My beagle mix wears a Kurgo Journey harness. It's a little on the pricey side, but I'm SO glad I bought it. He's way too strong for his size and loves to pull, which meant not only was he dragging me down the road at first sight of a squirrel, but he was choking himself at the same time! I really like the control this harness gives me, it makes walks so much more enjoyable for both of us. Here's my selling points:

  • handle on the back comes in handy when his beagle nose gets the best of him.
  • easy to put on: over the head, and then buckle the straps on each side. No legs involved.
  • doesn't seem to rub or chafe, and if he pulls the pressure is distributed evenly across his chest.
  • there's a d-ring on the back and on the front, which is a nice option.
  • comes with a strap/carabiner for the car
  • CRAZY sturdy. This was a splurge item for me, but I expect it to last forever.

Hi!

I had the exact same problem with my beagle Ruby.
My mum got her one of these and she seems to like it.

Don't have to touch her paws to put it on (which she also hates), has reflective strips on it, and a handle to pull her away from all the nasty stuff she tries to eat! I'm in the UK but hopefully this brand is available where you are and meets your budget needs!

I also love that your beagle and I share the same name ha ha.

Hope that helps!

Beagles are not a violent breed, so you are safe for the most part. Where the playful friction gets to hissing and scratching is that beagles like to corner their prey and bay at it. Cats hate loud noises and being cornered, so this generally ends with the cat doing a face scratch. I have declawed cats (adopted that way), so this cycle repeats every few days. The one time we watched a clawed cat for friends, this was over quite quickly.

Also, consider a pet gate like this. Small door lets cats through but blocks dogs, very good escape hatch/tool to keep dog out of the garbage. Handle lets you through easy, great investment even without cats.

Use something like this to dilute shampoo and conditioner. Get some kind of hose attachment. These kick ass when washing dogs.

Edit: Meant to reply on my other thread but ok

I bought Fritz one of these Gooby harnesses from Petco, it works pretty well and it's made of soft material so it doesn't chafe.

Fritz knows he has to put it on to go on a walk and often meets me halfway by slipping into it when I hold it up, but usually he's too excited for the walk to sit still and jams his whole body into a leghole.

Also, it's a bit loose around his midsection so if he's left alone to his own devices he CAN slip out of it, but he's a chihuahua-beagle mix so he's a bit small than the standard beagle.

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Harness-Medium-BLACK-SILVER/dp/B0009ZD3QY I've used this for my beagle mix for the past 5 years. They last about 4 years, reduce pulling to almost zero and can be fitted that it just slides over their head and gets buckled behind their arm pits.

There are various types of harnesses just like this that had padding for the pits and belly to avoid rubbing.

I buy the 10 oz ones of these

Tearing things up could also be anxiety. Our beagle destroyed lots of stuff until we got a dog door so he could ‘escape’ the confinement.

He does like the cheese bones. They stink, and beagles love stinky treats.
