Coming from the original Vive and paying $750 for the headset/controller combo, I think it depends on what you want out of the upgrade, and a lot of areas the headset was upgraded (or downgraded) in will impact individual people differently, which is why reviews and opinions are all over the place.

Some people aren't sensitive to framerate and don't notice the jump to 144 Hz. For others, it's night and day. I'm in between. I definitely notice the world feeling more present at 144 Hz, but it's not a dramatic upgrade for me.

Myself and I think most people have hands in the size and shape range the controllers support. Some don't. Most of the issues now are QC or software related, and I expect them to be solved.

For some people the lighter black level is a deal breaker. For others, it's not a big deal. I'm in the middle there. We know the screen is capable of better contrast and color saturation, so those should get fixed in time and improve the perceived black level. For now, I'll probably be staying away from the darkest games. Luckily I don't like horror. A few of the games I was worried about, like Elite Dangerous, still seem to look pretty good since they still keep a lot of light areas in your view.

>EDIT: I removed the original protective film (which I left on intentionally until getting this in), and the contrast and colors are definitely more vibrant than I was expecting. I really didn't expect the film to have that much of an impact. I'm definitely leaning toward the "it's not a big deal" camp now.

I think the off ear speakers are amazing. I've seen a few who aren't impressed though. I think anyone who thinks they aren't loud enough probably needs to get their hearing checked (and I'm not being facetious), or there's some hardware conflict going on like the guy who mentioned Nvidia drivers.

The increased clarity due to the resolution, RGB subpixels, SDE, and the lenses is a definite improvement over the 1st gen headsets. Rather than just looking better, it actually makes a functonal difference in games where you are trying to aim more precisely, read text in a UI, etc. and I think this alone justifies the upgrade for me. I think the only complaints I've seen come from Vive Pro users with the Gear VR lens mod.

Overall, I think the headset is a great upgrade from the gen 1 headsets, and I'm not going back. However, if you want to recapture the magic of stepping into VR the first time, which is the level I think a lot of people here were hyping themselves up for, I don't think any headset will make that possible outside of a fundamental change in the physical experience like force feedback.

3d printable frunk fan stl file
I used tinkercad to mod the original file, (it took hours to do) it’s designed to suck air out of the headset using a Noctua NF-A4x10 5V, Premium Quiet Fan
The heat isn’t that bad but after a hour of playing it starts getting pretty warm, the fan should be really quiet and the lens cover will still go on to keep the appearance of a stock headset (I might have to add 4 small 3x3mm magnets to keep the cove gap big enough for airflow)

Edit
I’m still waiting on the 5 volt noctua fan from Amazon, it should be here In 2 days I will update this post with temperature improvements and overall review.

Edit
I got the noctua 5v fan installed and it works good, I can hear it running when I’m on steamvr home and there’s no background noise but in game I can’t hear it at all.
The airflow is very gentle, I can only feel it on my eyeballs if I open them fully and lift the bottom of the hmd to increase the gap around my big nose.
The hmd stays cooler, I feel like I can play for extended periods of time easily.

Edit
I just played blades and sorcery for 40 minutes it still got hot and sweaty in the hmd, I’m hot sure if 2 fans would be better or just dry out your eyes? Maybe the best option is still a room fan, shorts, and no shirt lol

Let me just start off by saying, even with just the few hours I've played with it, I LOVE this thing. Thank you valve for making such an awesome piece of hardware. And yes, my unit does have the joystick issue but it's just the feedback that's broken. My joysticks otherwise register without issue.

But anyways onto the good stuff.

What?

A 20m (65ft) cable run from my desk to right under the couch, so that the only hookup is the breakout / trident cable.

Why?

In my place, I ran into the predicament of the only space I had room to do VR was the living room, but given that putting my entire desk in the living room would have been weird aesthetically, I opted for the cable run, to get VR from the PC in the room across the house to my living room.

What parts?

Pretty simple actually, but it did require 2, not exactly cheap cables, and one coupler (prices in US Dollar).

  • ATZEBE DP Fiber Cable 60ft [$107.99 - Amazon]
  • SIIG USB 3.0 Active Repeater 20m [$115.99 - Amazon]
  • Poyicott DP to DP Coupler [$9.99 - Amazon]
  • (Optionally) 50 count cable ties [$7.99 - Amazon]

The DP - DP coupler is out of necessity, given that no link box exists with the Index. Yes, it's an expensive solution. In addition to the $999 headset, I've spent another ~$231 on cable runs. But for my situation, it works flawlessly.

