You might want to check out /r/edcny since this subreddit is basically for Vegas.
I went to EDC NY the past two years...at MetLife the first year and then Citi Field last year. MetLife is MUCH better and you're lucky that it's back there this year. While the lineup doesn't have some big names, there are plenty of people to see. Branch out and experience new music! My first year, I didn't know many of the smaller DJs, but I had a blast discovering new music and new names to listen to and now some of those DJs are my favorite. One thing I can't stress enough, go experience Carl Cox & Friends! Cox is amazing and most people don't get many chances to see him.
I usually take a little backpack or fanny pack with a few essentials...and then things like lollipops, gum, vicks, paper diffraction glasses to hand out, and glowsticks. I bring enough of everything, so I can share and hand it out to other people. Like you, I usually just wear a casual/comfy outfit and add a bunch of Kandi singles to trade with people. We all wore neon body paint, but I didn't dress up more than that.
I definitely recommend staying in a hotel. MetLife is in New Jersey, so it's still a little bit of a trek from the city. Even though I lived in Manhattan, I didn't want to deal with public transportation and waiting to go back into the city. The trains were a mess after the festival and it was nice going back to our hotel room to relax and freshen up. I think we stayed at the Extended Stay in the Meadowlands. It was about $140/night and 6 of us managed to fit in the room.
I totally recommend buying a camelbak! They're decently priced on Amazon, I think I bought mine for $50. EDC is amazing with water and had free refill stations, so I only had to fill up the camelbak 3 times a day and my friends and I were able to stay hydrated without a problem. Yes, you can also refill your water bottles, but then you have to keep going back, which can be annoying if you don't want to miss a set. Alcohol was pretty expensive. It was $10 per beer I think.
There's tons of after-parties in the city afterwards, but my group and I were always way too tired to make it back into Manhattan. We actually enjoyed going back to our hotel room to chill, drink/smoke and hangout. There were also a lot of parties happening in the hotel we were staying at. But, there will be plenty of parties in the city if you want that option (you'll have to buy tickets/pay cover).
I've never been to EDC in Vegas, which is on my bucket list...even though EDC NY doesn't compare, it is amazing on its own. I liked it WAY more than Electric Zoo. The second year wasn't as great because Citi Field was cramped, but MetLife is a great location. There's plenty of space between stages and plenty of places to just sit and relax. I also loved the art installations and carnival rides. It added a whole new level to the experience. Most importantly, unlike Electric Zoo, I liked the crowd. They were friendly and most people didn't shove and push to get to the front, so I had space to dance in the back without being bothered. A lot has changed in two years, so it might be different. It's still one of my favorite festivals/events I've been to though.
Have fun with your friends, enjoy the music, and you'll have a great time.
Someone on /r/aves made this guide that you might want to check out, but it appears to be more for camping festivals. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Hi! The beads you want are called pony beads, best to buy a variety of colors, and I really prefer sorted boxes like this: https://www.amazon.com/Beadery-Bead-Extravaganza-19-75-Ounce-Pearl/dp/B007QNFP40/ref=sr_1_7?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1496023909&sr=1-7&keywords=pony+beads
They are good to use for most of the bracelet, some people also like to put on fancy glass or wood beads, or metal charms, or plastic small toys, the possibilities are endless.
For string, you want something stretchy, and my personal favorite is this fabric covered elastic: https://www.amazon.com/White-Medium-Elastic-Cord-Yard/dp/B000GPTDB6/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1496023994&sr=1-4&keywords=elastic+string but some people also use clear plastic stretchy string.
Other things you might want are letter beads for writing words: https://www.amazon.com/Trasfit-Acrylic-Alphabet-Bracelets-Necklaces/dp/B01IQNJF1W/ref=sr_1_13?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1496024078&sr=1-13&keywords=letter+beads
You can find all of these locally at any craft store (joann, michael's, hobby lobby, even the craft section of walmart, or whatever your local equivalents are).
For the kandi masks, I've never made one, but I have had good luck searching for tutorials for cuffs and other things on youtube. I'm sure they will have a good one for masks too. Good luck! :) It's very rewarding to be able to give kandi and trade to make memories.
I use Downbeats, I've had them for a little over 6 months now and they have been working great at a price standpoint. The earplugs are fairly small, so if you like discretion I'd recommend these. As far as clarity I'd rate it at an 8/10, so not much issue with sound quality, although at times I've had a tiny bit of trouble hearing people(only when super close to the speakers). It's so gratifying knowing I can go to these events and come back without any hearing loss lmfao.
Edit: I'd also like to point out that earplugs are amazing in camping environments when you're trying to sleep... These were a lifesaver at Beyond 2 weeks ago.
Camelbak brand is the best but if you want to save your money and still have great quality .... here you go fam TETON Sports Trailrunner 2 Liter Hydration Backpack Perfect for Biking, Running, Hiking, Climbing, and Hunting; Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006JYHFJA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_S8XdzbBRXJPVC
I bought [these] (http://smile.amazon.com/Lite-Up-Diffraction-Multi-Pack-Transparent/dp/B01D3T065I/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) ones. And the heart ones were AMAZING!! The spirals were okay.
I also bought [these] (http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B005JT5P7A) ones (mostly because they were cheap) & they look pretty cool in my kitchen...just waiting to bust them out & share them during EDC!
The ear plugs I have are the Etymotic Ear Plugs. They come with their special carrying case and attachment string so you don't lose them.
As far as croakies go, you can grab them almost anywhere from Wal-Mart, Target, Dollar Store, Greek stores, etc. They come in many styles whether thick and flat with words/designs or more round and like a string. I'd take a look at the croakies on amazon to see what kind of style you like and would fit your glasses. If you want to go all out, check out croakies on Greek Stores or places like Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Brooks Brothers, for some classy designed ones.
I'm bringing these this time around they're by etymotic but a little more(+ $8) and they're supposed to be a little better and more discrete.
Also if comfort is more important to you than sound attenuation then the Earasers are pretty good from what I understand and after a while don't feel like anythings there
That may have been me or the almost any other gay man that has been to their fair share of circuit parties. However, I did get a few of my straight buddies onto them and it's such a great sight to watch. They bring it now to shows.
Here's the one a lot of people buy for these events or circuit parties:
Black Performance Folding Fan #359 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AMPHC4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_eJohzb1S8S5F2
I bought the Etymotic Research ear plugs and love them.
I wear them to festivals as well as going out to the clubs. You really should protect your ears!
OP, if you went to a festival at NOS Event Center, the outside sound is abysmal there.
I've used Etymonic Research and Westone earplugs. They are both comfortable to wear all night and don't distort the sound quality. The Westones are my favorite and are really discrete. They are $13-$20 depending on where you get them but can easily last you years if you don't loose them.
ETY-Plugs High Fidelity Earplugs, Standard Fit, Frost Tip
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015WJQ7A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_v7lkzb19MDB1C
Westone Universal Fit Protective WR 20 Earplug
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6CX7HU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i-lkzb36PY1D5
This is the one im using, pretty good quality and not to big can fit in your luggage bag if youre flying. Having it able to fit it in my luggage and a compact size is what i was mainly looking for
i get tinnitus easily, bought these for $28 and havent had since! if you go to shows often, listen to music in headphones all day, play music, good earplugs are absolutely worth it.
