I would do what /u/AIO12 suggests, but with emphasis on using coconut oil. If you want to use butter, I suggest clarifying it first; this way it will keep longer. My method is to put the AVB in a jar, and then cover it with coconut oil (you may have to pre-liquefy the coconut oil if it is not hot in your house).
I fill the crockpot (or slow cooker) about half-way with water, and loosely tighten the top of the jar with the oil and AVB (I do this because some additional decarboxilation occurs, and this releases gas, and I don't want to risk the jar exploding -- although I realize this is highly unlikely). I make sure the water comes up about halfway to 3/4 of the way up the side of the jar of oil and AVB.
I also suspend the jar of AVB and Oil using the rings from canning jars. This way the jar of oil and bud is not touching the ceramic cooking vessel. This way you ensure that your product will never get hotter than ~212 degrees Fahrenheit.
I put other empty canning jars in the slow cooker around the edges so that things don't float or move around. I put the crock pot on high and leave it at that temperature setting for about 6 hours.
Once every hour or so, I will take the jar out and give it a shake, or open it up and give it a stir.
I usually end up adding extra water to top off the ceramic cooking vessel about 3 hours in, but since I keep the glass cover on the slow cooker, most of the water re-condenses and stays in the ceramic cooking vessel. But keep an eye on it! If the water evaporates you might damage your slow cooker (unlikely) or burn your infusion (likely). That would be so sad!
I also throw in a few pinches of fresh bud mixed in with the AVB -- I think this gives a slightly more full-spectrum infusion. Also, I think it tastes good. Also, I will add a couple of whole crushed cocoa beans and maybe half a stick of cinnamon during the infusion. It comes out smelling and tasting pretty damn good! The toastyness of the AVB, the smooth sweetness of the coconut oil, and the richness of the cocoa bean and cinnamon go really well together.
After 6 hours (or more), I remove the jar of oil and AVB. I let it sit for about 20 minutes so it cools down a little, but still stays hot and liquid.
Then, while still liquid, but not so hot as to burn me, I strain the bud and oil through a large cotton muslin bag (like this http://www.amazon.com/Cotton-Muslin-Bags-Drawstring-Count/dp/B004YTLW0K - which I also use for steeping loose herbal tea and for preparing kava kava). The reason I use these is because I can sinch off the bag, and use all my strength to twist and squeeze every last drop of precious infused oil out of the AVB. There is a LOT of oil that that will stay in the bud otherwise, and I have found this method to be best and quickest at salvaging almost all of it!
You should end up with a a lot of a very potent infusion. My latest batch is so strong... if I eat more than 1 teaspoon, I am practically wasted for the rest of the day. For me and my body, I have found that it takes, on average, TWO hours for the effects to kick in. Surprisingly long. Then the effects stick around and get more intense for a few hours, and then peak, and I am pretty much stoned for about 8 hours. Infused oil using AVB really rocks me. I get so stoned that I don't even feel like smoking pot or drinking alcohol. I am just all set.
One thing I will mention, if you are feeling adventurous or experimental: I want to try this, but haven't had a chance yet -- but I want to try doing the infusion in a pressure cooker. This will increase the temperature to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, which won't burn the bud or oil, and could result in an even more complete extraction of the AVB and infusion of actives into the oil. I have a pressure cooker which I use to sterilize substrate for the purpose of cultivating mushrooms at home, but that is all I use it for, so it would be nice if I could find another use for the pressure cooker. Ideally, my plans are to save up a bunch of AVB, and do 3 or 4 different infusions and then compare them. One theory I have is that the higher temp and pressure in the pressure cooker might be able to achieve an equivalent infusion (or an even BETTER infusion?!) than the slow cooker, but in half or even a quarter of the time. Time will tell...
Finally, another consideration for you might be to invest in something like the "cap-m-quick." This is a little "machine" that holds 00 gelatin or vegetable-based capsules. The oil will not leak through the capsules, as long as your oil is free of all water, and as long as your oil is as cool as possible while remaining a liquid. This is the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVIVL1YkF48
It would be nice to have capsules containing even quantities of the oil. It is discreet, pretty much odorless, and perfect for transportation, or for sharing with others. I plan on doing this today actually! I plan on storing the filled capsules in the freezer, for freshness. I will post something to this sub once I give it a try and let you guys know a) how it goes, b) if it seems worth doing, c) how much weight each capsule weighs, d) how consistent each capsule's weight is, and e) how effective they are at doing their job ;)
In any event, please do post your results back here! I for one would love to hear how your end product comes out :)
I have tried letting it sit at room temperature, it can take days and the potency is not quite as as high. You'll get the most if you still do the freezing and add soy lecithin powder.
If you want to try it without adding heat at least heat the oil before hand to be hot but not scalding then mix the ABV powder, lecithin, and oil together and seal the container, let it sit for about a day then freeze it for at least 2 hours, then let it sit for another day, and if possible freeze it one more time. Freezing is even more important when doing it without a heat source. If you have a computer, xbox, or other mild heat source you can also keep your sealed container near that.
