Im from Orange County, CA, 27/m, and I just came from Tomorrowland solo and I had never been to an EDM festival before. I learned a lot and I will be coming to TomorrowWorld but this time with a group of friends. Here is what I learned:

*IT IS GOING TO BE THE BEST FUCKING TIME OF YOUR LIFE.
There was a Tomorrowland Solo travellers group that helped connect with other solo travels so about 7 of us solo travellers ended up hanging out throughout the weekend.
Even if you dont go with anyone, everyone usually is super nice and friendly. I camped next to a group of british dudes that were super cool with us and we all ended up hanging out together.

Bring comfortable shoes. Do NOT buy shoes right before you go to the festival. You want to bring comfortable shoes that have already been broken in, and you will be dancing around for about 7-8 hours a day. You dont want to be nursing blisters on your feet from new shoes while at the festival. I learned this IRL. You will be walking. A LOT. From my tent to the mainstage was almost a 30 minute walk. and at TML, the Mainstage was right after the main entrance, I heard at TMW, its opposite, so it's an extra 10-15 min walk from the entrance to the mainstage, just things to consider.

At Tomorrowland, they gave you waterbottles without caps. Basically a capless waterbottle is easy to get crushed when stepped on. A capped empty water bottle on the ground is a huge tripping hazard to thousands of dancing fools as the cap holds the air in. At dreamville they sold the same water bottles as tomorrowland, so we would just take a single cap in the festival, and capped waterbottles when we bought them. This helps you in a few ways. You have to buy the waterbottle, but there are areas to refill water for free. Soo walk over to the refilling station, refill your waterbottles, put them back in your backpack (capped) and carry on. Helps not pay 2$ per bottle of water throughout the day. Also, dancing with a capless waterbottle can get messy, if you forget you have it in your hand, which happened a lot.

SUPER IMPORTANT: BRING something UNIQUE. I lucked out and brought my California and US flag to Tomorrowland, and since there were so few americans there, people often shouted USA! USA! as I walked by. I saw a group of australian girls walking around with and dancing with an inflatable Kangaroos, some Norweigan dudes with a huge inflatable penis, I saw a guy dancing with a flower pot.. costumes of all kinds, elaborate face paintings, crazy outfits etc. Basically, you want to bring something that is unique, especially rolling solo, it will help you meet sooo many new people. It will also make random conversations so much easier.

There will be some super big names at the main stage, but make an effort to check out the smaller stages and smaller names. At tomorrowland the stage work (all stages) was ridiculously awesome. I'm sure it will be the same at TomorrowWorld.

Prepare to get wet. Seriously. It MIGHT rain, you might get beer/water spilled on you.. you might jump in a lake. you just dont know. I used a sandwich bag (that I kept in my toiletry bag to make sure shampoo/toothpaste didnt explode on the flight) to keep my cellphone/wallet in. There are also neck wallets. See below

Your choice to do this. I brought a little underarmour Sackpack. not a full backpack, but just a small thing. I kept my wallet, cellphone, flags, and extra waterbottles in there. I also had a lot my tokens in there.
I saw a lot of Italians with neckwallets, something like this http://www.amazon.com/GSI-Waterproof-Necklace-Underwater-Swimming/dp/B0039L1Z24/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1408646917&sr=8-2&keywords=neck+wallet+waterproof if you dont wanna wear a backpack and keep it minimal. I would avoid doing the standard wallet in back pocket.. just because there will be a LOT of people dancing all up on you, and there is a SLIGHT chance of pickpockets.

IF it rains, it will also get muddy. Not sure of the groundwork at Tomorrowworld, but there will definitely be mud at the campsite. Simple grocery plastic bags and duct tape will make easy shoe covers if you need.

Take pictures, bring a gopro WITH A STICK, take video. I regret not taking more video and pictures at Tomorrowland, I won't make that mistake at TomorrowWorld. You will seriously meet some awesome people. If you take a picture with someone, and you want to .. stay in contact.. GET THEIR DAMN NAME. I'm still subscribed to the Tomorrowland Weekend 2 fb page, and every other hour is someone posting a picture with a person/persons with a caption "Does anyone know who these guys/girls are?!?1 they were sooo awesome blah blah blah, I forgot their names, blah blahblah, please help me find them!!!"

