Positive reinforcement/clicker training is the way to go with whippets (and all animals).

Some great YouTube channels I’d recommend are Zak George and KikoPup. Their videos are very informative and watching how to train the tricks helps a lot with training your own pup.

The website of dog trainer Victoria Stillwell, Positively, has lots of good articles on training. I also found the book “The Power of Positive Dog Training” by Pat Miller to be a big help as well.

r/dogtraining is a wonderful resource for ideas and problem solving.

Avoid like the plague any training program or trainer who advocates dominance based training theories or getting rough/violent with their animals while training. Dominance theory is outdated, disproven, and based on incorrect information. It can break down the bond of trust between dog and owner, as well as crest problems like fear based aggression towards the owner.

Congrats on your whippet puppy and best of luck with training!

I also got a whippet puppy in Jan with -30C weather. It was a challenge at the beginning because she was used to using newspaper at the breeder's indoors. We got a piece of sod initially but she was more consistent when we took her into our backyard. A warm jacket is a must. They'll learn quickly to just do their business quickly to get back inside. You could also use a shower stall/tub if in the middle of the night and freezing.

I'd suggest finding a puppy socialization class initially. Puppy Start Right was recommended (https://www.amazon.ca/Puppy-Start-Right-Foundation-Companion/dp/1890948446/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517626807&sr=8-1&keywords=start+right+puppy) and I'd suggest you watch some youtube videos (I'd suggest Zak George).

Crate train is a good idea for your own sanity (and property), and you'll learn to discern the usual whining from "i need to go potty" whining. There are videos on crate training as well.

Good luck and enjoy the "good" moments! He will definitely try your patience!

He’s 15.5 weeks now. We got him at 13 weeks. If you look up my previous post in here, I had some concerns getting him, mainly crate and potty training. He’s been nearly perfect with both since we got him. He sleeps overnight in the crate for a minimum of 9 hours, sometimes going in himself at night when he’s ready, and most days that seems like it’s not even enough and I have to lure him out to wake him up and get our day started. During the day he lasts up to 3.5-4 hours in there without making a peep, and he can probably stay in longer but we’re always available to get him out and play by then. I honestly feel like we’re using a cheat code with how good he’s been (knock on wood). He does chew random stuff when he’s out, but hasn’t ruined anything yet cause he’s always being watched and I can kinda tell he’s learning what not to chew already. I taught him to sit the fourth day we had him which got me really excited, but other commands are proving to be trickier, as when he’s awake he’s very energetic and gets distracted with all of his toys. My gf and I have a shared note and we document every single potty, nap, etc he does and we try to keep the same schedule every day. It’s working very well so far.

My two Italian greyhounds were never this easy. Both hated the crate and would potty in it and the house often, especially at this young of an age.

Didog Soft Flannel Padded Dog... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077CX59QQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

That’s the harness he has. It’s very soft on the inside so it doesn’t irritate him. He’s just under 15 pounds now and is wearing an XS.

His name is Carbon and he’s awesome.

We don't feed our girl raw food. We noticed she also likes to lick her food, not bite it like our lab (who is highly food-motivated).

One really big difference that improved things drastically... I thought she was bending her neck too much to eat. I know - sounds crazy right? So on a hunch, I purchased the following elevated bowl (and yes, the large which turns out is kinda small):

If you're really committed to training, you gotta sort of take a broader look at canine psychology and behavior instead of having a more narrow focus on breed characteristics. I would strongly recommend reading "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.

Bought this one on amazon. It works great.

And, our whippie is on the smaller side.

I have a Whippet / JRT mix and she has to have a harness. This is what I have. It fits pretty good (a little big in the neck but not bad).
