I bought a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50xyears ago and still love them. I think they’re a great starting point for people who want to get into higher end headphones without breaking the bank (~$140) and want something you can just plug into your computer/phone headphone jack and get reasonably good sound.

I think the real sweet spot for price/performance starts at $400-$500. Audio quality is determined by the weakest link in your audio chain e.g. you can have a really nice pair of headphones that don’t end up sounding that great because your laptop or phone has a low quality DAC/headphone amp.

What I bought/recommend after spending dozens of hours doing research on /r/headphones and /r/audiophile is:

Schiit Modi 3 ($99) - This is the Digital Analog Converter or DAC. This converts digital music stored as 1s and 0s into an analog sound wave we can hear.

Schiit Magni 3 ($99) - This is a headphone amp that takes the analog sound wave from the DAC and amplifies it to your desired volume.

Sennheiser HD6xx ($220) - These are a stunningly good deal for headphones. They are a version of Sennheisers legendary HD600/HD650 series of studio monitors made in partnership with MassDrop for $120 less than a regular pair of HD650s on Amazon.

This is a really respectible setup for $420. All the components are very popular entry-level audiophile components and I’m sure there are thousands of people with this exact setup.

It’s important to note that this is not a portable setup at all and has to be plugged into a wall to work. This doesnt do much good if you do most of your listening on the go while traveling/commuting. I think you the Sony WH-1000MX3you said you tried are the best bang for your buck if you want wireless headphones to use with your phone on the go. I do not own these (yet) but plan to buy them next time I have a long flight, and I think they are currently the best noise-cancelling headphones on the market.

There are lots of good options out there, although I’d avoid the trendy brands like Bose and especially Beats.

I am going to be using this article plus my own personal experiences in the 7 years I have been collecting: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-turntables

Turntable: Audio-Technica ATLP120USB Direct Drive Professional USB Turntable Price $229.00 (On Sale at the time of this writing) it comes with a built in Pre-Amp so you are good to go. This is one I have been eyeballing myself.

Amplifier: Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver Price $149.95 (On sale at the time I am writing this). This is the one I personally use and I love it. It has multiple channels so you can allow for growth. For example I got a stereo cd player at the local thrift store I am trying to upgrade. I just need RCA Cables to hook it up which I do.

Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-T15-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B002RJLHB8/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Price $49.98 (Sale at the time I am writing this)

Wire from speakers to Amp: AmazonBasics 100ft 16-Gauge Audio Stereo Speaker Wire Cable - 100 Feet Price $13.49

Headphone Adapter (Trust me you'll need this if you want to listen to music via headphones) Adapter Price: $7.99

Subtotal: $450.41‬ plus taxes. I think you have wiggle room on the speakers, but I searched for high rated ones. If you need help setting up your Turntable and Stereo please feel free to reach out and I can help! :D

Opiate: $12.59
Lost my first copy I got at a record store in the 90's, re-bought this on Amazon.

Undertow: [$16.98](http://www.amazon.com/Undertow-Vinyl-Tool/dp/B000000992/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346420953&sr=8-1&keywords=tool+vinyl
&qid=1346420953&sr=8-4&keywords=tool+vinyl)
I bought in '95 at a local record shop in PA. Easily available on Amazon.

Ænima:$300 / $50
Original prints are $300+ on Ebay
The knockoff that I have sell cheaper on Ebay

Lateralus: $38.99
bought from ToolArmy, didn't have the cash to get the $150 signed one
at the time. Not too expensive on Ebay right now.

10,000 Days: $49.99
Never released by the band only knockoffs available on Ebay

Salival: $69.99
Also never officially released. I don't have one of these, but knockoffs available on Ebay. Too expensive for a knockoff. I'm happy just having my original VHS copy.

$238.54 gets you all the knockoffs. If you want the 4 originals it'll be $368.56

Hope that helps.

if you're on the floor, anywhere below row 10, you're gonna want to use protection (heh) - ive been using EarPeace for years at various venues and absolutely love them. They bring the music down to a reasonable decibel, without losing fidelity.

Plus, the added bonus of not getting tinnitus for days after is great. You'll also be able to hear what those around you are saying to you!

u/Usefulidiot84 · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

I've used these for years and I've never left a concert with ringing ears. These lower the volume without muting all the sounds like traditional foam ear plugs. For a child you my want to go foam earplugs or over the ear ones.

Edit: just saw he was 19 so yeah I really recommend these for both of y’all. There clear discreet and still allow you to enjoy the music without the side affects

u/ChaseKendall1 · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Not sure if you’ve got an original or why it was so expensive but I’ve seen re-issue laturalus picture disc gatefolds for $30-$40 at local record stores and guitar centers. I found one for $28 on amazon.
You could get a record frame for $15 at a craft store like michaels or Joan’s.
Still really cool though!!!

I would recommend Audio Technica M50x. The best bang for the buck headphone imo and a very popular choice for many budget audiophiles including myself.

u/climbon321 · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

For anyone looking for a copy I'm pretty sure they're still printing it (along with Undertow and Lateralus, unlike Ænima). You can get it on Amazon for pretty cheap.

