/u/erikk38's story about the ice cream place reminded me of the comic book story Summer Job by Adrian Tomine (in Sleepwalk: and Other Stories. That story (and the pink frosting story shudder) has stuck with me through the years. Summer Job is about this kid who's home from college or about to go to college, who's working a summer job. The other workers are nice to him, but he resists becoming attached to them because for him it's just a summer job. At the end of the story he does something that shows contempt for the job and his colleagues, perhaps because he can't process his ambivalence both about leaving the job and about his class advantage. Anyway the "because we are such good friends" exchange reminded me of this. The way the economic relationship never stays just an economic relationship, but is also always awkwardly mediated by money. The story from a previous episode about the haircutter also ties into this.

I personally had several summers in a row during college where I would start a job, work for about six weeks, something about the job would become too intense, and then I would freak out and give two weeks notice and leave early.