https://www.amazon.com/LiveMus-HearSafe-Silicone-Triple-Noise-Cancelling/dp/B00H2F87I8/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1491342361&sr=8-5&keywords=earplugs%2Bfor%2Bmusicians&th=1
I got these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM6Q9XW they're pretty awesome. Cut down on the "harshness" that hurts my ears but lets me hear everything clearly. I can easily have a convo w/ them on.
I used a runners belt at Beyond this year and it was best investment ever. Didn't have to worry about my ID and phone. It was super snug and no one was going to try to take anything.
https://www.amazon.com/Level-Terrain-FlipBelt-Waist-Medium/dp/B00JF9DWWU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1496696648&sr=8-2&keywords=flipbelt
This one from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OWM2BY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Wasn't too tall so it didn't hit any of the decorations that are above (e.g. while walking on/off Rainbow Road there are lights that could easily get tangled up). If you hold it up high, you'll be able to see it in the live streams. But it's not so high that you're getting in the way of others when you set it down since it's as tall as you are basically.
When we walked in, I had the telescoping part all the way down and the flag folded up so it could simply be patted by security. Much easier than having it in full-mast and them question anything.
eargasm (normal size)
eargasm (small size)
Once you get these, you’ll know why they’re called that. The best ones that I’ve ever used. :)
This what I used! In my opinion the battery pack is perfect for my hydration pack!
Zitrades EL Wire Kit 9ft, Portable Neon Lights for Parties, Halloween, Blacklight Run, DIY Decoration (5 Pack, Each of 9ft, Red, Green, Pink, Blue, White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005Q5WVBU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uZF7Ab8ESM39X
Grab yourself one of these. I ordered one last year and it's perfect. Super lightweight, sturdy, all that good shit. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OWKELO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_UeuSAbY20H9W3
Flagpole To Go Portable Flagpole Hide A Pole https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OWM2BY/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_ratfvb1QG5NK4
I'm wondering if I need to wrap it in like a foam noodle or something. It's pretty solid and this is my first EDC so not sure if they will allow it.
Sorry, I should have specified hand fan. This is the fan I brought this year.
you'll wanna put in earplugs way before your ears start ringing, cause at that point, the damage is already done. I recommend these. They're easy to take in and out and preserve the quality of the sound pretty well.
side note: You could use your pi to run some LEDs on your clothes or a bag. I'm using an arduino to power a sound reactive belt and suspenders.
Etymotic Research ER20 ETY-Plugs
these ones
Pretty good quality and if you have a prime you can get them before edc!
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006JYHFJA/
$24 and you can use it anywhere for any purpose. Hiking, out for a run, walking around a city. But it's a godsend for festivals and I can't imagine going to one without it.
I'm gonna buy one of these: Running Belt USA Patented – iPhone X 6 7 8 Plus Pouch for Runners . Best Fitness Gear for Hands-Free Workout . Freerunning Reflective Waist Pack Phone Holder . Men, Women, Kids Running Accessories https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019BQNTL0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mn8OCbQT31MRV
I was torn between the downbeats and the etymotic but decided on the earpeace after watching some video reviews. Hopefully theyre worth it!
Drawstring or camelback with 2 small packets and a large pocket. Don't bring a school backpack and you should be fine. Sealed gum and sealed Chapstick are good ideas, as is a bandana for dust. Diffraction glasses are cool too, regardless of drug use.
Earplugs. I bought a pair of DownBeats and they sounded great. They are a must if you want to get up close and personal with the Basscon stage.
I used these Etymotic earplugs this last edc and they worked great!
I use these . Love them.
Hey so I just got a backpack mount especially for EDC, I bought it from Amazon and it has good reviews.
It's a little bit big even on my normal backpack but I think it will be ok with some minor padding to the back I will post the link for it.
backpack POV mount
Loud. Wear ear plugs if you value your hearing. I always recommend these Plugs by Etymotic
Selfe-stick! hahaha
But for real,
/u/rayhoop has it:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OWM2BY/ref=cm_sw_su_dp
I have always used these, bought multiple pairs (because I lose them easily lol) and they are amazing.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I went with these this year, never tried them before but the reviews are good.
https://www.amazon.com/ETY-Plugs-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Frost/dp/B0015WJQ7A?th=1
Use a running belt like this one and never have to worry about phone theft again. Plus you can keep your wallet there too. I use mine every day now, no more stuff in my pockets at parties!
I have one its called flipbelt its amazing
http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-ETY-Plugs-Protection-Earplugs/dp/B0044DEESS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374342280&sr=8-1&keywords=ear+plugs
These are the ones I used at EDC this year. They were fantastic.
Invest in nice earplugs. For $14, you can save your hearing and still hear the music perfectly (even better when there's distortion).
Some of the stages were preposterously loud this year (especially cosmicMEADOW). I can't imagine what it was like for people without earplugs. Don't fuck around with this stuff. Tinnitus and hearing loss are a bitch.
I use etymotics. They have worked very well! $12.99 on amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-ETY-Plugs-Protection-Earplugs/dp/B0044DEESS?ie=UTF8&keywords=etimotics&qid=1464681680&ref_=sr_1_sc_3_a_it&sr=8-3-spell
I use this one https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Trailrunner-Hydration-Backpack-Climbing/dp/B006JYHFJA/
Everyone just has to remember that this isn't a TSA-type search, they arent going to be out there measuring bags. As long as it doesn't appear to be over their requirements, it should be fine. That said, just remember EDC hasn't published a change in their security requirements yet, so take everything going around with a grain of salt for now.
It doesn't have to be the touristy type of fanny pack - I got this running belt and this "wallet". Running belt held my phone, wallet, and one of my medical devices with room to spare and fit under my shirt without any lumps or weird shapes. Stayed secure all three nights.
Used this at every festival for 3 years now.
Flagpole To Go 14-Foot Portable Flagpole https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OWKELO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_exIjyb70N4XFF
I'm gonna repeat what /u/Diagonalizer said below and recommend you buy this pair by the same company: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
They're a bit better sound reduction and actually fit flush with your ears. Those stubs sticking out of the blue ones hurt if I wore a mask/hugged someone too hard. :D
these are good too -- the shorter stubs are less likely to get pushed into your ear when hugging/bumping into some one
Good earplugs. recommended from many threads here and /r/aves
What in the fuck is a reccommdatoon
Also I use this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AMPHC4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jUr2AbB3A566K, it's fucking giant and good build quality and makes a satisfying THWWWAP sound when you open it
Concealable And Reusable Cruise Flask Kit Sneak Alcohol Anywhere - 3 x 8 oz + 1 funnel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O84199K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kaAbBb6H6JMHX
Happy smuggling!!!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00H2F87I8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1496695164&sr=8-1&keywords=live+music+ear+plugs
These are the kind I use. I bought them before edclv 2016 and have used them several times. I also like the metal container they come in. I can hook it to my belt loop or my hydration pack.
https://www.amazon.com/Bodyglide-Original-Anti-Chafe-2-5-Ounce-Packaging/dp/B0043S06GI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465831162&sr=8-1&keywords=bodyglide
Unfortunately, if you have Amazon Prime, they are backordered so you may not get it in time for EDC :(
Edit: I don't know what area you're from but if you have a Big 5 or Dick's Sporting Goods, they may have it there. Check store availability & call to make sure they're in stock so they can hold one for you...

