I'm a mother to a great kid who was born with a bilateral complete-complete cleft lip and palate.
You'll want to keep formula on hand, because no one knows when your milk will come in. That's the case with every baby.
Are you set up with a cleft palate clinic? If not, please do so. It's a collaboration of doctors and specialists that work together to give your child every advantage. My son's clinic has a feeding and lactation specialist that helped me with everything. "Pump lessons" are awkward, but worth it.
What I did was pump with a hospital-grade breast pump. Hospital-grade makes a world of difference when you're only pumping and not nursing. If your insurance won't cover a hospital-grade pump, Medella is the best on the market.
As per bottles: my son used these nipples. There's a disc-shaped valve that you insert into the nipple that allows your baby to get enough food. These are an absolute Godsend. GODSEND! My son never fell behind on weight, despite having three reconstructive surgeries before he was one.
You're probably sick of hearing this: Please try to pump for at least the first six weeks. Breastmilk is nothing short of amazing for your baby, and BONUS it really helps shed post-pregnancy weight.
I pumped for nine months. I want to tell you that pumping is kinda weird, not glamorous because you feel like livestock sometimes, and you have to plan your schedule around it to avoid leaky boobs. However, I would do the exact same thing again if I needed to in a heartbeat. It was worth every inconvenience of mine to give my son what was best. That being said, every Mom is different, and don't you dare let someone ever make you feel less-than for giving your baby formula because pumping makes you cringe.
We're here for you. Please feel free to PM me anytime.
There is already a lot of good information here from other parents. The one thing I will add is that for us the best bottles that worked were the HABERMAN you can find on amazon here. https://www.amazon.com/Medela-6200S-SpecialneedsTM-Feeder-150ml/dp/B001LIQ018
For the first couple of weeks we used the ready made bottles of formula. https://www.amazon.com/Similac-Pro-Advance-Formula-Support-Newborn/dp/B000N351WQ/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1501071495&sr=1-1&keywords=ready%2Bmade%2Bformula&th=1
The main thing is to keep calm and patient at first. We struggled for the first 2 days before we found a routine and flow that worked for us. If you have anymore questions feel free to message me. There are also plenty of cleft related communities on Facebook if you can find one you like.