Here's an example of a perfect container to make your ABV oil in since it has a sealing lid and a small vent if needed: http://www.amazon.com/CorningWare-1035985-French-White-20-Ounce/dp/B0002KZMCO/ref=sr_1_10?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1377078391&sr=1-10&keywords=ceramic+crock+lid
If you want to try making these stealthily try this:
A little mini crockpot is pretty cheap, many of them are labeled as potpourri warmers or even a candle warmer would work well, if you can't find these locally Amazon has them very cheaply. What I'd suggest is placing the ABV, lecithin, and oil in a ceramic container with a tight fitting lid to lower the smell to almost nothing then let it sit for a couple of hours. Let it cool then pop it in the freezer with the lid still on tight. Pure citrus sprays such as pure citrus orange (walmart) or Citrus II which you can get at a restaurant supply store is great at covering up odors and smells wonderful. Ozium is also a great tool to use.
Another thing you can use is activated charcoal. This is available anyplace that has aquarium supplies (pet stores, walmart, target, etc) place a good amount into a sock and tie off the end then place the socks in your stash and keep one very close to the mini crock or candle warmer, it will significantly reduce the odor. Even if you're making this at room temperature I'd still recommend the activated carbon. It also works well for making sploofs.
If you have any more questions please let me know! And remember that soy lecithin, freezing, and time are the three most important things to making a successful and potent batch!
I know exactly what you mean with the taste, I usually can't even hold the abv down if I taste it. So I would recommend you make cannacaps. You'll still get gross abv burps and farts but they won't be as bad.
First step would be to get your abv to a fine grind, basically powdered. It's not super important, but it makes a difference in a couple different ways, and mortar and pestle sets can be pretty cheap. Hell you could probably even makes one that gets the job done. If you do grind your abv further, that's gonna be the smelliest part of this process, so I'd recommend you prep your room better than you would just for vaping.
The next step would normally be to water cure but since you're in a dorm that's likely not an option due to both smell and access to equipment. I have another method you can use to cure your abv with a pressure cooker that doesn't require an oven, if you're interested I can write that out for you, but I'd imagine smell would still be an issue.
Once your abv is ready, you can start to cap them. 00 sized caps work best IMO, they're pretty big so they hold a lot of abv. You could totally fill them up one by one, but if you can I'd recommend grabbing a capsule machine so you can fill a large number of capsules (the one I linked does 100 at a time) in like 10 minutes. The machine also does a super good job at getting as much abv as possible into each cap, which is part of why a super fine grind is important. Oh and if you do go for the machine, MAKE SURE you get one that matches the size of caps you have, I made that mistake once.
Regarding coconut oil, I don't usually use it but I've heard really good things about it maximizing THC absorption. I don't believe you can easily infuse your abv with oil without a kitchen/smell, but if you wanted to you could put a bit in the caps with the abv.
And there you go, simple cannacaps! I'd recommend you have a large fatty meal with or soon after taking the caps to maximize absorption. I'd also like to note that IME abv cannacaps fuse is even more unpredictable than just eating it, I've had it take like 4 or 5 hours to hit with caps.
I'm late to the party but this scale is great: American Weigh Signature Series Black AWS-100 Digital Pocket Scale, 100 by 0.01 G. Very precise and accurate and cheap. I recommend getting something that can resolve 10x more precise then you need. So get one that can go down to .01G and you can be confident you are accurately weighing .1G...
No, never tried it without the jar. It would be messier and harder to transfer the stuff. Also, I like to have it in the jar so I can take it out and freeze it then repeat easily. For your tiny crockpot, though, they don't recommend using the jar. I've had this one for 5+ years just for this kind of stuff :). It's important to get one with a 'keep warm' setting instead of just 'low'. In the end, don't worry too much, if you mess it up a little you'll probably still get a usable product, and after some trial and error with the methods in those links you'll find what works best for you. Definitely try vaping it less next time also. Good luck!
Full proof method that I use: just fill empty capsules with ABV. Works like a charm. I keep them in a Melatonine pill bottle - yeah it does help me sleep.
I have been using this for years, it is great. And I get capsules from amazon
yeah, don't smoke ABV, don't smoke tobacco. at this point it sounds like you just want to roll something, which i cannot relate with (because i don't smoke tobacco). there are a myriad of other uses for abv, pick one like capsules which is easy as fuck http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OSQS4U?keywords=oo%20vegetable%20capsules&qid=1449950767&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
Step 1 buy these Now Foods '00' Gel Capsules, 250 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E40DJ82/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Ib7nxb4MVX8GS
Step 2 grind your abv to powder. I don't care how. A magic bullet works great and take 10 seconds.
Step 3 scoop the abv into these capsules and pack it semi tight.
Tadaa! Capsules that DON'T make you gag.

How about gummy bears?
This recipe goes over decarbing and making oil so you can skip right to the making gummies step.
The recipe uses 1/4c which is about 60ml so you might want to scale it back a little or add 10ml of normal coconut oil.
I’ve found that coconut oil makes great gummy bears and if you add some mold inhibitor they won’t need to be refrigerated.
These. Worked perfectly!
Dern, now I'm really hungry. I just got this book and am looking forward to trying something from it. I have the previous edition and he's the best. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039958031X/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q411F12/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this is the one I got. Looks like they're out for now. Available on ebay though!
I got them off amazon too. Got these ones http://www.amazon.com/Capsule-Connection-Wholesale-Gelatin-Capsules/dp/B00428B6X6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
Cheap in price, not in quality. This shit grinds my abv to a powder in a few seconds and is super small for storage.
