I should probably pull this post for not being Portland-related, but it's really hot and I'm sorry you don't have a fan. For researching stuff like this I really like The Sweethome and its tech-related sister site The Wirecutter

Here's their picks for The Best Fan. I actually recently bought their runner-up pick, the Vornado 630 (although the price has gone up, it was $60 when I bought it.) It's a great little fan.

I can recommend Allies in Change, they have a couple of locations and offer a few different approaches to counseling (group, couple, individual). Not sure about cash pay pricing, but it might be worth giving them a call to see if you think they have something that would be a good fit for you.
I also can't recommend the book Nonviolent Communication highly enough. It should be required reading for humans.

Everything I said is true: the cash you're willing spend will get you the best in this city. I see you shitbagging me in other comments so I'll just say this:

There is a huge socio-political context that you're entering into. Saying you'll drop enough for the top 1% of housing is going to make people assume a lot about you. You'll have a ton of fun here--those celebrity chefs don't charge as much as they do back home--but if you plan on staying and becoming a part of the community then I recommend watching American Winter and reading Fugitives and Refugees (though it's outdated, sadly the 24 Hour Church of Elvis has closed) to get an idea of whats going on in this city.

Clay soil is a wideapread problem here. You can improve it considerably by adding compost on top of it. You don't have to work it into the soil, though when you dig a planting hole, you should add some then.

While you can buy garden compost by the bag, if you're starting out, it's more cost-effective to have a load delivered to your driveway. If you don't want to spread a large quantity yourself, you can have it blown in. Quick and easy! These guys did a great job in my yard: https://www.bestbuyintown.biz/products-services/soil-additives

As far as tools to loosen the soil for digging planting holes, I reccomend a device like this: https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Weasel-91316-Claw/dp/B000WOMYMG

We got some Cirepril hard wax, a good heater and watched some videos. There were some hilarious (and painful!) incidents as part of our learning process, but it's been really positive.

Blue hard wax we use

this is the wax warmer we have

I loved Fugitives and Refugees by Chuck Palahniuk because it really set the tone for how strange aspects of Portland was, although I’m not sure how accurate it remains 15 years later. Still a great book though.

I recommend getting this book, which will guide you to all of the features you're looking for, and rates them on a scale from 1-10: http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Oregon-Camping-Complete-Outdoors/dp/1566918413

Note that the best and most highly rated spots will need reservations at http://www.recreation.gov/. Even in late May, you'll run into snow and nights around 25-35 degrees on Mt. Hood, so I would recommend cold weather camping gear. For coast, try Cape Lookout.

I bought this last year for my own poor kitty, she loves it! Packed it away for the summer but it's out now and still going strong. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S9M2V8
Biggest downside is that she's less needy for cuddles, but at least she's comfortable when I'm not home.

You could give something like https://www.amazon.com/Cobra-86150-4-Inch-15-Feet-Pistol/dp/B000I5HVBI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503978933&sr=8-1&keywords=cobra+drum+auger. I'm not sure how well they work for storm drains, but it combined with a power drill will almost certainly be cheaper than having a professional come out and might be worth a try.

> the coldest month last year cost me close to $400.

> I've also gone around sealing up cracks in the year I've lived here

If you don't have one of these yet, I highly recommend it. Super cheap and you can pinpoint exactly where the hot/cold spots are. You'll probably find quite a bit around the windows and floorboards, but if you've got single-pane windows that aren't covered there's likely a massive amount passing right through.

I'm reading this one right now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0961815272/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's one that looks good, too:
https://www.amazon.com/Listening-Coyote-Across-Oregons-Wilderness/dp/0870715267/ref=pd_sim_14_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PRYJR1A24STMYKGQSKKS

I have another Oregon guide book from a local shop here. It covers all regions of OR, with extra chapters and detail on Portland area.

You need to recalibrate your settings pretty frequently they aren't expensive thats why people usually buy them.

Most people don't buy sub $100 devices and rent them out. It just doesn't make much sense.

With eDP connecting a laptop screen to a regular PC is a little easier than it used to be but, unless you can find an adapter kit for a specific panel you want to use (not sure how common this is), it's still not super simple. Someone on hackaday made one you can order and assemble yourself for one of the apple displays.

Personally I'd be looking at something like this portable monitor which can already take a regular HDMI cable.

This. I’ve got horrible allergies to all sorts of mold and pollen and such and getting the right filters and battling indoor humidity have been the two key factors to make it livable.

Make sure they are really good filters, I’ve been using these ones since moving here: Filtrete Healthy Living Elite Allergen Reduction https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005F5D5WK

And clean the dehumidifiers regularly, or else they become mold generators! I’ve also been using damp rid chemical dehumidifiers in my entry closet and garage. (that last I suspect is a losing battle.)

Note that you may also want to chat with a Doctor up here about what you are using if it doesn’t work well. What I used in AZ did not work in MN... what I switched to there didn’t quite work here so I’ve had to make some tweaks every time I’ve moved. Biggest problem I’ve found with that is that the meth heads have made it illegal to buy actual pseudoephedrine here, so Sudafed in Oregon is made with phenylephrine instead. Sure you can buy it OTC without signing into the feds log book... but it doesn’t work at all for some folks (me) or as well for others. YMMV.

what you really want is this:

https://www.amazon.com/Cheese-Bread-Mix-Mistura-GLUTEN-FREE/dp/B008M8XEVE?th=1

My Brazilian wife makes it a lot and is a preferred brand in Brasil.

try kitchen kaboodle

http://www.kitchenkaboodle.com

Their online site says they carry this product so they should have it in their retail stores

We've been happy with this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_USLpyb9PP30V0. Only complaint is it rubs paint off the wall if you aren't careful. Super easy to use and always moveable if you have a different spot in mind

u/higher_moments · 1 pointr/askportland

It's not freestanding, but I use this wall mount in my apartment and it works quite well. No handy skills required--just find a stud and screw it in.

Well in recent history there was Slabtown, the original Know, Dunes, Club 21, etc. But some stories are not just about gentrification. Each was a small business and some just kind of collapsed when they needed to, or when the owners moved on, etc.

Going back further look at Satyricon (the first one), the Meow Meow, Eejay’s, La Luna, Cafe Wha, the X-Ray, the Globe etc.

Or if you’re talking about way back in the day, look into “Jumptown” and how the city fucked that up