If you are thinking you need a solution like that, and any of the cables are unavailable (the DP cable is out of stock as of writing on July 6th), make sure to get fiber if you can for the sake of not losing quality over a copper cable. As for the USB cable, you're looking for an active cable. These typically have external power bricks to supply additional 5V power that your tower cannot do over such a distance. Edit: _However_, I have found that plugging in the additional power causes the computer to have issues recognizing any USB device, so I guess don't do that if you buy the same cable. Other cables may vary.

    How is it setup?

I have the cables running along the basebords of the house, from my computer all the way to the living room. They take a right angle, and are gaff-taped down to the floor before running under the couch where they can become a loose coil [pic].

    Does it work?

In a word, yes! I will update this comment if I run into reliability issues down the line, but it seems that this system works well enough, and has the added bonus of not hearing the PC fans spinning given the off-ear design of the Index headphones. (Edit: The only pitfall is that sometimes you have to power cycle the headset once or twice to get SteamVR to see it, but that doesn't take long. After that it's smooth sailing!)

Hope this helps anyone that might be needing a similar setup!

(EDIT: Numerous edits for spelling / grammar)

u/captroper · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

Yeah, i had this one set up downstairs until I got the wireless adapter. It's not perfect, but it is a huge improvement over the cable being on the floor. Apart from the obvious never tripping on it (that rarely happened anyways) it's pretty helpful for doing full circles, like when going up a staircase in skyrim for instance. With the distance that I had in my room there was a bit of tugging when I got close to the boundaries, but otherwise it worked pretty well.

I would like to share that these items have worked for extending the Index on my particular rig:

StarTech Active DisplayPort Repeater : https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IE3IAIS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

15' DisplayPort Cable: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y1QP9FV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

15' Active USB 3.0 Cable: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C2KWVG1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I doubt it makse a big difference in relation to the DisplayPort, but the video card I am using on this rig: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GJKR7RW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I originally tried a 6' male to female DisplayPort extender, but could see 'sparkles' in the HMD. Once I added the active repeater, everything worked great - at 6' and 15'. I used the default adjustment on the repeater.

Outside of the brighter dark areas of the Index vs. other OLED HMDs (have a OG VIVE and Samsung Odyssey +), I absolutely love the Index!

Details
So a member of the Stress Level Zero team shared a now-pretty-popular image of his frunk fan mod using 40 mm computer fans to ventilate the Headset. I was inspired, so I went on a hunt for the quietest efficient fans I could fine, and that search led me to Noctua's 5V 40mm computer fans. They're listed at only 19.6 dBA (I'd say they're quieter than that - more like having a ceiling fan on in the room), and yet the can still move plenty of air at 5,000 rpm.
The original mod had the fans blowing cool, external air into the headset. I originally tried this and it left me very disappointed as I couldn't sense any air moving. The only time I did feel air moving was when I angled the fans to blow upward into the vents in the upper portion of the frunk, and it was hot air (which would be a disservice to the wearer, obviously). The only pro was that it cooled off the components.
So I simply flipped the fans over and it made a world of difference. There's a slight gap between the HMD and the face gasket at the nose (which does cause light bleed but with the lights off, who cares?), and with the fans sucking hot air out of the headset, a draft is created between the wearer and the inside of the headset, bringing in cool air around the nose and ventilating the inside of the headset. It also does a stellar job of keeping the components cool I've found. I spent about 4 hours in it at one time and not once did I get warm inside of it.

What I used:
Black Duct Tape
2x 40mm 5V Noctua Fans at 19.6 dBA (they're 4-pin but they include 4-pin F to USB M adapters with each fan)
4-pin Splitter Cable to join the two fans

What I would probably use instead:
A better mounting system than duct tape, for one
The same fans
This all in one 2 3/4-pin to USB splitter/adapter
This USB toggle switch to turn off the fans

I'm trying a 10ft starlink DP 1.4 rated cable and a f/f coupler. The cable doesn't arrive until tomorrow, but the coupler comes in today, so I'll try it with a cheap 6ft cable for fun.

