pc, ps3. has modes for emulating xbox controller on pc and can sync pro controllers ps3 controllers and ps4 controllers alike. Not a shill just making sure people know theres an easier way to use controllers with the switch, been using this for about 4 months and have loved it

is the dongle anything more than a usb-c thumb drive? any chance in grabbing something like this and using it for Atmosphere once it's released? granted it's not much cheaper (unless you go with the 32gb) and will require some configuration, but it does have the added convenience of a usb 3.0 connector as well as the ability to be used as a normal everyday thumb drive.

forgive me if i'm way off. i'm more of a tutorial follower than having any real knowledge about this kind of stuff.

Yeah, here's the link if you're curious. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075JDRHV3/ref=twister_B073XKXQW4?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

The quality is hit or miss, it seems. Some people in the reviews have had slightly warped shells that don't close all the way. With some, it's just cosmetic, with a few, it's caused issues with rumble feeling faint. Most seem to be have success with them, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

If you're talking about this, then yeah I already saw it. However, I was hoping to do something wireless, as well as I'm kinda curious how to go about it myself as a project, I guess. Just looking to see if there were any resources to pour over.

This is quite a bit better than the PowerA version

Could you use a converter to plug in a wired Xbox controller?
Something like this : https://www.amazon.com/FastSnail-Controller-Converter-Controllers-Compatible/dp/B073ZFPJLQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542654028&sr=8-3&keywords=switch+xbox+controller

You'd still have to play in handheld mode to remove the motion control requirement but at least you could have the switch on a table and interact with a normal controller.

$9 kit includes two triwing bits and pry tools.

as far as dismantling goes, the switch seems to be the easiest one in recent time.

The audio doesn't transmit through the USB cable to that capture program, just the video (for some reason) - so the audio needs to be connected separately.

I do also sometimes occupy the tablet's jack with a MINI MIC so I can play through the Switch's speakers and record my voice at the same time.

The specific one I got isn't listed anymore. I think they might've replaced it with a newer model. This one looks identical though and it's the same price I paid for mine. I don't think it matters if it's an Xbox One or One S controller: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073ZFPJLQ

so for people who don't like the idea of soldering or making this permanent,
would a tiny sliver of copper foil tape with conductive adhesive make this work too?
https://www.amazon.com/Copper-Conductive-Adhesive-1inch-12yards/dp/B018RDZ3HG

i don't think it'd be too hard to put a piece over the two pins under the foam.

I would only suggest doing this mod if you are extremely comfortable with a soldering iron. I'm not responsible if you mess up your Joy-Con. With that being said below are the things I used to make this possible:

Parts

  1. Take apart your Joy-Con.
  2. Run two wires from the Pin 10 pad and the ground as shown in this picture: https://i.imgur.com/mpbtqVQ.jpg Leave some extra wire so you can cut to size later. Soldering to the ground plain can be a pain I brought my Iron up to 750 F, used a bigger tip and had to hold it there for awhile before it would become molten.
  3. Re-assemble your Joy-Con up to putting the back on it.
  4. Take the 6mm x 6mm x 6mm Tactile push button and cut off the leads on one side and bend the other leads flat.
  5. Cut two small pieces of weather seal and place them on top of each other and hot-glue the button to the top of it.
  6. Place your weather seal and button down to the left side below the battery so it doen't interfere with the rail.
  7. Cut your wires to size and solder each wire to their own lead on the button.
  8. Place your back cover on to the Joy-Con to see where the button is and make a mark in the center of the button.
  9. Remove the back cover and slowly drill a hole stepping up bit sizes until the button fits in.
  10. Re-assemble and enjoy!
