The Gens Ace battery I bought is a 2s 5000mah 50c. I'm not a lipo expert but I have had different lipos with different c ratings. Im not sure what impact it has on the battery. But don't worry about it. I would try to get something between 20 and 50c, you should be fine.

And yes, you will need a charger. When I bought my first lipo I almost made the mistake by charging it with the stock wall charger

Here are some links to Amazon. I have owned all these battery's and charger

This is my Gens Ace lipo, just bought it a week ago. Seems fine:

This is my venom lipo. Great brand, just pretty expensive:

Venom 25C 2S 5000mAh 7.4V Hard Case LiPo Battery with Universal Plug (EC3/Deans/Traxxas/Tamiya) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YNQXGO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jf7DybTY2S501

This is my charger. Great charger, kinda out dated but works fine:

I would also recommend getting a lipo bag. Lipo batteries tend to do catch on fire, but none of mine have. I would still get one just in case. Just out your battery in it when you charge it and store it. Here's the link for one:

Generic CoBean Silver Large Size Lipo Battery Guard Sleeve/Bag for Charge & Storage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HTH78W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4h7DybR76NC3S

Other than that, post when you get your battery and charger so we can help you out on setting everything up. Just make sure you get a 2s. 3s is crazy. Also if your going to be driving on the street, make sure you got a pair of road tires because the battery will tear up your off road tires. Other than that, have fun!

I wouldn't go too crazy on motors for the old stampede. With a good brushed motor and a decent ESC, you can handle any 2s LiPo that will fit and have lots of fun. You'll need a LiPo charger though. If you are thinking of getting both RC's running, it will be worth it. I have several of these 2S batteries with excellent results:

Charger:

For a 2wd vehicle, I tend to use something like the Castle sidewinder 3:
http://www.castlecreations.com/en/sidewinder-3

If works with brushless and brushed motors, but you'll need the programming card or USB programmer to switch modes:
https://www.amazon.com/Castle-Creations-CSE011-0119-00-Link-Programming/dp/B0716SH9V8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=castle+field+link&qid=1564593156&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-3

How good are you at soldering? You'll either need to switch connectors on the ESC's or batteries or buy adapters. You local hobby store might be able to help with changing connectors. It's better to avoid connectors if you can.

In the short run the Lipo will give you more punch and then you can mess with gearing. With the eventual upgrade to a brushless system.

But for the long run, I recommend this charger

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758FGPQX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

If your able, have your Traxxas connectors replaced with a deans or xt60 or xt90

SMC has awesome batteries at a great price, never had any issues with them and I always heard good things about them.

I had a Traxxas ID charger and I didn’t like being limited to Traxxas batteries, too pricey for what they offer

thanks! I used this stuff minus the primer:

https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Masters-Effects-Oxidizing-2-Ounce/dp/B01LWT0Q5R/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1486586071&sr=8-12&keywords=modern+metals

I have re-done this 3 times now though in order to add a LOT more rust. Almost the entire body is covered at this point, and it's blended a lot better too. I had to work on painting technique a little before I got it just right. I have a little more body work to do, adding a few more details to make it look more patchwork. Once it's all done I plan on adding more pics. Hopefully by the end of the week.

The Traxxas ID charger can charge normal Lipo batteries as well as the Traxxas ID batteries. On the front of the charger there should be a little plastic cover, pop that off and it has the balance leads for a 2 and 3 cell lipo. As long as your non Traxxas batteries have a Traxxas plug it'll charge normal lipos. As for recommendations i personally use this and have about 50 runs on it and it still performs great.

As mentioned, $300 isn’t quite enough for 4x4. This is the Stampede you’d be looking at.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9XWU6U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KKuTCbDQH7BQY

And the Rustler

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JZKJQT5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xLuTCb04BR1DC

Alternatively, you could pick up an Arrma Granite 4x4. I have the brushless version of this truck and it’s ok. I kinda wish I got the Stampede, though.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077PC2DDD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ZPuTCbWVF1MB4

For a charger, you could get this little guy for $30 which is a great budget charger.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07751LCYB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.LuTCbFR31K36

And SMC makes great batteries at a low cost. This one is just under $40.

Okay, I just googled the a arms I ordered and it says e rustler and stampede ones. I cant find nitro rustler ones for some reason. I guess that was my issue. I google nitro rustler a arms and only the electric ones and stampede ones show up. I see nothing about nitro ones. But here is what I got for front a arms:
https://www.amazon.com/RPM-70669-Traxxas-Rustler-Stampede/dp/B010AWZH28

And this is what the ones I have now look like. These are the old ones that came with the truck when I got it used:

I just bought a second Stampede 4x4 vxl and the SMC 3s 5000mAh fit's perfect with the Traxxas 6727X Battery Expansion Kit. For more run time you can fit higher mAh batteries with the expansion kit as well.

Edit: I just checked SMC Racing and they are out of 3s 5000mAh but have the 5400mAh and higher batteries available. I'd go with the 5400mAh unless you want more run time.

More mAh = more weight = more broken parts so it's a balance between preferable run time and how hard you intend to bash your RC.

I also suggest getting the Traxxas 6893X Aluminum Bearing Adapter becasue you will burn through the stock plastic one running LiPo.

Edit: there are other batteries that are viable as well. Someone will chime in with other legitimate choices.

Lower spring retainer.

PROLINE 117014 Trencher 2.8 Traxxas Style Bead All Terrain Tires https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NNRZL06/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KhExDbGY987V0

You have to use the same dimension front/rear for the 4x4. And the pinion gear is different for the 4x4. They recommend an 11t for the 2wd but the 4wd comes with the 11t stock so I went with the 9t which is the smallest you can jam into a slash 4x4 vxl.

You also need the body lift. I chose the proline there too as it has screw caps vs the clips. I also threw on the big bite shocks because the stock plastic ones blew the caps. And now I’m adding a heavy duty slipper clutch because of riding on pavement.
