birbigs is awesome and blowing up the last couple of years. he has a new book, did a one-man show off-broadway, and has been all over this american life on npr.

patrice o'neal is hilarious and vastly underappreciated. louis ck has a lot of recognition and rightfully so, but i don't think anyone can call him mainstream. maria bamford's sheer nuttiness makes me laugh every time. greg proops has been doing a lot of other things for a long time, but his standup is still top-notch. dov davidoff is a guy on the rise who has a hedberg-esque persona. james adomian is known for his dead-on impersonations, but his standup is great too. there are tons of great comedians working right now.

start checking out some comedy podcasts and they'll introduce you to lots of great people. my favorites are wtf with marc maron, comedy death ray radio, doug loves movies, and risk! which isn't standup, but is some wickedly funny true stories.

Jeselnik talked about taking a class by greg dean. Tracked the book down, - http://www.amazon.com/Step-Stand-Up-Comedy-Greg-Dean/dp/0325001790 - very succinctly explains the structure of a joke. Very well written and insightful on how to set them up and deliver. Read that, follow it, and you will be in the top 10% of open mics.

Perhaps either of these books by Jimmy Carr would interest you?

Can you name some? I honestly can't think of a male comic who could get away with having half their show's episode titles be about sex without having anyone deem them as raunchy comics.

I've heard good things about the UCB's Comedy Improvisation Manual.

I've never read that, so I can't endorse if it's any good. Looking at the reviews though I would say to avoid it. But it does serve as a decent starting ground for finding what you're looking for. I found it by searching google for "book of insults" which I know are fairly common. I'd recommend beginning there and branching off from just a book of insults to find what you're looking for specifically. Definitely look at reviews or examples from the books themselves though.

Searching for "book of witty retorts" pulled up this which sounds like it might be more up your alley:

oh no, I know you can get 15 stories high, i very specifically meant an old stand up album he did (which happens to have the exact same name as a later stand up dvd). That is also worth a look.