Unleashed: The Story Of Tool (Omnibus Press Presents) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1780381514/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tT5.Ab16QHS3K
This book is really good. Has a very thorough history of the band including a surprising amount of detail about each of their childhoods
Strongly recommend

Say what?! I'm located in Germany and just found the Amazon pre-order page for the physical copy. Now I have questions:

  1. Why does it come as 2 CDs if it only has 7 tracks?

  2. I sure as shit hope this isn't the final price. 100 fucking €? Yes, I've waited 13 long years for this album, but I'm not paying that kind of money for a CD. Just to be clear: 100 € is 112 $. In the US the CD is currently only 45 $.
u/sparks1988 · 1 pointr/ToolBand

My wife didn't like them at first. I started with the radio songs and they didn't really click with her until I took her to a TOOL show. Now she's been to the last 5 or 6 shows that I've been to. She likes them so much that she plays the rockabye lullabies to her 5th grade class (shes a teacher). My hope is she's secretly getting the next generation of tool fans hooked.

The sound is fantastic, they have an amazing engineer to dial it in. Do yourself a favor and invest in some decent earplugs. As others have stated, it's exceptionally loud. My chest was sore after the Denver show...those subwoofers are no joke.

I'd recommend either of these...they will attenuate the sound, but not muffle it:

Eargasm

Etymotic Research

u/manycactus · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Personally, I'm an Earpeace HD fan. I use the standard filter. They're comfortable and have good sound quality. In any case, wear your damn ear plugs.

u/Strychnidin · 10 pointsr/ToolBand

These are amazing. I used to be highly against earplugs before I discovered these after messing up hearing in my right ear. I never go without them now. The next best thing are custom fit earplugs that you can obtain from an audiologist, but I believe those are about 200$. Anyways, I find that shows sound better with the Etymotic's.

u/fungoid_sorceror · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Assuming it's her first kid, there's a very good chance that the actual birth will be 1-2 weeks after the official due date.

Also, congrats!

Sexual favors aside, I would want This. HOWEVER, most people are not rich, so I'm just gonna say get him a record player, and some of the vinyls, some beer/wine from Caduceus cellars/whatever he drinks, and a shirt (you can never have too many, but if he has some already, try to get one that looks moderately different from the others, such as a white one or one with an entirely different design). All in all, this gift should run in at about $100-150, depending on what you get specifically. Hope this helps

Yes. It’s legit. Not sure why some of you are seeing Bieber referenced in the link. I’ve already received my confirmation email from Amazon. - Fear Inoculum Amazon Pre-Order

u/Dane_Brass_Tax · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Did the FI CD cost you something like $45/50 bucks?

Is there any real news on the re-presses of their older albums, in the future?

Also OP, might wanna snag this while you're at it.

10,000 Days album cover

Seeing as that's the cover for one of their albums, it's reasonable to assume it's possibly Tool related. The back of the album continues the artwork as you can see the top half of the tattoo image as the back cover.

  1. I’ve seen them 24 times from Coast to Coast (in the US at least) and have never paid anywhere close to $200 for a ticket. Including a show at a small NY Opera house on the 10K Days mini-tour where I was greeted by a tux-wearing usher and had to check my coat at the door.

  2. Radiohead and Beyoncé (among others) - 2 of the biggest names in music whether we want to admit it or not - have both dropped brand new albums with NO prior warning, marketing or announcement of any kind. Tool announced the release date months in advance and even told fans in advance that new music was going to be played on the tour that just completed.

  3. Here is Lateralus Vinyl for under $30:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005BGV2

    Undertow Vinyl for $25:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000000992/

    Opiate Vinyl for $9:
    https://www.amazon.com/Opiate-Ep-Tool/dp/B00000098N

  4. The setlist from this most recent tour contained 11-13 songs depending on if it was a festival gig or not.

Of those 11-13 songs - TWO were brand new tracks, ONE was a brand new drum solo, and THREE others (Intolerance, Sweat, and Part of Me) have been extremely rare cuts over the last decade (or more).

So going into the most recent tour, chances were 100% that out of the 11-13 songs they were going to play, you were going to get no less than 3 new songs you’d never heard before (period) and almost 100% that you’d get a 4th song you’d at least never heard live before.

  5. Now get off your f’ing soapbox. We need the f’ing space to nail the next fool poster.

I preordered from the links on here from amazon

Note that that's in USD initially and postage is a lot as I assume it's coming from the us

Edit: just checked my reciept and its 58 AUD for the album and 30 AUD for postage. Itll probably take a week or two to get to me but I'll be able to stream from day dot so I'm not hugely concerned about the wait

That’s the amazon link I ordered from. You can read the discretion & see if you like it. You don’t get charged until it’s sent to you. Guessing if they release a better deal with vinyl you can get that and cancel CD? Not sure how many of these “limited edition CDs” they’re releasing.