I'll update with results after work (in ~6.5 hours from this post).

UPDATE 1 The f-f coupler works, even paired with a cheap.. no name brand of 6ft dp cable. (Came with some monitor, I think.). Tested 120hz, and 144hz modes. No issues, and I finally feel free to roam my space. :)

I'll update in 24 hours once I get my listed starlink 10ft cable tested.

UPDATE 2
I have had no luck with the StarLink DP 1.4 rated cables (neither the 6ft, or 10ft).
Both had random RGB pixel noise, and audio cutouts on occasion.

However, my amphenol 6ft cable (idk the brand, just the connectors are amphenol) works.. so I'm just using it. I'm sure it's not 1.4 rated.. but it's apparently got a bigger wire gauge and less loss through the cable.

This is tested with a non-OC Strix 1080, and both DP outputs exhibit the same issue.
Cable was tested straight (not coiled), and the connectors were reseated multiple times to ensure connection issues were not a factor.

Good luck to anyone pursuing this passive extension method.. seems like a crapshoot over what cable will/will not work.

So I have bad news to report. I have NOT been able to successfully run the Valve Index with extension cables.

I had the Vive Pro headset running FINE with the following setup

  1. On the PC side, Amazon Basic display port 15 feet cable (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J8S7EXU)

  2. Then a Cable Matters mini display port to display port adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNF0KF0) to connect to Vive Pro breakout box

Like I said this setup was working fine withe the Vive Pro.

With the Valve Index (which uses DP on BOTH sides), I tried the following configurations:

    Configuration 1:

  3. Same Amazon Basic display port 15 feet cable

  4. Then a Cable Matters 2-Pack DisplayPort to DisplayPort Coupler (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YFPM2CU) to the Valve Index DP

This results in NO image at all. It even crashes Steam VR! (some error message about enabling direct mode...). I have tried multiple refresh rate including 90Hz with the same result

    Configuration 2:

  5. Cable Matters DisplayPort to DisplayPort Extension Cable (DP to DP Extension Cable) 6 Feet (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L1K1G74) from the PC to the valve index

This time there is an image, BUT if you look at black areas you clearly see "sparkles" (like glitter) which clearly shows there is some degradation and/or noise. And it is only a 6Ft cable (which is too short for my setup but wanted to try it anyway).

So I am really bummed that the latest and greatest and expensive VR device REQUIRES you to be plugged into your PC directly and given the fact that the cable is just big enough for a 3mx3m area, that is quite frustrating... Supposedly the new base stations supports bigger play areas but I am not sure how this is possible since the cable wouldn't be long enough, unless your PC is inside the play area...

Index-Fan-Mount

3D printable files for a dual fan bracket for the front of the Valve Index

Design Notes:

This is built upon the Valve provided 3D model of the visor and is intended to provide a way to cool the headset and/or the user. No electronics are provided, however wiring of the fans is trivial and plenty of internal space is provided.

The fans slip into the slots on the top of the bracket and are retained by internal tabs. Optional caps, which are separate files, can be snapped onto the top to cover the gap to improve looks. The bracket itself utilizes the same locating pins of the stock visor, which means magnets must be used.

This was designed around the Noctua 40mm fans, which have rubber bumpers and are a little bit thiccer than standard 40mmx10mm fans. As such, if you use stock fans, you may find them to be a bit loose. Nothing a little double sided foam tape can't fix!

Finally, this does violate the Sensor Inclusion Zone of the Index, which means it could theoretically affect tracking performance. A photo showing this is in the root of this directory.

Printing Notes:

I would not recommend printing this using ABS, or any warp-prone filament. The locating pins of the Index are very small and very distant from each other, which means even a small amount of part warp will throw off the alignment. PLA or PETG would be my recommendation here. Of course, if it does warp, that double sided foam tape can save you once again.

This has a flat bottom and is designed to be printed "upright." It will still require supports, however none on visible surfaces.

BOM

You will need to print one of each file.

These are the recommended fans: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NEMGCIA/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_.JGiDbBDF39J2

Use 1/8"x1/8" axially magnetized cylinder magnets, such as K&J #D22-N52.

I have been struggling to find a cable extension solution for the PiMax since I got mine last month. I suspect the challenges with the Valve Index will be similar.

