As far as I know, you'll need some kind of module to control the strip. Something like a Hue+ kit is ideal, but you can get something like this for cheaper at the cost of working well. Depending on your motherboard, you may even have built in compatibility through something like Asus Aura.
As for, /r/desktops, this is just a place to show what your Windows home screen looks like. I'd maybe try /r/buildapchelp or maybe even just /r/buildapc for this kinda stuff :)
This sub is for screenshots of your desktop background, as opposed to PC support, but in answer to your question, I've been using this for the past couple of years and it's been superb. Plug & play, no hassle.
