GET THEM ALL!!!! Just kidding ^^^^^but ^^^^^not ^^^^^really

If you are interested in the story I would recommend getting Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary first in order to get an idea of what Halo is about. It is basically the first Halo game, Halo: Combat Evolved, but remastered for the Xbox 360 on its 10 year anniversary. It has the entire first game's campaign and a multiplayer portion using the engine from Halo: Reach (we'll get to that in a moment).

If you are still interested in the story, go for Halo 2 next. It is for the original Xbox, but is also compatible with the 360 so you can play the campaign. It no longer has online multiplayer, though, so it is only good for local custom games and the campaign.

If you purchased Halo 2 you are probably interested enough in the Halo universe to continue the Master Chief's story. The next game will be Halo 3. Halo 3 is a great game and still has online multiplayer, though it is fairly sparse right now.

Note: Halo 3 will become available for free download on July 1st if you have Xbox Live Gold.

Halo 4 is the next game in line that follows the story of the Master Chief, however, there are two other games that were released between them.

Halo 3:ODST is one of these two games. It takes place during the events of Halo 2, but you play as a normal soldier rather than the Master Chief who is a Spartan. Spartans are basically supersoldiers. Normal humans who were augmented to be faster, stronger, and smarter than normal people. It is a fun game and comes with the Halo 3: ODST campaign and a second disc that contains all the multiplayer maps for Halo 3 which allows you to play Halo 3 online.

The other game is Reach. In Halo: Reach you play as a Spartan supersoldier, but not the Master Chief. This game takes places chronologically before the first Halo game, Halo: CE, but was released in 2010. It still has a decent multiplayer population, but I am not sure if is more than Halo 4.

The final game is Halo 4, the newest in the series. It follows the story of the Master Chief after Halo 3, and I believe it has the most populated multiplayer as of right now. Though, the numbers are still fairly low compared to other shooter games out there. This will be the game you will want if you are only interested in online play.

----

Too Long Didn't Read

If you are interested in campaign and storyline go for:

  • Halo: CEA

  • Halo 2

  • Halo 3

  • Halo 4

  • Halo 3: ODST ^*

  • Halo: Reach ^

    ^
Play these any time you want after Halo 3.

If you are only interested in playing online multiplayer go for:

  • Halo 4

  • Halo: Reach

  • Halo 3 (which will be free on July 1st!)

I would recommend Halo 4 over Reach, hopefully someone will be better informed on multiplayer populations than I am.

    ----

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! :D

The headset that comes with the console is good enough to communicate with people, but if you can afford to or you have some room on your Christmas gift list, even consider the Xbox One Stereo Headset. For their price, they are fantastic. Audio is nice and clear with a pretty decent frequency range and the voice chat is super easy to balance with the game volume. It also comes with the adapter that lets you plug any headphones into your controller and use them which is about $20 by itself anyway. So the one you get is fine to use and you will be able to chat fine, but if you talk a whole lot and want something cost effective but still very good, I would suggest having a bit more of a look into that headset :)

No problem! And thinking back, if you just want to show him more Chief, most of Halo 4 is safe to show. Though you may be wary of Cortana's physical appearance and the fact that she appears to be mostly nude.

The intro cutscene to Halo 4 is great and has some action, it even shows you that the Chief started off as a 6 year old kid, but at the same time it is kind of dark. Just be sure to DEFINITELY avoid the cutscene at 46:07: https://youtu.be/MlQeLoTUoZE

After combing through the Halo 4 cutscenes though, I am reminded of the mature storytelling so it might be a bit boring for a 5yo.

Halo 3 should be mostly safe, it's even kind of campy: https://youtu.be/8e1No_Oo8f8

You do have the Halo CE cutscenes too and they should be okay even with the Flood, but they're kind of dated. I'll link them anyway: https://youtu.be/32wp-gaRX8Q

Lastly, I was thinking over Halo Legends, and all of them should be okay minus "Homecoming" and "The Duel". PROTOTYPE is super action oriented but does have some blood and gore.

Also, what just crossed my mind is Halo: The Fall of Reach Animated Series, which is on Netflix. That should be okay for your son. It's a lot like Ender's Game if you've seen the movie/read the book.

Last but not least, a Scholastic Halo Guide was recently released called The Official Spartan Field Manual. It's meant for most ages, but I think your son would find the pictures and general feel of the book pretty cool. Here's an Amazon link to it: https://www.amazon.com/HALO-Official-Spartan-Field-Manual/dp/1338253638

It's the only game I own and have over 25 days of matchmaking. Yes you should it's $20 here on amazon brand new, you can't beat that. The arena maybe tough at first but you'll get it, just know it's competitive in ranked. I wouldn't recommend warzone, although I haven't played it since they nerfed the fireteams from 12 to 6. Warzone firefight is a fun casual experience you can play with your feet up. If you don't play the campaign you want miss much story wish but I had fun playing it. The custom games are great with friends, and action sac brings those custom games to matchmaking which is fun too.

