Vintage; Reprint edition (November 6, 2007)The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps
>Black Lizard has a great short story collection out there too.
That great big thick one? I need to buy a copy for rereading. I borrowed it twice from my local library and read it all of the way through twice, but that was a few years ago when it first came out. You can get used copies fairly cheap now, and I found most of those stories quite rereadable.
If you're looking for more stuff like Chandler, try: Dashiell Hammett, James Ellroy, James M. Cain, Cornell Woolrich, and the criminally overlooked David Goodis. If you haven't read Goodis, do. The Moon in the Gutter, Shoot the Piano Player, and Dark Passage are masterpieces.
Seriously, I can't recommend this collection enough. Goodis is a master of jazzy, lyrical prose.
I really do recommend you read the comics, You can pick up the omnibus on amazon for 60ish dollars right now.
