Well, certainly there is mass somehow, and all the other quantum properties (spin, charge, flavor, color) that may all be sourced from a single field.

I think /u/SnoopGGod is trying to create a theory for this single field. A good place to start - that is, to apply and build on it - for this would be Nielson and Chuang's Quantum Computation and Quantum Information...the math here, for what SGG's trying to do, is pretty ridiculous. They've implemented geometry into Hilbert space (quantum probability space; the universe lives in Fock space, which is basically just fields of Hilbert spaces) and applied the ideas of entropy to try and link it to a quantum gravity theory, satisfying Einstein's field equations. AdS/CFT correspondence.

This isn't actually fringe science, it's mainstream theoretical physics, but I figured you guys would appreciate knowing that some of this is being worked on by the frontrunners :)