The big artists will perform towards the evening-end of night at the mainstage every night. while its super awesome to be in middle/front of the stage area when they are playing, move to the rear at the end of the last performer's set. Example: Steve Aoki is fucking badass, and closed out sunday night. We were in front most of the time during his set, but we knew he was finishingin like 15min, so we moved towards the back, and we got in position about 5 min till. which was perfect, because thats when the ridiculous fireworks/light shows/madness really started. and We had such a perfect view, and it was a lotttt less crowded, and the pictures captured the full madness of fireworks, a sea of dancing people etc.

That's it for now, I'm drunk, feel free to ask any questions

The best thing you can do is go though this subreddit and filter to show 'newest'. Read and absorb.

Energy: pace yourself. Disco naps are your friend. Do not rush over to the Festival at noon. This is a good time to enjoy your camp area, take a shower and get ready. We typically didn't hit the Festival until 4ish. Be in shape to walk 10 miles over 4 days. That is what my wife's Ped said and she didn't arrive until Friday afternoon.

Where to crash: I'll chime in also on the Easy Tents option. Next year, we are going with an ET "comfort" upgrade. Rather Pricey, but it is in an even more exclusive and non crowded area (tents sleep 4 and are raised on platforms). http://www.tomorrowworld.com/dreamville/dream-lodges

There were some crowding issues in ET, especially at the lone food stand and the showers (the bathrooms were not homestyle but 4 steps above porta potty quality). Take some easy stuff to make a breakfast (tortillas, egg whites in a carton and some precooked sausage make a great breakfast taco) for about 20 people and you will have 20 friends for life :)

If you are going to stay in Dreamville, you should drive from Chatt Wed night and crash somewhere on the south side of Atlanta. Get in line as early as possible (Think they opened for Dreamville campers @ 10a). If you don't get on the grounds by 2PM, expect a 4-8 hour wait to be assigned your camping area. Yes, it was THAT BAD this year and will not improve unless TW does pre assigned and chalked off spaces.

Performers: yeah catch some of the superstars. But the real fun and vibe (and safety from pickpockets) are at the smaller stages. You can actually talk to people!

Security: TW is now an official thief magnet. We had no issues with theft in ET and we never really used the lock. We were fortunate to be in an area where several security were stationed, and near part of the regular walk route from staff.

Solutions: rent a locker and keep your electronics and most of your 'party favors'. You can rent one either outside the festival or inside (but you won't have access to it except from noon-close each night.) Do NOT use a back pack or one of those flimsy droopy packs. They get cut by the Gypsies, tramps and thieves that prey on the party crowd. Get a bandolier, or a sling pack that rests on your lower front pocket area, or just make sure you don't bring anything you don't want to lose. Many phones are lost so you may want to use a lanyard http://www.amazon.com/Amzer-Detachable-Cell-Phone-Lanyard/dp/B002Z7ELJM

I got one of these and it also works well for my legal concealed weapon (obviously no weapons are allowed at TW!) I had no issues with anyone trying to grab my bag, but I did give a few nasty glares at guys who were 'brushing' my empty back pocket.

A bandolier works well and you can put LED lights on it to make a 'style statement'

http://www.amazon.com/CrossPaq-Everyday-Passport-Checkbook-Business/dp/B00ACHD4VI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0CMFT8E42GGSSF2FR3Y1

Disclaimer: I do not work for Amazon, I just shop there.

Customer Service: Everyone on the TW staff has probably worked 30 hours that week before the gates open. A friend "bar tended" from Wed night to Sunday night, averaging 14 hour days. They did have a camp and made $25 an hour, but by Sunday most of them were zombie level exhausted. Most of them are local scene kids. Do not expect shiny happy faces if you have some issues. Just try to be patient and persistent. Someone will eventually deal with your situation.

Wristband: they have a cool wristband that looks like a leather strap wrist watch, only with the TW logo where the face goes. Do not take a shower with it on, as it sometimes won't work in some places. Take it off only for your showers or immersion in water and NEVER LOSE IT or give it to someone else.