Flag poles To Go brand on amazon have lightweight ones that they can ship in a couple days. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OWKELO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In my opinion, these type of flasks that masquerade as something like a camera, phone, lotion bottle, etc all suck if you get someone at security who's even remotely diligent at looking through your bag. A lot of the times these flasks feel cheap and the moment you pick it up, you can just tell it's not real.
I find just taping one or two of these to my inner thighs work well. It'll be uncomfortable until you can get to security but eh, booze.
I got these. There’s 2 sizes in the box. The larger of the 2 are the ones I stuck with, so you should be good.
Amazon
Amazon. Flagpole-to-go. I got the 15’ one. Keep it short when you go in. Go here
Edit: Link
Yeah I had to learn to how to sew too and avoided any soldering, I was recommended these
Stumbled across this post while ensuring I had the cable I needed to power our RV. There's a 50 foot that uses the connector specified by Insomniac on amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004809YBE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The guy at my rental place said there's no issue with plugging two cables together except to be mindful of the amount of power draw due to the cable length (e.g. don't run microwave, ac and a hairdryer all at once).
Polar Pro Strap Mount
I like this because it screws down tight on both sides of the strap. Only way to get off is to unscrew clip or go pro mount.
The 5 pack of EL wire I ordered just got here yesterday and I was actually giving the other 4 out to my crew so our packs can be dope AF. EL wire looks a lot better in low light situations since it isn't a strip of lights but rather the entire strand is lit so it isn't as annoying to others o_O
I haven't secured mine yet but either pins or tape will be my go to.
Just order one of these puppies -

