Used Book in Good Condition
The absolute best telescopes for beginners is a good 8 inch dobsonion. If you are willing to take the time to learn the night sky and don't need goto a good one is 400 or so new. For 650 you can get a push to 8 inch scope that allows you to tell it what you want to see and it will tell you how to push the scope to see it. True motorized ones are much more expensive
The reason 8 inches is the best starters is it's big enough to provide great views of everything from the moon, the major planets and all the brightest deep space objects. The dobsonion type scope is easy to setup, very stable, and light enough that it's not a big production to get it out and ready.
If you get a scope order the book "turn left at Orion" on Amazon. It is a great book that gives you easy to understand directions on where to point a scope any time of the year to see the best objects currently in the sky. Also see if there are any astronomy clubs in your area because they are normally very willing to help you get started
Astrophotography is a whole other can of worms and requires specialized telescopes mounts cameras etc

I'm not sure about actual attractions, but I'd like to recommend you this book, Wheeling's History of Gambling to 1976 by Mike Minder. I haven't read it but my dad was really into it and it's about gambling and the mafia around here, particularly Bill Lias (my dad's uncle ran money for him back in the day, oddly enough). I know it would be a great source for the topic and you could maybe get some landmarks to visit from it.
This
It is this on this. You can also use a 3" on a 1/8 oz jig, but you won't get as many bites from the little ones like the rock bass. The big ones bite on both small and big.
You just cast it out there and draw it back. If you have a boat, you can troll it behind you. The bait really doesn't have to hit the bottom. The fish will gobble it up no matter what.
You will catch red-eye (rock bass) and smallmouth in the greenbrier river. Stop by Pence Springs tomorrow (Sunday) for some shopping as it's the weekly flea market. There is a gas station (exxon) called country roads store that sells top notch hotdogs.
edit: every store sells these jigs around there. Drive on in to Alderson and there's a nice little bait store, but the gas stations have stuff too around there.
edit2: if you insist on live bait, use hellgrammites. The fish go for deeper water during mid day, so find big deep holes. Boats are best to use, but you can't put anything big in. This is a nice hole.
edit3: if you have a canoe, you can set in at Alderson and float down as far as you want. The reason you need a canoe is because there are shallow parts you can't get a Jon boat through.
edit4: It's called fishing, not catching. We all have slumps. Hang in there, and start early. mid-day fishing is always bad.
These are your best bets for "on the map" places in rough order of increasing distance from Morgantown. You can google any of them.
And these are all a bit further away:
Of these, Otter Creek Wilderness is, in my opinion, the best place you could go within 1.5 hrs of Morgantown for a hike. Bring good maps and a compass, because there is no signage. I recommend scanning this book's maps from the WVU library if you can.
The thing with peak oil is even at peak global production - the months AFTER peak production are likely to gradually decline over a decade or so. To put it another way the year before peak production whenever that may be (I would bet 2050 personally) will be the second most oil we have ever produced in a year. Well the year AFTER peak oil will likely ALSO be the second most oil we have ever produced in a year. Global demand how we will continue to rise even as oil production doesn't keep rising.
The thing that will drive how many years of oil we have left more than anything is demand. If developed countries continue to live wastefully (large trucks for a single person living in the city etc) and other countries continue to develop and use more energy (Brazil Chinia any African country) then demand will rise of course.
That's where renewable sources need to be ready to fill in the difference. Bridge the gap between production and energy demand.
The second curve down this page describes a the shape I think will happen. The years are wrong on this graph so pay them no attention. Just the general shape.

This is an excellent book on the topic of sustainable energy and the future of oil. We used it in a class that we took that only focused on renewables and the transition from fossil fuels.

There are a million different versions of this, but I personally carry a cooling towel similar to this one. You get it damp with water, and it stays cool as the water evaporates. I wear one around my neck, or tie it across my forehead to soak up sweat. Its a cheap option, and really helps.
Pop culture and folks making money off of stereotypes aside, if you have an interest in Appalachian English, there are some good books on the subject.
Here's one:

You can also check out Kirk Hazen's WV Dialect Project at WVU.
You would have better luck looking online. Here you can get 200 WV-themed pencils for about $100 depending on exactly how many you want.

Here's his book if anyone's interested
you're not going to have any luck with cellphones out there, but if you can get DSL, you may be able to use one of these: Microtel Cellular Signal Booster. We have some property in the Federal Quiet Zone (near White Sulphur Springs), and this has worked for us around our cabin.
I have an old one called “mountain measures” which I think fits the bill if you can find a copy.
Edit: Amazon has one in stock and two used, apparently.

I put both on Amazon, Prime eligible.
Mothman
Pepperoni Roll
The rest of my current selection. My main focus is on WV beer & homebrewing.
Check into these, they're half off now.

Here it is, unless it's not available in your region. It is $9.99 option.
Someone sells WV cutting boards on Amazon that have a similar issue. On the plus side, more surface area for cutting, and the area of VA we annexed is scenic.
New version with labels, and shape still wrong.
I know some of the info for that video came from a book called Thunder in the Mountains. Its a book entirely about the coal wars of 1920-1921 and just a really good book.
You also have the Official Fire Report notice there is a part at the top of the second page missing. It also mentions "exploding small arms ammunition."
Lastly you have the Testimony of William Briggs stating that Capitol would " destroyed either by fire or a bomb explosion"
yea the rabbit holes go mostly like that, a lot of using:

You're sounding like some uneducated fuck that thinks everyone can just pull themselves up with their own bootstraps and those who are poor are just too lazy to do so. I bet you think we should privatize everything, because then if no one got anything for free they wouldn't feel entitled to it and that would encourage them to work for a brighter tomorrow...
Your idealized view of capitalistic optimism may work for you in what ever delusion you have in your head, where Reagan is a God and opportunity just trickles down from above... But in reality, the system is fucking broken. It has fucking failed. These kids never had a fair chance to begin with, the playing field was never level, they were doomed to fail from the start.
An unstable household, they probably never received the same quality nutrition you did growing up, the education system was a fucking joke, our country treats drug addiction as a criminal problem (not a mental health problem) and the criminal justice system is just completely and utterly fucked...
So yeah, these "violent criminals" may have made some poor choices, but they had pretty limited options from the get go. Can you just maybe entertain the thought, for just half a fucking second, that the system was fucked and not to their advantage at all. They were set up for failure from they even started.
You should really broaden your horizons a little bit. I'm not suggesting anything drastic, like taking a liberal studies class at your local college, but maybe read a book on the matter.
I would really recommend Jeffery A Miron's Drug War Crimes Seriously, its a really interesting book- it deals with the consequences of drug prohibition and the socio-economic ripples that it leaves on generations of the population.