About party enhancers: Don't do drugs, m'k? 'Cause drugs are bad. But if you insist on making your experience as fun as you can take this advice from someone 'old and sick' on how to make it through this situation. Rule 1: never buy or take anything from someone you don't know. The reasons are pretty obvious. Bring your own, and stash it well. Try to avoid bulk products and work on concentrates. Dog's can't smell 'em and neither can security. When it comes to festivals with strict security, everyone is much happier with vapes than with blunts. Bring a little more of your favorites than you can do to share with neighbors. Once a bond of trust is established, then you are free to sample other's bounty. Remember, enhancements are a sacrament and intended to create community. Be discreet, don't spunion out, and maintain awareness of your surroundings. Oh, and avoid alcohol. Seriously, stick to other things and you will be amazed at how many extra hours of partying you can save. If you have to drink, wait until dark. Take it from a man who runs a rave club that sells alcohol; you are better off with other stuff, given the outdoor setting.

Other: totems and flags. Make a totem. Bring an expandable or break down style flag pole and bring the flag of choice (this year I brought a United States of Peace flag and made a fall theme totem of PVC and LED). Make kandi, buy some cheap beads, and randomly gift people. Never charge for any transaction and never pay for a gift. Avoid crowds of pretty people. I'm sure you've seen enough of that 'high class' entitlement crowd at Ultra.

I'm going to be all over the place with this, as I'm trying to cook dinner at the same time....so...sorry.

First thing that I say is no matter what you bring, make sure that you have a way to transport it easily. Use hiking packs, hand trucks, and/or a wagon. You think you can carry stuff....but man, after a mile and a half, that shit gets heavy. I made one trip with my stuff in my hiking pack, set up my tent, threw my stuff inside and headed back to the car. I put 2 cases of beer and a case of water in my backpack. I almost didnt' make it back to camp.

My roommate and I both are pretty decent welders/fabricators and are already working on a sweet wagon design to carry a bunch of shit...and morph into a table/bench of sorts.

Next, bring a tent with a good rain fly, and a tarp to put the tent on. It gets really damp at night, so you'll be glad to have these two things.

I will be bringing a 10x10 EZ up tent this year, for sure. We had one for about 15 people and...well...we needed more. It's awful nice to get out of the sun for a little while during the day.

Bring food that is easy to make...sandwiches, chips, etc. The food there is really expensive...and it's nice to be able to do some things on the cheap.

Well, the security was pretty lax last year. A guy I camped with brought a full coleman stove....we had eggs and bacon one morning and it was wonderful.

Don't forget folding chairs either. You'll need those fo sho.

Consider bringing some ear plugs....as some people like to bump tunes late into the night. I used some shooting earmuffs. I looked like a fool, but I was the only person in the group that didn't have a problem sleeping.

I'm going to be purchasing one of these to keep the group's phones charged. It has 2 USB ports and worked like a champ. Nobody ever had any shortage of battery.

Bring a couple coolers. One to keep stuff in...and one that just has ice. The ice there is pretty damn expensive too...but...it sure beats warm beer.

I'm sure I'll come back to write more....

Fuck....I can't wait.

I bought this one for EDC Vegas and love it. I like it because of the chest strap, which helps for when you are moving around and the cell phone pouch. Also another important factor was the ability to lock it with a small luggage lock. you can lock the zipper part to the top hook area, which helps stop cell/wallet theft. I usually refill twice a night with moderate usage by my friends. Do note, I only paid $60 and the price looks to have gone up...

I got this solar charger. 23000mAh. So far I've charged 3 gopro batteries, one VTC4, and my iphone and the 100% charge light on the unit hasn't even turned off. This thing is awesome so far.

Poweradd™ Apollo Pro 23000mAh High Capacity Solar Panel Multi... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F4KBA3M/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_BdYhub00RTQJF

Then I got this 18650 charger. Works well but it took 3 hours to charge one battery. And when I checked it, the battery was at 4.22 volts. Kinda makes me nervous but I'll keep an eye on them.

XTAR MP1S Intelligent USB 14650/17670/18650/18700 Battery Charger(No adaptor) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AIG8Q7U/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_shYhub03V9GBS

I has two other Xtar chargers and they're amazing. So I trust the company.

