It totally shattered my perception of the meaning or even importance of the idea of intelligence, or more specifically, IQ. For instance, the research shows that the best of the chess grand champions have mediocre IQs. Instead he found that committed and purposeful practice was way more critical to being the best at chess. Establishing powerful and instantly accessible mental patterns for a specific skill set is key and that only comes from meaningful repitition.

If this is of interest to you, I recommend you read the book "Salt: A World History" by Mark Kurlansky. Among many other things, he goes into great detail about how salt has been used as a flavoring and preserving agent in condiments for millennia. He talks specifically about garum.

For those who are interested, there is an excellent 3-book series by Robert Sawyer called "The Neanderthal Parallax."

It assumes a parallel quantum reality where Homo sapiens went extinct, and Neanderthals thrived. Through a quantum experiment gone awry in our world (Homo sapien-dominated), a scientist from the Neanderthal world appears in our world. It gets interesting from there.