For the setup in my studio a 45ft extension is ideal. I've had HDMI and USB solved at that distance for years with the Vive and Oculus CV1. DisplayPort seems to be much more finicky, especially at high resolution and refresh rates.

So far the only cable I have tried that works consistently with all resolution and refresh rates is this 10ft extension from Cable Matters:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L1K1KDE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This 15ft Tripp Lite cable does work most of the time, but I have had a few instances where the headset would not initialize on startup trying to run the Large FOV at 90Hz. But when it has intialized it has worked fine:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B06Y45L3X3

Anything longer than that has not worked for me. Other people have reported success with these Delock extensions at 7.5m and 10m. I was able to get a German vendor to send them to me, and the 7.5m has worked a few times with the small FOV at 60Hz but nothing better than that and I never got the 10m to work at all.

https://www.delock.com/produkte/S_84906/merkmale.html

I've also tried active/optical cables with couplers but had no luck at all... I would be totally willing to pay the price for a cable like this if it worked, but in my testing it did not:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DFXVXSF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_aFzICb5ENJ14H

I even tried this StarTech active signal booster with no luck:

https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Signal-Booster-Video-Amplifier/dp/B01IE3IAIS

For reference, here is a thread about it on the PiMax forums:

u/kylebisme · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

A 3 meter passive extension on the USB is doable without any loss assuming the USB port on your PC puts out a strong signal and you have a high quality cable. For DisplayPort on the other hand the most I've seen anyone get working without issue using a passive cable is 2 meters, I use this one and others have reported success with it as well.

u/Gawdl3y · 8 pointsr/ValveIndex

I use this USB extender and this DisplayPort cable along with one of these DP couplers with no issues. The DisplayPort cable is like double the length I need, but the price difference between the 10m and 20m one was only like $10, so I couldn't justify buying the shorter one, haha. Perhaps the length may be useful in the future!

u/xfactoid · 4 pointsr/ValveIndex

Why do you need such an expensive solution for the DP extension? Shouldn't a regular extension cable like this work fine?

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Extension-Feet/dp/B00L1K1KDE

edit: is it just for the extra length? 10m/30ft+ is quite a lot, hope you are making good use of all that space ;)

LENS PROTECTORS:

I bought these for my and my wife's Vives in 2016 and they still are fantastic.

I've CRaMmeD my glasses up against the lenses, wipe them with my t-shirt ALL THE TIME to scrub them clean, they still look perfect.
I will be ordering this style again once we get a confirmed lens diameter.

Please consider these.

Good tips thanks! I’m planning on printing out pieces of paper with quick instructions. Wish the lab was piecemeal like robot repair (stand alone exe) - might be tricky to describe pulling the sphere toward your head...

Going to get these disposables

And now I’m contemplating a cable management system vs a foam floor (kids type with puzzle piece assembly). Gaffers tape around the foam floor. Then shoes off.

Lots of mixed reviews about cable management systems. I have essentially unlimited ceiling height, and am eying a swivel. I’m imaginging running a ratchet strap up across the play space (tight) and then attaching the swivel to the strap at midpoint and adding a block to the cable so it doesn’t slide through the swivel too far.

I posted this in another thread, but here you go:

For extension cabling:

I use a 30-foot fiber DisplayPort cable ($100) with a connector ($10) and a 30-foot powered USB extender cable ($40).

It's a pricy solution but it works perfectly.

u/bodaciousturnip · 3 pointsr/ValveIndex

You can get some cheap lighting stands that are typically used for filming, I ended up getting a pair specifically marketing the vive tracker boxes and they work great.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MFG14ZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As far as the height, it's recommended to have them above your head at least, however when I play BeatSaber I have one above my head and slightly to my left, and one around waist level slightly to my right.

They're also a little bit heavier than they look and they do heat up at times at least in my experiences, adhesives might not preform very well compared to securing them by other means

C2G 54451 6ft DisplayPort Male to Female Extension Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S8DDRNR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_d6ErDb6RBFJPR

Only 6ft and a little more expensive but it worked with my Index. Maybe the extra 4ft makes the difference or it’s just a higher quality cable. I’ve seen mixed results on other cables so no promises. Good luck.

u/Rand0mtask · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

I've got a 1080 as well! It runs just fine for me.