I'm thinking about building my own solar power generator using 'B' grade solar cells from eBay (<$1/watt) and a ~$100 12V deep cycle battery (an understanding of electronics and soldering is required to DIY), but as a solo attendee, I'm a little concerned about transporting 'too much stuff' from my car to Dreamville in a small collapsible cart as well as my 'footprint' as a single attendee (in a 5'x7' tent with privacy shelter/shower).

If you interested in the technical details, I'm looking at 2 or 3 ~60-65W panels and a ~10mAH battery. Total weight should be about 40-50lbs with panels, mounting frame and battery. Total cost for DIY: ~$300-400 plus 12-36hrs of assembly time.

The solar array 'frame' is another concern - I considered building a PVC frame covered by a solar reflective tarp around my tent to block that ugly morning sun/heat, but if I plan to integrate a solar array into the frame, my PVC must be strong enough (and pointed in the correct direction to collect sunlight) to support my array.

I already have a schaumacher xp2260, but I want to make sure that I have enough juice for 4 nights.

I've been thinking about this problem for a month so I'm anxious to hear some input from 'festival veterans'.

I haven't tried it myself, but what about layering ear protection?
Maybe good foam earplugs but then some earmuffs like construction workers use:

u/cumbuttons · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

Shoe inserts! I've had better luck with the foam than gel personally, but others prefer gel. I wear some cheapy boots that can get muddy and dusty, and put a new pair of inserts in each day. My shoes have basically no support or cushioning but they are fine with the inserts.

These are boots I wear (I'm a girl)

My group bought this last year and worked perfectly, but it was also only $30 then. We just hammered PVC in the ground to secure it.

Sadly you missed out on the sweet deal I got at REI for an monster igloo glide cooler, it's a REALLY nice cooler.

http://www.amazon.com/Igloo-Glide-Cooler-110-Quart-White/dp/B004XUNDX4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404679823&sr=8-1&keywords=igloo+glide+110+quart+cooler is extremely similar, just different color.

I really like mine, its very sturdy. Don't forget to pack your dry ice in multiple ziplock bags because water + dry ice = fog+air pressure.

u/hartfordsucks · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

And try and make it fairly decent cart at that. There were people dragging some cheap Walmart pieces of shit and a lot of them didn't last long. After you've made 2-3 trips from the parking lot to Dreamville you'll be glad you didn't a few extra bucks to buy something sturdy.

Also, bring things to keep things strapped to your cart. Best "why didn't I think of that" idea that I saw: some guy brought a handheld stretch wrapper (like this). Him and his buddies piled everything on a quality hand truck (which I'd also recommend over anything but maybe this) and then he wrapped the whole hand truck in stretch wrap. Nothing fell off and more importantly no one asked him to unwrap it.

Remember kids, you get what you pay for and getting in/setting up at festivals is a pain enough as it is, you don't want to have to be fighting with your own gear too.

u/MicFury · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

Get one or two of these and be sure to charge it in advance, leave it in the sun, and leave your phones in APM when you know you're not going to be using data. You'll make it through the whole fest no prob.

u/MusicFestivalGoer · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

I got this: http://www.amazon.com/Flagpole-To-Go-14-Foot-Portable/dp/B000OWKELO

EDIT: When they say no metal poles this will still be allowed right? It's lightweight aluminum, but the whole thing is barely a pound.

u/dzfast · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

I'll lay out how it was done last year for you.

The sooner you got there, the closer you were to the camping entrance both in parking AND campground. Until the parking filled up, then you could be closer yet to the dreamville entrance AND the festival entrance (they kept the closest parking lot to the campground closed at first).

They would not let you move past rope lines in the campground for setting up camp until all the space they had opened was full.

BRING A WAGON WITH AIR FILLED WHEELS.

By the end of the walk from the car to where we set up our tent my wife was in tears. It felt like some kind of death march. We only had one of these and it is NOT good enough.

u/ThePhog08 · 1 pointr/TomorrowWorld

I have this one, the whole thing is ridiculously lightweight and it collapses. It also has rubber stoppers on the ends. No problems at other fests, hope they allow it
