It's really quite easy.
That looks like a good unit at a very fair price, as your original budget was $300, $180 gives you some room for upgrades or whatever.
Things I like:
Bad:
Documentation:
The cable you linked is a SFF-8087-SFF-8087, but I thought the R710 backplane was SFF-8484? I would need something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Internal-mini-SAS-S510-18N/dp/B00193MCN0
Either way, I don't think it really matters. The only drives in the R710s will be two 146GB 10k RPM drives in RAID 1 as the boot device, which can be done through the PERC6/i that they ship with. The H200 will just interface with the DAS externally (Might as well just get the H200E, which is $10 more instead of futzing with adapters.) This also means I don't have to worry about the storage PCIe slot compatibility.
I was looking around and someone posted this cable along with this adapter and looking at the questions one was a nortel engineer that recommended it and said it works with their products. Ill give it a go when it all arrives. What program did you use to connect to the switch via console? Telnet? Screen? Putty? Thanks for the info about the gateway i wouldnt have known. Looks like im going to have to do a good amount of research when setting it up since i dont know much.
From my search finding 30” depth racks that are smaller is kinda difficult. You may also want room to expand. I know this rack is pretty popular and I’ve seen some sales on this one: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Adjustable-Levelers-Management-4POSTRACK12U/dp/B00P1RJ9LS/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=startech+12u&qid=1555357650&s=gateway&sr=8-3
Thanks, I've been eyeing this rack, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P1RJ9LS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
I've been waiting for a deal to come up on the used market for a nice closed rack or cheaper open rack before purchasing a rack new.
I got this cable and this adapter. I had to install the adapter driver on the disk to get the thing to work. Then find the com port in the device manager. Once I did that I was able to get a serial connection establish.
I then fumbled my way through the CLI, set up a default gateway and when I was able to get to the Web GUI. Also the default gateway cannot be the same as your router. I tried because I didn't know better and it didn't work.
I don't know a lot, but with a good bit of google I was able to get it working.
I rock some of these for my 3's: https://www.amazon.com/LoveRPi-Power-Over-Ethernet-PoE-Raspberry-Model/dp/B07KF6ZFMT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=pi+hat&qid=1572991601&sr=8-3
They also make em for 4's: https://www.amazon.com/LoveRPi-Power-Over-Ethernet-PoE-Raspberry-Model/dp/B07WD7HXSQ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=pi+hat&qid=1572991652&sr=8-4
If you've got Prime, easy enough to chuck in with your next order.
These should work for 2.5" drives (at least according to the info)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0038KU1YO/

These are good for 3.5" drives
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00353EKR8/
You might be thinking of the DS218j which is currently going for $170 on Amazon. The DS218+ is $300
They are free-standing. I believe it's these two:

https://amazon.com/gp/product/B000FBK3QK/
i ordered 2x of these

Potential alternative - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9CXGSO
here ya go
Nope they need to be bough separately. $15.49 @ Amazon
SFF-8088 cables aren't that expensive.
$15 on amazon
Look into shucking a seagate 2.5" drive. You should be able to get 4tb new for your 100 bucks.
Drive here: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Portable-External-Storage-STDR4000100/dp/B00ZTRXFBA/ref=as_li_bk_tl/?tag=servecom-20&linkId=44d43abb0c2382a66295517dfbde2add&linkCode=ktl
more info: https://www.servethehome.com/seagate-4tb-2-5-sata-hdd-124-get-ready-density/
The Seagate I looked up was shuckable, I actually almost bought it for my PS4, but went with a cheaper 2Tb version instead.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZTRXFBA/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

I've also got a PERC H700 which is 4Tb ( and up to 6tb from what I'm reading) compatible.
Yeah, they're both hardware stores. Is there anything special about the screws you need or are they just standard HDD screws? If just standard HDD screws, you can get them on Amazon
White Label 2 Terabyte (2TB) 16MB Cache 7200RPM SATA2 3.5" Internal Desktop Hard Drive (For PC, Mac, CCTV DVR, NAS) - w/ 1 Year Warranty https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00370A8EI/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awd_OsAGwbMB1HH0D
Search for this part number from Supermicro: MCP-410-00005-0N They should be the same screws needed for dell caddies, assuming dell uses the same 6-32 flat head everyone else uses.
It looks like the new version of that case is ~$250 new (https://smile.amazon.com/Rosewill-Rackmount-Computer-Pre-Installed-RSV-L4412/dp/B00N9CXGSO?ref_=bl_dp_s_mw_2530329011) as a reference point.
I've actually been looking at the case (or a variant from Rosewill) to build out my Unraid box so definitely not junk only mind.
Unfortunately no idea for the motherboard and other items.
No it's this Tripp Lite 12U Wall Mount Rack Enclosure Server Cabinet, Hinged, 20.5" Deep, Switch-... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TGUYI2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_DrhhAb1VR434Z
If no one has them to sell... Amazon does. I just ordered twelve a few weeks back.
Lol, the boxes are opened and you can get a brand new in box unit for $150. Man alive everything thinks their shit is worth gold. It doesn't matter what you paid for it, only what others will pay for it. Nobody will pay that price for a NEW SEALED one even
I just have to comment because I am absolutely BAFFLED by sellers like you. You're asking for more than any retail place charges for a brand new product but you're trying to sell opened used product, you're nuts.

no. the cable I linked to is correct if you are using an H200 internally to the backplane in an r710. That cable you linked too is the connector on the old PERC 6i. I would honestly get rid of that card. It's no good. The backplane of the r710 and the H200 use the same connectors.
So wait now you are getting a DAS? I thought you were getting another server with its own processors and everything? In that case there is no reason to connect it with an R710. You only need to do that with jbod devices that are headless.
The h200 is used internally. The H200E is used externally and uses a different connector. That is the card you would use if connecting to a jbod device. https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-External-26pin-SFF-8088-Cable/dp/B013G4F3A8/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1499059230&sr=1-2&keywords=sas+external
You told me you were going to go with a supermicro chassis with 12 bays that has it's own processors and everything. That is a standalone server and has no use being connected to a r710. You are still going to need a HBA for it though which would need to be internal.
You get what I'm saying?