Don't shoot the messenger, please - I don't represent codehpro, Microsoft, or anything else for that matter. The site claimed it was legal, so I wrote that.

It's up to everyone to gather knowledge and decide whether or not to pay for a physical, truly legitimate copy (merely $15 at Amazon) or visit Codehpro and pick it up within a legally grey area. Buying a physical copy doesn't mean it's going to work out of the box, either - patches and updates still require external and manual installation due to shaky support Microsoft provides for this game.

Either way, I'd love for a community to continue to support and help revive one of the best competitive and fun Halos out there.

ughhh this halo 2 online subject surfaces frequently. Heres the bottom line, a simple halo 2 pc amazon search will result in this, or you can buy this wherever youd like. Local gamestop problably wont have it but whatever. After you but this you install it on ure PC and you will be able to play ONLINE through whats called Windows Vista Games. This runs through the xbox live network. You WILL be able to play online against anyone just like you were playing it on your xbox years ago. You can setup a new gamertag or you can link it to your xbox live one if you already have. You can see your friends online and they will see u online(playing halo 2 PC) You DONT need an xbox live gold membership for online play. There are NO ranking systems or playlists, just custom games, usually only FFAs on lockout or midship. Its still fun though. As far as local mulitplayer(splitscreen) i havent tried it but im 90% sure it will work fine.

Some reviews are as you say, but that is just a subset and halo 4 recieved good reviews from EVERYONE, even on sites that the reviews are based on user scores. It also got great customer reviews. You've just been on this subreddit to long not to see that. The only people that don't like it are the people that don't have much interest in the campaign and only care about multiplayer.

You can just look at amazon and wiki to see how good the critic and customer reviews are. Might surprise you to get out of this subs hate circlejerk of the game for a change.

Multiplayer population does not show how good a game is. Shows how addictive the multiplayer is, that is all.

Luckily for you, there are quite a few resources full of info on the Halo Canon. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find here.

  • Halopedia is arguably the best resource for everything Halo, but you'll probably suffer SCP Syndrome and get dragged in for hours and forget what you were there for in the first place.

  • The Halo Story subreddit has a lot of Q&A type posts dating back for years, so whatever questions you may have are probably already answered. If for some reason your questions aren't there, just post them and the awesome community over there will help you out.

  • There are two massive "Halo Bibles" that have been published so far, with the older Halo Encyclopedia covering almost everything released up to Halo: Reach and the new Halo Mythos covering everything from the fall of the Precursors to the months leading up to Halo Wars 2. Mythos, in particular, has some beautiful artwork that could help you get an idea of the mood you'd want for your campaign.

As far as youtuber's go, there are two main ones that I'm aware of. I'm sure there are more, and if anybody would PM me or comment below, I'll add them to the list.

  • Halo Canon, who has videos on almost any topic imaginable.

  • Halo Follower, who focuses more on the "real world" side of Halo, but does have an awesome lore playlist

    ------

Edit: After some quick googling, I've discovered that there is a fan-made Halo RPG called Halo Mythic, which has its own subreddit at /r/HaloMythic/

This mic for Xbox One I bought recently and it's a great price: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Stereo-Headset/dp/B00IAVDQCK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1408815286&sr=8-2&keywords=xbox+one+stereo

I'm not really into talking in game chat but it's great for talking with friends and listening to game audio. Plus you can plug earbuds into the adapter too if you just want audio.

u/Accidentus · 2 pointsr/halo

I guess I didn't answer a lot of your questions, but the cheapest place to buy H4 is on Amazon. It's actually on sale for pretty cheap at the moment.

In terms of tips, learning the maps is the easiest way to get better. Site lines, common spots people are, callouts. Also, don't forget to use your nades. A lot of BF and CoD players don't use their grenades enough.

u/Goozoozoo · 1 pointr/halo

If your really serious about this, this book is really great. There is a table of contents so you can look up exactly what you want to know, or what you find interesting. But other than that, playing through the games (Halo CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, wars, and 4) would be the best way to build a connection to the characters as your boyfriend has.

u/1Potato1337 · 2 pointsr/halo

There only on amazon not that hard to find

https://www.amazon.com/Halo-2-PC/dp/B000NV8F58/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492625970&sr=8-1&keywords=halo%2B2%2BPC&th=1

