I'm 26 and 200 (with around 30 pounds of tackle, anchor, fishfinder, battery, etc. on board as well) with what I'd like to think is a pretty good sense of balance. I added a stand assist strap, and I can stand up in calm water to stretch and do some spotting, but anything more than that gets pretty darn sketchy.

I have yet to take mine into saltwater, but I absolutely don't see why not. It's actually 12'6", and I feel that the effective beam is much closer to 28" instead of the advertised 30". All things considered, it's a pretty quick boat for its class.

This is my mounting setup for my Garmin 5DV. I got a smokin' deal on it, which came in handy because RAM mounts are surprisingly expensive. Worth every penny so far though. I think the lighter-duty (and slightly shorter, which was the killer for me) RAM mount for a 4DV or other, vertical-screen fishfinder is close to half the price of the one I got though. All in all, a pretty easy install, just be wary of hidden costs such as transducer arm, battery, mounts, jerry-rigging hardware, etc. I suppose the good news is that I could move this setup to damn near any kayak (or even real boat) I want in the future with very minimal fuss.

Definitely cartoppable with the help of some load assist devices. Grab one of these and consider using a set of saddles that have rollers. I'm personally using a pair of Yakima Mako Saddles and a pair of Yakima Hully Rollers on my 2015 Subaru Impreza hatchback. If you're planning on using those sketchy foam blocks.... well..... good luck?

One important point to consider is that the stock seat is total dogshit. I bought one of these and added a 1.5" ass-pad underneath it and I gained worlds of comfort while still retaining a relatively low, efficient paddling position. I'm of the opinion that all of the fancy lawn chair setups found in higher-end kayaks, while supremely comfortable, aren't high enough to really provide much of a vision advantage while at the same time add a serious detriment to your paddling efficiency. To be fair, when I learned to kayak as a kid, it was through whitewater, so my ideas surrounding paddling are probably somewhat biased.

I seed and sawed on getting this model boat, among others, for months while I worked up funds for it, and then suddenly my friend offered to sell me his, barely used and with a fiberglass shaft paddle of correct length, for $250, leaving me plenty of funds to modify it to my liking.

I own a couple Perception Sound 10.5's which are the same thing but without the extra fishing gear that Dick's slaps on to sell them as the Hook 10.5.

  1. Agreed, these boats go through waves and rapids instead of over, and while the website says class 1 and 2 capable, you're gonna get wet and I wouldn't push it either, try to avoid.
    1. They're fun, but one should be careful, and avoid bigger ones. Also strap your stuff down if you're gonna take gear, no sense in losing it. Is fun to punch through waves and get wet on a hot summer day for sure.
    2. If I was going to keep using my Sound 10.5, I was going to invest in a bilge pump. I have since purchased and started using different kayaks, but still have the Sounds in storage. Debating if I'll keep em or not. Damn good little stable sit-in fishing kayaks, utility focused, fun floaters, decent seat, price was right, they got me back into the water sport and most of all, fishing again.
  2. I keep em in my net which is that clear plastic/rubber style webbing, I have a couple sets of pliers on hand. Most of the time I would do okay. Bigger fish I would sometimes do over the side, for sit-in kayaks the Sound/Hook 10.5 are pretty stable, but can feel pretty tippy of course. I was still cautious, this was never an easy thing with larger and feistier fish and this kayak, some may have more or less trouble with it. My new kayak is much more open and wider for dealing with these situations. It has been fun getting pulled around by large trout and pike.
    1. Pinch your barbs too! Might lose a few because of it...but if you hook yourself its at least less painful and messy of an extraction on the water. You may not have much time to deal with it when it happens.
    2. Maybe a hawg trough would be helpful if you can keep them held down to it. I don't have one (yet), so not sure if that's a good idea or not.
  3. Install some hoops or kleets to clip/tie off to, tie to small carabiners or clip at the end of your stringer to clip onto the hoop. Problem solved. I mostly catch and release unless I'm out camping so not often I run into this. Generally if I'm thinking of keeping anything I'll bring a soft cooler with ice in that I strap down in the back. One issue with this kayak is limited access turning around. I really appreciate my new kayak more for being able to turn around and reach back.