It's actually surprisingly simple once you have the cables. Active USB 3.0 andFiber optic displayport were what I used.

edit: sorry, hit save too fast

Once everything's plugged in, it runs the same as if you didn't have the extenders. The Steam Link has an actual VR mode built in. So I start VR first, then start the Steam Link, connect to the VR PC, and it starts mirroring the headset right away!

Edit 2: oh also you will need a male to male coupler for the displayport cable: like this one

u/center311 · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

It depends on the shape of the room, but I know people are fans of the contractor poles. They have a smaller footprint and are sturdier. Here's a link I found: https://basereality.co/blogs/guides/htc-vive-mounts-stands#tssktssk-contractor-pole-setup

Personally, I use generic cheapo tripods from amazon. This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MFG14ZT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Pros: Cheap, portable, easy to setup, works as intended, owned since day 1 Vive, and comes with a travel bag.

Cons: not sturdy if someone is walking around they start wobbling (which is not pleasant to experience while in VR), easy to bump into, and bigger footprint.

Edit: I have a Razer Blade 15 with a GTX 1070.

I have a ceiling fan overhead. So I bought a lighting boom and extend my cable overhead with that.

I attached this boom to this mount, to the top of my entertainment center. And then used the same cable management everyone sells... I grabbed this one.

u/cuppajoh · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

If you don't want to mess with your walls, a fine solution is to use tripods similar to the ones for photo lights. For my Vive I have these for my dorm's common room and they work just fine. When I'm home and I have less floor space in my room I use these clamps to secure the lighthouses to my closet door and lamp, and they're perfect. I actually prefer these over the tripods as there's no risk of knocking over a tripod.

I assume both products are compatible with the Index Lighthouses because afaik they use the same standard threaded mounts as the Vive.

u/Catalia · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

True, that's a good point. You NEED display port 1.4 so it can handle it.
Choose one that handle 4K/60Hz and you should be ok.

I bought this one to get an extra 6 feet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S8DDRNR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was listed as 8K UHD (7680 x 4320) resolution DP 1.4 while the other cheaper cables were 4K DP1.3. So far it works great.

Looking on amazon uk this is the only 8K DP1.4 I could find: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Club-3D-DisplayPort-Cable-Extension/dp/B07RJ13CH9/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=display+port+1.4+extension+cable+8K&qid=1562951293&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Just in case anyone checks back on this, after I updated to the latest Pimax software, the Delock cable stopped working reliably for me and I can only run at 64hz small FOV, and even then sometimes it does not recognize the headset. I ended up going with this 10ft cable matters extension which is just barely long enough for my needs but seems to work perfectly for my setup. Of course, not sure if it would work with the index.

The Index uses a breakaway cable that functions similarly to the linkbox.

To extend my play space, I use:
this DisplayPort cable (30 ft version): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QQQFWGT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this female-to-female DP adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YFPM2CU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and this USB cable (10 meter version): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076C6PDNH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use the DP & USB cables to extend the distance between my computer and the Index's breakaway cable (I also plug the breakaway cable and the USB cable into an extension cord plugged into an 120V outlet). Then, I plug the Valve Index, which has its own 15 foot cable, into the breakaway cable. In total, I've got about 46 feet of distance between my PC and my Index (30 (extension cables) + 15 (index cable) + 1 (breakaway cable)).

It's not any cheaper, but in case people are interested, StarTech sells a DP Booster box, you might be able to couple it with copper/"cheap" cables:

https://www.startech.com/AV/Extenders/dvi-dp/displayport-booster~DPBOOST

https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Signal-Booster-Video-Amplifier/dp/B01IE3IAIS

I work in consumer electronics, and the box is tunable. However, the practical limitation is probably in the 5m-10m range, and I'm guessing you won't be able to find passive cables in that length anyways... The benefit of buying one of these boxes is if your cable gets damaged, the replacement cable(s) would be cheaper... it'd be a long term cost analysis problem. The other benefit is that this box has switchable settings, so it can even be used with short cables - if you have any signaling problems in general, chances are that it could clean them up.

The reason for your wire not work with index is that the native resolution in index is 3k but vive just 2k.

Or you could try set the supersampling to 60% to test if the wire work.

It is the one we 've brought and work.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S8DDRNR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I highly recommend getting a Displayport to MiniDisplayport adaptor. It literally just changes the form-factor, it doesn't convert anything to another format.