Kandi bracelets are made up of beads that you string together yourself. Think of children's jewelry, specifically called pony beads, alphabet beads, and elastic string.

Alphabet Beads
Elastic String
This is what I was using, just black. Elastic string.

It needs to be a cable with a thick enough AWG to handle 30A and it needs to have the correct connectors on it. This is an example of what (I am assuming) is needed.
Everyone has been recommending these

Power Cable
Etymotic earplugs Have always worked for me. They are less than 20 dollars, and have lasted me since 2012 with no issue at all. They are very comfortable to wear, and can still hear easily. You will learn that they crank up the music as the night progresses, and is damn near deafening at peak time.
Last year they sold them in the vendor area, but go ahead and order some now.
I highly recommend you get these earplugs. These music earplugs lower the sound so it's not muffled like regular earplugs. Although they do make the music sound a little different.

It comes with a key chain pouch so you will never forget to bring it. Better start protecting your ears before it's too late.
When I go to the clubs with other people, they never say the music is loud but when I take out the earplugs, the music hurts my ears. The reason it doesn't hurt other peoples ears is because theirs are damaged where they aren't that sensitive anymore. They are really going to pay for it when they get older.
The movie "It's gone all Pete Tong" is about a dj who loses his hearing. pretty interesting.
I have these ones one of the biggest things i need with my earplugs is the string i got other ones that don't have the string and I lose them WAY to fast.

Dont buy foam ones they are useless and ruin the sound
