The Girls Who Went Away is a good book about this that's widely available. Women share their experiences of maternity homes and what it was like to give birth and treated like they didn't deserve the same care as married mothers.

Black Players is really good. White guy recounts he and his wife immersing themselves with Oakland (SF Bay Pimps) in the 60s/70s for doctoral research paper.

Tales of Times Square by Josh Alan Friedman is fairly legendary. I'm somewhat surprised that Simon didn't enlist Friedman as a consultant on the show.

Friedman also has a podcast out by the same name where he plays interviews he did from the era (season 1 only, season 2 he goes off on other tangents): https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/tales-of-by-josh-alan-friedman/id1281817595?mt=2