Something like this

Edit: Check your laptop box (or any GPU box you might still have) for one of these. The one I'm using came with another video card.

I was thinking about trying something like this.

DP booster. Anyone have experience with something like that?

u/YerWelcomeAmerica · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

Can confirm 13' with booster worked great, no sparkles. However, I ended up returning it all and going with a 30' fiber cable with a standard $5 coupler and that worked out as well, while being a little cheaper and a lot longer. Here's the cable I got:

https://www.amazon.com/ATZEBE-Fiber-Displayport-Support-Flexible/dp/B07QQNFKZK

No sparkles at all. In the time I've had it, I had the display very briefly cut out twice (just for an instant) but it was in the same game so I'm not sure if it was related to the cable. The game was No Man's Sky which just added VR support and it had a lot of issues, so I'm leaning more towards the game. Either way, it's been so rare that I would think it was worth it.

I use these . They were like 15 bucks and they work great.

Set it up so that the cable is over your head and you won’t hit it when you rotate around, the reels allow you to move a few feet in every direction without issue.

This combined with turn signal completely changed my Pavlov and In Death experiences; no more tripping over/keeping track of cables or having to use the joystick to turn around all the time!

u/invidious07 · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

u/mavispuford · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

The one concern I have about this is it seems like the trident cable is male on the end that goes to the PC, then it is proprietary or USB-C or something going into the headset (see here). This means you'll still need a coupler or something right?

u/omegabob99 · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

I own an MSI gaming laptop and purchased this for my Index and it works fine.https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00HNF0KF0

I did have to revert to an earlier nVidia driver though as the one I was using (430.86) caused my Index's LCDs to turn off (or display just a black screen) and a warning on my laptop about a HDCP error, making me think it was the adapter.

Oh, I just checked and nVidia released a new driver today (7.9.19)!!!! v431.36 - Gonna install this when I get home from work! Thanks for making me check! haha!

u/FUCKOFFffsk · 1 pointr/ValveIndex

You have to go fiber :/ that or an active coupler like this one

u/nmezib · 6 pointsr/ValveIndex

Definitely buy a protector then. If glasses make contact with the lens and there are bits of dirt/grit between the lenses, you're gonna get scratches.

u/psivenn · 2 pointsr/ValveIndex

DisplayPort signals really hate long cables, so I don't think it's likely to be a problem with your GPU. I've struggled to find any confirmed 10ft cables. I do recall folks posting that they had 6ft working. There are active cables (I use a 50ft fiber optic) so if you have to, you can go that more expensive route.

At least a couple Pimax users reported luck with this extension but it sounds like that may be the one you tried.

Might reach out to this person to see if theirs worked.

Cable Matters 2-Pack DisplayPort... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YFPM2CU?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I do want to point out that I was having issues with this setup until I plugged the USB extender into my USB 3.1 card I installed in my motherboard.

This is the card I installed:

Rosewill RC-509 PCI-E (PCI Express) to USB 3.1 (Type A +Type C) Expansion Card USB 3.1 Gen II SuperSpeed 10Gbps Internal 15-Pin Power Connector USB-C Port 3A Charging Power With Asmedia Chipset https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRSTZXX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nCeWDbYQR65M3

The index only supports USB 3.0 but I suspect that USB 3.1 might supply a more stable power source. Also do make sure that with the fiber optic DP cable, you plug the side that says “source” into your graphics card and “display” into your trident connector. Seems obvious but I ran the cable twice the wrong way both times thinking I had the correct ends at each end.

I have trouble with the Displayport Gender Changer (female to female adapter). I tried a 8k DP 1.4 Cable (length) 5 meters and 3 meters and it didn't work. I guess the adapter is to blame. But there are only 2 diffrent available on Amazon and both don't say what version of DP they can handle.

I just bought a 3m male to female cable wich is sadly only DP 1.2 it works (on 144hz) but has some light snowy fragments and occasional short blackouts.

The best cable I tested so far is a DP 1.4 male to female from Club 3D. Sadly it's only available in 2 meter length. It works on 144hz with zero downsides so far.

BTW: I use a Geforce 1080 Ti. When I extended the cables of my Oculus rift I noticed that the output of my old GTX970 was not powerful enough and problems I had got solved magically when I upgraded my GPU.