  4. My wife lost an expensive rod/reel combo to the small branch of a tree that grabbed it out of that rear rod holder as we floated under it. Didn't even hear it go...was totally ridiculous. I've dealt with some lake chop and had my rod/reel combos not been clipped down, I would've lost em. I almost flipped...but kept upright, pulled the straps to recover my sank rod/reels, cleaned em at home, good to go. The 1-carabiner + 3 straps solution is like $12 on Amazon. A small price to pay for keeping gear. I always strap my paddle to. I don't want to have to chase my gear if I flip, especially on a river. Even if it never happens, it's not that big of a deal to me to be prepared but early on it was kind of annoying to adjust to. Not losing another rod/reel combo though? Priceless. :)
    1. On the Sound 10.5, I used the 0-ring on the end of the seat back adjuster strap on the right side behind the seat support sidewall. Worked great, I was able to leash my paddle and two rods. I used some extra bungees for my milk crate that would clip onto the larger holes in those same supports on both sides of the seat.

You may not be able to use this exact make and model, but this loading technique is effective. And really, you can duplicate it on whatever rack you have by removing the crossbar's end cap and using a piece of rebar steel (assuming you use a rack with exposed crossbar ends). This would be the cheapest option.

If you don't have exposed crossbar ends, then another thing you can do to load a kayak onto a normal car like yours, is to use a kayak cart as a "roller" by turning it upside down and placing it on the trunk or back windsheld of your car (depending on the shape of your cart and contours of your particular car). Video demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wnzk1VOJa0

If you're not able to do that for some reason, or don't need to own a kayak cart, they sell something that accomplishes the same thing:

https://www.amazon.com/Seattle-Sports-Sherpak-Boat-Roller/dp/B009PAAI5I/ref=pd_bxgy_468_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009PAAI5I&pd_rd_r=XZY5YQA7AXZTVQKZH3VE&pd_rd_w=zCMiP&pd_rd_wg=k1tUj&psc=1&refRID=XZY5YQA7AXZTVQKZH3VE

Hope that helps.

Small ponds than you won't want an full size big boy with all the bells and whistles. New go to your local retailers small and big box stores. Look at the decks see layout of decks the features you love, hate or what ever. Sit in them see the comfort level. Used: Check local used sites (letgo Craiglist etc...) see what is offered. Read reviews ask for extra pics. Gather information and if you decide to go the used route make sure you walk away happy. Just remembered you can add mods to make it yours. Used you don't have to worry about void warranty. I have a 10 pelican yak for pond jumping in the Laplace spill way. Great for it because I have to carry it some distance in ruff bushes and terrain. But I had to add a hot seat pad for comfort.

Mine is a few years old so it didn't come with comportment (I did add one) or the adjustable foot rest.

With just one kayak you can get away with some foam pads and straps. You don't necessarily need the foam pads, but they'll help you cinch the kayaks down properly to the car. You should be able to grab the edge of the kayak and rock the whole car if cinched down good.

Something like either of these:

If you are going to be transporting two kayaks, then you'll want a kayak rack system of some sort to do without as much hassle.

This company makes some good affordable products:

Does that model not have a skid plate? If not can you add one? With that it should be safe to just drag it along the dirt/sand. I have a Predator MX that is 90lbs and that's the best method I've found when I can't use my cart. I've got one spot I launch from where there's about 30feet of parking lot I have to carry it across or use my cart to get across, and then I can just drag it down the 80' or so of bank.

If that's not an option, you probably build a PVC "sled" for your boat which will help hold it sideways and slide along the ground without contacting it. It'd take some work and a few wasted PVC joints, but rigging up something yourself might be the best and cheapest option.

I have one of these, which is a cheap piece of junk but works alright. I don't think it would work well for you due to getting knocked off the boat in that narrow pathway though.

u/Nadieestaaqui · 3 pointsr/kayakfishing

Depending on your lights, something like this is probably sufficient. Pair that up with one of these and you should be able to run it all night on a single charge (math says up to 16 hours, but I'd stick to 12 to avoid over-taxing the battery).

Stick the battery in a good waterproof box, like /u/NoLA_Owl mentioned. Run a car lighter through the box into the battery (with a fuse - you'll be surrounded by water and shorts are bad). Maybe wire in a switch, if you're so inclined. Apply liberal amounts of Marine Goop/silicone where any wires enter the box and you're good to go.

Tie off the box to your kayak, or to a good long line with a bit of pool noodle at the end. If that box falls overboard for any reason, it's going to sink right to the bottom (the battery is basically a lead brick). The line will let you find it and pull it back up.

Engel makes some nice coolers with rod holders attached. I switched to that from a crate a while ago, totally worth it. 30qt fits my yak well. https://www.engelcoolers.com/cooler-dry-boxes.html Fits tackle boxes, but can also be used for food/fish storage. You can probably find them for cheaper if you shop around.

