You should play Warcraft 3. It still holds up gameplay-wise and is the best way to consume the immediately-pre-WoW lore.

I would say read Rise of the Horde then Lord of the Clans then Day of the Dragon then the War of the Ancients trilogy. Those are the best of the books in my opinion

I started with the warcraft archives and was happy. Its 4 books in one and each is pretty solid. Not really linear but each book is good in its own right. Richard knaack and christie golden are both in it. I like knaacks writing style.

Doesn't matter when you read them really, but OP could mean the Movie Novelisation, rather than the Durotan prequel to which you refer.
