I have a crossrope and it's a great rope but let me just say, even the 1lb rope is fucking hard work. I don't regret it at all but I'm a long way from even bothering to take the 2lb rope out of the box. My advice would be to take baby steps if you've just been using a standard ~ 0.25lb rope so far. Get the GoFit 1lb try it out and if you like it and want a higher quality version then spring for the crossrope. Crossrope is good but yeah that price tag, I wish they did a 0.5 lb / 1lb combo instead.

Here's the amazon page for the 1.5lb GoFit w/ some reviews btw: https://www.amazon.com/GoFit-Harper-Training-Handles-1-5-Pound/dp/B0064OOSNQ/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=gofit+jump+rope&qid=1563898197&s=gateway&sr=8-6

I suggest something lighter before going straight to 1lb. There's a HUGE difference between a speed rope that may weigh ~3oz and 16oz. However, if you want a ~1lb rope, Rush Athletics makes a rope that weighs .9lb found Here on Amazon. The other option is CrossRope which is a really great system, and costs more. However, it offers a LOT of flexibility.

Get a jump rope mat.

Yoga mats are not designed to handle the impact from jump rope. It won’t offer much protection from the concrete.

If you are lucky enough to be near a public playground, they sometimes have a vinyl flooring outside. That surface is very good for jumping rope. The other surface that is good is the hardwood floor use for indoor basketball courts.

Be ready to condition the leather and maybe use a 600 grit sandpaper on your handles, it's in a high gloss finish and tit gets hard to hold when the sweat flows.

Agreed on rope choice. You have to develop great feel for speed ropes and they are not a great beginner option.
Crossrope is my favorite and has the ability to push you a lot more do to the interchangeable weighted ropes.

Here is a good affordable option that would also be great for getting you started.

Both of these can be used on most surfaces. I have been jumping rope for over 10 yrs and have to disagree with the idea that jump roping on concrete is bad. If your wearing shoes and not doing a bunch of doubles and triples your fine. If doing it properly, you just don't jump high enough to do damage. People jogging on roads are at far more risk imo. That being said, a mat is never a bad idea.
Concrete does wear down ropes faster so I always choose the smoothest surface possible.

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve had $10-$15 ropes last for more than a year. I went and bought this rope based on the reviews.

I bought this one and really like it for the price. Been using it for a while and has held up well. I like that it has a decent weight to it. The process of sizing it correctly concerned me at first but it has turned out to be fine.

I got these Mpow Flames for that same reason, I needed headphones for jumproping. They stay in great, I've never had any problems with them (they come with multiple different bud sizes, so if they don't fit well you can switch sizes)

i've owned 4-5 ropes in the price range that didn't work out. If you can dig a little deeper, I highly recommend this set. https://www.amazon.com/Crossrope-Jump-Rope-Get-Lean/dp/B07CR5DMQG

If you need to stay 30 or under, this one is nice too but it is very industrial and may leave you with a few lashes. https://www.amazon.com/WOD-Nation-Speed-Jump-Rope/dp/B00ZWDJ7PO

I bought this rope on Amazon about 3 weeks ago and I love it. I have no complaints for under $20. Also, it's a damn workout for sure.

Try using calf sleeves. I got mine 2 weeks ago and it dramatically reduced my sheen splints and allowed me to jump for a longer time and more frequent. this is the ones I got: https://www.amazon.com/Advantage-Knitted-Sleeve-Black-Anthracite/dp/B071GT56X9/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1522792056&sr=8-7&keywords=nike+calf+sleeve