Definitely upgrade the sonar. https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Striker-Bbuilt-Fish-Finder/dp/B017NI17HQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=marine&ie=UTF8&qid=1521764204&sr=1-1&refinements=p_4%3AGarmin This is what I use. Affordable and accurate.

An anchor system, too. Perhaps a trolley setup for your yak. I installed one just in case, and I use it all the time. Sooooo nice to be able to post up on a good spot no matter the wind or current conditions. No fussing around, paddling after every 3 casts to stay on location.

Nice boat!

u/ME4Twaffle · 1 pointr/kayakfishing

I'm officially picking up my yak tomorrow and I'm pretty pumped about it. I'm not bringing my fishing gear the first few times I go out. As the top comment on your post states I'll only be bringing my PFD, paddle, leash and my watertight box to protect my keys and belongings while I'm out there.

I bought this PFD and wasn't aware that it actually comes with a whistle in the front pocket. Didn't realize that's what that orange thing is in the picture. The description doesn't even mention it.

As for leashes, I bought this pack of 1 paddle + two pole leashes, though I got super lucky and got an Amazon Warehouse Deal that cut the price in half. Another highly-rated option would be this set, which are a lot cheaper without taking advantage of used or sale products.

This is the watertight box I'm bringing. Only $10 at Walmart. They carry the same one at Dick's for $15.

u/insomniacpyro · 3 pointsr/kayakfishing

Leashes! These work great for me. Have yet to lose a rod or a paddle. The paddle one can be looped simply enough and attached with cheap caribiners. The rod ones are similar but I used a key ring and two zip ties on the butt of the rod, hasn't moved in two years and still removable if I need it to be.
Everyone else has been sharing some great advice, I followed the same advice when I started.

Scotty #141 Kayak/SUP Transducer Mounting Arm with Gear-Head https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0174X6T5A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ngfCzbV070GVM

I use this and it works great. I had to get my own wing nut and bolt to attach the transducer but it's nice that it can be pulled up and folded up out of the way. It does create some drag but it keeps the finder working while moving. I mounted two tracks so i can switch sides if i wish.

Toss my Vibe on top of my Wrangler Sport as well. Not always the easiest thing to load solo.

I bought these guys to make it a little easier on my top:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BCLL52I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's worked out pretty well so far.

u/OmarDClown · 1 pointr/kayakfishing

I am hoping to buy my first kayak tomorrow as I check into a used one, so don't take this as expert advice.

This [one[(http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=31230526&cp=4406646.4413887.4413986.4417717.4417969) at Dick's is the same kayak with two rod holders. A comparable car carrier kit from amazon costs $25. The BJ's version comes with a paddle, while you can get a cheap paddle for $30.

So, I'm thinking, for about $50, is it worth it to install a rod holder or two? You could actually do the foam car carrier yourself by going to a fabric store, where they will sell foam. I suspect a couple of pieces of foam like that would just cost a few dollars. They might even have it as scrap for nothing (if you're especially lucky or handsome).

u/moonsteethmarks · 2 pointsr/kayakfishing

Hey fellow mazda owner (protege here). If you want a nice option go with a good roof rack, but if you want a cheap/decent option go with this guy:

If I had the money I'd get something nicer, but this does the job

u/planza · 2 pointsr/kayakfishing

I bought an Astral V-Eight pdf and am happy with it. It is ventilated, so it doesn't get as hot as other models. This is important because I live in south Louisiana and it gets really hot and humid down here in the summers. It has a couple of small pockets and a strobe attachment point.

You can check it out at the link below:

u/scootstah · 5 pointsr/kayakfishing

A kit like this is good: https://www.amazon.com/Yak-Gear-Deluxe-Anchor-Trolley/dp/B0097N2HNY

You can also piece them together yourself if you want. They're pretty easy to install, just follow the instructions and put in a couple screws.

u/benuntu · 1 pointr/kayakfishing

This rack doesn't require it, as it has a rubber strip that runs along the top. But they do make some thick foam pads if you're concerned about it. I bought these for my trailer and they work well:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BCLL52I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can place them on top of the car, or fit around an "aero" style rack.

It's the sea to summit soft roof rack in size large. I can't say enough good things about it. It attaches in less that 3 minutes and I can have my kayak on and strapped down in less than 10. It can also then be strapped down to anyone elses car in the same amout of time so if a buddy wants to take their car we can put both kayaks on top and be out the door in the same amout of time.

Edit: Forgot to say that the ratching straps do not come with it so you will have to pick those up some where else.

TLDR: Awesome rack here is a link.