Also if you are getting Halo 1 + 2 You have to get Custom edition for Halo CE and Project contingency for Halo 2 they really make the games multiplayer part. Also Halo CE requires an update from Bungie called update 1.10 its entirely free and easy to find by just searching "Halo CE PC update"

u/CyberKnight1 · 3 pointsr/halo

The Fall of Reach is probably the best to start. It's good for getting a background into the story as portrayed in the MCC (and it'll enhance what you've learned from the story playing Halo Reach).

u/Yera_ID10392947 · 4 pointsr/halo

Hey there :)

If you've got Halo Combat Evolved on PC, you can download Halo CE (that's custom edition) for free here. CE allows for more flexibility with regards to online play (custom maps, some of which have been modded) but lacks single player (although there are modded multilayer maps built for single-player use), which is made up by the Combat Evolved install.

Also remember to download the 1.0.10 patch before attempting to connect to the internet otherwise you won't be able to find any servers!

As for the Combat Evolved game, there are several ways to obtain a copy one of which is though Amazon. There are probably some other vendors selling it for cheaper but I don't know which would be best for you so I suggest you take a look yourself. Remember to keep a copy of your Combat Evolved product key as you will need it in order to instal CE.

There are, of course, other ways to obtain Combat Evolved, but I don't recommend it.

PM me if you need any more help :)

For that price, Microsoft's own stereo headset has pretty good reviews on sound quality and comfort. https://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Stereo-Headset-360/dp/B00IAVDQCK

u/stamminator · 3 pointsr/halo

I'd recommend buying it new here instead of risking Ebay or other vendors. Only $20.

After you get the CD, make a backup of your disc as an ISO file, as well as as backup of your CD key. Run updates, and you're ready to play campaign mode.

You should get Custom Edition as well. Follow the instructions on the site to make sure you have the latest version, then go nuts.

Halo: The Thursday War is the next book in the Halo: Ghost of Onyx storyline. It follows Halo: Glasslands.

They are good reads and are supposedly going to be closer to the story of Halo 4 than the rest of the books were (other than Halo: The Flood which was just a play by play novel of the story of Halo: CE.)

u/Decyde · 2 pointsr/halo

Good deal but http://www.amazon.com/RISK-RI006-289-Halo-Legendary/dp/B007AJOP8C is $8 more with free shipping. I'm not sure if OP has factored in the final price with taxes but those without a Best Buy in a decent driving distance can order that off Amazon.

Also, there are reviews if you want to read what other people think of it. 4 1/2 stars!

u/ChironXII · 2 pointsr/halo

Here is a list with links to Amazon if you don't have the books yet.

In chronological order I'm fairly sure it's:

>It's price has dropped considerably on the second hand market as well. It's less than £20 on Amazon brand new which again, isn't a good sign.

It's set on Amazon for 59.90$, currently 39.90$ on Sale. That's almost double then what you said. Additionally the game isn't at all cheaper on second-hand markets, it's more then 40 euros on both g2a & Kinguin.

u/Cold_August · 2 pointsr/halo

If I were just playing ODST by myself I wouldn't spend more than $30 on it but it is well worth it for anything less than that. Since Amazon has it for less than $20 I'd say buy it!

u/CyReN_ · 5 pointsr/halo

Why not have both? You can get Halo Reach for $16 bucks now and it's $60 at launch. If you can't afford over $75 total (don't know your tax rate) then skip a fast meal out or extra's to get both. Halo 4 is under 3 months away, personally I'd just buy them both or at worse play Halo 3 or the Halo Reach demo until H4.

My gut feeling is Halo 4 will be better than Halo Reach.

Most of the lore you need for the first trilogy, ODST, and Reach is presented in game.

To learn more about the extended universe check out r/Halostory and also https://www.halopedia.org/.

Additionally, I would recommend reading the Fall of Reach to understand where the Halo Spartans came from, and the setup to the first Halo game. To understand the rest of the lore in the universe in a much larger overall scope. I would dive into the Forerunner trilogy of books by Greg Bear. The first one is called Cryptum.

Don't know how to embed URLs, sorry.

It comes in bright red and blue, like the BoomCo skins in Guardians. I did the paint job myself with matte black and gray spray paint.

Unfortunately the darts aren't fired through the barrel, there's an opening between the barrel and the flashlight/handguard. So it might be a bit wonky to install, unless you cut out the AR's barrel and slot in the M4 there.

Where did you get $460 from?

You can go on Amazon right now and get a 500gig BF1 XB1 bundle for $250, and Halo 5 is $18.

Wrong, the Precursors aren't Flood, the one they found was a Gravemind whom they thought was a Precursor, but most likely had a Precursor absorbed into them. The latest books reveal that the Flood was created 10 million years before the Forerunners and the Precursors are older then that.