$35 for the best accessory that I have put into my yak. It would cost more to make a DIY one that was decent. If you make a DIY one and fish in salt water it most likely will not last very long unless you buy all nylon and stainless steel parts.

I use a boat roller like this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PAAI5I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , Seattle Sports Sherpak Boat Roller) to help me load my kayak onto my cartop racks from the rear of the vehicle.

Harbor freight one sucks. I use this.
http://www.amazon.com/TMS-T-NS-HITCH-BED-EXTENDER-Pickup-Mounted-Extender/dp/B005KVLX50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406771784&sr=8-1&keywords=pickup+truck+bed+extender
You can find it with free shipping. Better ground clearance than the harbor freight version and way more adjust ability. You can use it with SUV's or ladder racks too. Maybe not as much clearance as the T-bone but I haven't hit the ground with it. It's solid too. It will rust through when my Hitch rusts through.

u/IDontWantToArgueOK · 2 pointsr/kayakfishing

I would definitely consider used, there isn't a whole lot that can go wrong with these boats so 99% of the used ones will be perfectly seaworthy. I'd also definitely recommend a sit on top for stability while fishing, the Cobra brand kayaks seem to be much more stable than other brands due to their width and hull design. I bought my Cobra Fish n Dive on Craigslist for $350.

Roof racks can be pricey, my car is smaller than yours and I've been getting by fine using a foam block kit off amazon without a rack, however that can wear paint or damage door seals over time.

I wouldn't get a roof rack that requires modification to the roof of your car. That potentially could cause more damage than just strapping it to your roof.

Hello,

I had a blazer. Frist thing I did was put Thule cross bars on the factory bar. There was way too much play in the factory cross bars...so I ditched them.

Second. Look into a ladder rack. like this one. With that you can slide the boats back a bit and still have solid connection to the truck.

u/jhulbe · 1 pointr/kayakfishing

I just bought these the other day. because my kayak is too wide to also carry my wifes on top of the car. Here's is a pelican boost? 100. It's the 10ft sit on top at dicks.

http://www.amazon.com/TMS-J-Bar-Carrier-Mounted-Crossbar/dp/B003V57NUQ

Here's a video just after I installed it on my yakima bars. I wobble the back and it moves a lot but I just had a loose ratchet strap in the video. It holds it down just fine on my 45min drive on I-80 in New Jersey going 60-75mph

Shaking it shakes the whole car quit a bit. It's solid, and they're $30.

Only Downside is they don't collapse, so I either leave them on and they point straight up, or I take my whole rack off, because the little quick release wing nut things don't get it tight enough. I actually tightened them on with a wrench. So they're not quick to take off.

The most inexpensive method would be to buy an attwood car rack set - foam holders, cam straps, and ropes. You can wrap the cam straps around the kayak and through your car windows- essentially holding the kayak to the upper part of the car. ALWAYS tie down at least either the stern or bow of the kayak to the back/front or the car- ideally both.

12v "deer feeder" (sealed lead acid) battery like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003S1RQ2S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469028923&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=12v+sealed+battery&dpPl=1&dpID=41UZQatOF%2BL&ref=plSrch

It's what I, and I believe most people, use, often in some kind of waterproof case. The 7Ah has never been drained by my fishfinder, however I'm not sure how long it will power lights. you'll have to do some calculations of the amp draw of the lights too see how big a battery (how many Ah, amp hours) you'll need.

Going on five years now with no problems. Granted my kayak (Swifty 9.5 by Perception) is made out of hard plastic, I load my yak with the underside up and also I cinch it down till there's no movement. I'd reconsider if I had a fiberglass kayak. You can also get these I believe they can be attached to the bars I mentioned above. Would be great if you have two yaks to move.

This one or the yakattack paddle/rod holder. It’s longer so it doesn’t get in the way, of that’s what you mean. The shorter ones made my casting feel awkward.

Thats the one i have, i have no complaints at all, i have transducer mounted inside of my kayak in a bit of duct seal (electrical putty). Temp reading is off by maybe a degree or so. Other than that it does everything i need it to do and then some. Plus it didnt break the bank. :)

I think you were trying to link to this one:

And you cut too much of the link off.

Stupid bot.

This is what I use:

RADD Sportz Kayak Hoist Quality Garage Storage Canoe Lift with 125 lb Capacity Even Works as Ladder Lift Premium Quality https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EUL2DO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F4KCzb3RH003A

On mobile so not sure how the link will do. You're right, it isn't right on the ceiling. I have higher ceilings in my garage.

My kayak is currently down and loaded for the weekend but I'll try to remember to get a picture Sunday evening.
